From Rommel's journal:
25th of Last Seed, 401
The past few days I have traveled a good deal between Whiterun, Windhelm and Riverside. I've even made a trip, against my will, out to Dawnstar.
I've had several harrowing escapes from Death and each taught me a vital lesson that I'm sure not to forget.
First, as Faen and I snuck up to the Valtheim Towers, I tried to snipe a bandit patrolling the bridge. My shot went over their head, alerting them to our presence, and soon the entire gang was rushing across the bridge, out the door and coming for us. (actually, ive been having a lot of trouble with archery on this character. In the past, my arrows hit right about where I aimed my crosshair, but now they go way too high... anybody know what might cause that? or a way to adjust? on pc.)
We dropped two before they closed with us but that left 4 or 5, all of which rushed Faen.
I popped off a couple more arrows and 2 bandits peeled off for me. One was the target of
our mission, the leader of
these scum, and I nearly soiled myself when I saw her closing with me brandishing a massive 2handed sword. I ran back up the road, turning periodically to fire.
Thanks to a pair of skeevers taking down her follower, the odds were now even so I stopped, switched to my blades and went toe to toe with her. It was a close contest but she went down just as Faen came trotting back, having finished off the rest of the bandits. I was relieved to see him as I was certain he'd be hacked to pieces and more bandits would be on me any second.
Lessons: Don't rely on my bow. I'm no marksman.
Don't like the odds? Run.
As we were now about half way to Windhelm, we decided to pop in for a visit.
On the way some slimebag khajit tried to sell me skooma. I cut him down and took his entire stash instead. Never touch the junk myself but it should yield a nice bit o'coin.
Spoiler
In Windhelm I heard some kid was trying to contact the dark brotherhood, without success.
I paid him visit, acting the part of an assassin, figuring I could collect the requisite fee without actually doing the deed.
But when I heard his tale I decided to pay his mark a visit afterall.
In his room I noticed an intact human heart as part of his ritual.
I've heard they possess magic properties useful in alchemy and know of a few smithing patterns that utilize them as well.
I grabbed it. Bringing my count up to two as I'd found one on a dead necromancer on the way here.
The kid's target was in Riverside, which is a pretty long hike, so I hired a carriage to take us there.
It was a good trip. I killed the evil wretch for the boy and felt pretty good about it.
I also managed to gain acceptance in the thieves guild. I've done a few profitable jobs for them and best of all, I now have access to a fence for all my stolen goods!
Since it's almost on the way to Whiterun, I figured Id pay the old geesers at High Hrothgar a visit.
On the road west we passed beneath a run down old fortress. As we carelessly strolled by on the road many shouts arose from within and soon hounds and brigands beyond count were streaming out the gate.
We fought as we ran and, once again, survived by the skin of our teeth.
Lesson: Never let your guard down. Assume every structure is housing something or someone hostile and proceed with caution.
We arrived at a small village at the foot of Hrothgar. We decided to get a night's sleep before ascending the snowy mountain and put up at the local inn.
Spoiler
I woke in a strange room, groggy and vision blurred. Drugged.
Sitting atop a shelf was a small lady in leather that claimed I had wronged her organization when I'd killed that wretch in Riverside.
Said I'd stolen their contract so now I owed them.
I'm loathe to recount the details but suffice to say I repaid them with interest.
She was happy and invited me to join her "family".
I neither accepted nor declined but bid her farewell and went home to Whiterun.
The old men will have to wait a little longer. I'm tired and the work I did for the thieves guild has earned me enough to buy that little house for sale next to the smith...
On the way home a dragon descended on us. Fool beast also attacked a giant, some mammoths and wolves.
It died but the giant, apparently worked up into a rage, came at us.
I took a few pot shots at it from atop a high rock. However, as it closed the distance between us I noticed that compared to a giant, my rock was not so high afterall. I called to Faen and we ran. And ran. And downed a stamina potion and ran some more.
Lessons: If a dragon, a giant and some mammoths are fighting, be on your way.
And, they don't call them "giants" for nothing. They're big.
And, no, that rock isn't high enough.
