One of the great features of Skyrim (also perhaps a to it's detriment) is that leveling and skilling up is totally irrelevant in Skyrim. It happens as a result of playing the game, but shouldn't be sought unless you just want to level. If so, then by all means max 3 skills, start a new char' and do it again.

Unfortunately, if you aren't enjoying Skyrim then you should probably move on and play something else. I am on the verge of selling my copy since I 'get' what this game is all about. Once you hit that point in a game it is logically difficult to continue playing.

I suggest doing a play through as a pure mage, warrior, and thief. If that doesn't appeal to you then it's probably time to eBay your copy.

lvl another skill, start a new character. There will be mods that increase the lvl ceiling to 255 after the CK :D

There is a mod call Elys uncapper. What it can do allow you to set skill limit beyond 100 and/or change the experience needed for each skill. Damage for weapons and magic cost reduction benefits from skills continues to grow pass 100.

What it means is that you can just increase the skill level limit to 200 and you will be able to grow stronger in your chosen profession.

Happy playing.

Sounds like the issue are the words "Level Cap"

The only true Level Cap is only reachable by doing "Every Skill"

If you choose to do only one skill or "style" then you greatly reduce your Level Cap. This is not the game's fault or issue, it is the way you choose to play it.

No you do not have less powerful spells...Eveything in "Your world" has stopped leveling too.

You may continue playing the way you wish, and fighting in the style you want, but the only thing left is to experience the game. Unless you change your mind and use other skills.

Now if they took your idea and gave you XP for "Killing the way you want or completing quests" then everything else would level above your perks and Yes you would be underpowered. Levels mean nothing without places to put the perks in the skills you use.

I do agree wit the OP to a certain extent, that it stirs you away from playing a single class character style of game play, but in saying that it does make the high level game play a little more challenging as you need to come out of your comfort zone to keep leveling up. I do wish there was more quests or hoping for a massive dlc like the Shivering Isle, because I just about cleared every dungeon without finishing the main quest line at around level 60 and find it quite boring clearing out same dungeons just to level up. You do just about own the game when you are around level 50, so after that it just leveling up for the sake up leveling up.

You're thinking that "level" is meaning what you want it to mean instead of meaning what it means. In this game, there's no "end boss" that you have to be a certain level to try or you'll lose. There's no area which needs you to be level 50 to enter. Your character level doesn't define your character. You can play the game without leveling much at all... it's not needed. If that bothers you, you need to play a different game because it's not going to change.

This statement is spot on and why I have always (secretly so as not to branded a heretic) wished that the game was completely level-less. As in no levels at all, ever. Just skills to raise and every now and then some raises to health, mana, stamina but without the idea of levels. I don't think most people would dig it, but I would.

This is my first Elder Scrolls game that I have played and the first rpg I have played (except Zelda) so I'm new to this levelling up concept.

What I don't understand is why exactly you think you should be able to reach the games level cap just playing with destruction magic?, why do you think you have earned that?. You can't even call yourself a Mage if all you use is one type of magic, you haven't even bothered to learn any other school and your whining about not being able to reach the level cap.

So if the game was rewrittent to suit you and you could reach the level cap by level destro only where does that leave players who have spent the time and effort levelling up ALL schools of magic, or those who have levelled up every skill in the game. You would be on level 81 and they would be on level 81.

Do you really think it would be fair for a player who masters one ability to be at the same level as someone who masters EVERY ability?. Of course it wouldn't that's just stupid. It's like in school, in a mythical world where you got an A* for English but flunked every other subject, do you think your should therefore be eligible to apply for Oxford/Cambridge just like those students who got A* in every subject?.

I can't believe I joined this forum just to reply to this rubbish.

Everyone eventually realizes this and you find that here's no point to most of the game. The story is awful, the characters are awful and you can simply MAKE better gear than you will ever find. For some reason, though, it's a ton of fun to sit down and play; it's and extremely pretty world.
Hmm ... dunno ... to me it's actually much less fun than I expected.
I had TONS more fun in Fallout3 at high level.

@OP
Yep, the TES leveling system is not that good.
It's a cool idea, but it's not thought out to its end. They could enhance a proper XP based system with it, but the whole "leveling by doing" for its own is just not really a good mechanic.

I like levelling, and the point it stops is usually an 'awww' moment.

But for me, the overriding joy factor lies in exploring: finding new places and cool stuff, knocking heads together, hoarding gold in a way that would make a bank boss blush, uncovering cool items and Easter eggs... That's the true joy of Bethesda games, not levelling.

OK lets think about what you are saying...the only thing a 'level" gives you is a perk and 10 points in the 3 majors.

You state:

I don't want to use any other abilities other than my main (which I am sure if that is true then you have used all of your perks in that ability)

Then you do not need perks to use in other trees...you said you do not want to use them.

sooo you do not need levels either as thats all you get from leveling.

Your logic is sorta confusing.
this why are you so desperate to level if you have your skill at 100?

To me I feel its more of a problem with both progression, as someone else said, but due to the fact that the world is open there is never a place where your capped skills are needed. There is no enemy or fight that calls for 100 in a skill tree, making the only point of achieving that goal is that you enjoyed fighting in that style. But at 100 you become absurdly powerful. So the fact of absurd power and nothing to test said power against leads to boredom, although I do agree with the statement that dungeon exploring and questing falls entirely flat when you will gain nothing loot wise out of the venture.

You could play a new game? Although if not then.... Maybe you should play an MMORPG with forever lasting rewards for continuously leveling to infinity on a single Character with ever lasting difficulty, and power.

How about Mabinogi?

Other then that, I got nothin.

It's a lot of Sturm und Drang when all we are really talking about is the OP gradually reducing the Magicka cost of Destruction magic. It's never going to get lower than zero, so at some point he will be unhappy.

My bad for not looking into this a little more from the 1st. this game seems totally backwards to me, i get xp for making daggers and wearing armor? And nothing for killing dragons or questing? What a fail concept! I have more fun playing Tomb raider! More control, more camera control. More to do. Just a better made game from the start. And that's sad for a company like Bethesda.

It looked like a good idea when i was looking for something to replace 7 years of wow. Guess i'll go play some Tomb raider or start up my sub to wow again.

You fail Bethesda!

Thing is, since my "Destruction Master" Mage hit 100 skill in destruction that's it - he will never get any better. As I level other skills, doing what people here suggest and diversify - which can be fun, my Destruction only gets proportionally weaker.

Even when I first hit level 100 in destruction with all perks taken I was by no means that powerful. My very best attacks still drain me of magicka in 3 double-cast shots, and it takes 5 or 6 such shots to kill a dragon and there are plenty of foes far tougher than dragons. As a pure mage I've also done nothing but select Magicka each level up, I don't wear armour, just robes and enchanted clothing, so I am fairly agile and do need to run if a melee opponent gets close.

Now I have been diversifying with conjuration and that's coming along nicely, as is my enchanting finally, however now my levels (and I do level simply by playing, not grinding) come along by doing other stuff.

My point is, if you focus on one or two skills you can get to 100 quite quickly and feel fairly powerful, which is cool. However after this your abilities in the first skill you mastered get proportionally weaker each level vs. the higher-leveled foes you begin to encounter.

At level 25 (overall) my Mage felt pretty damn tough with some powerful one or two-shot attacks. Now at level 35, against characters that are still just Bandit Bosses, Drauger Bosses, Dragons and especially Falmer, my attacks are getting progressively less effective with no way to increase them as I'm already a Master.

For my character now is a good time to look at enchanting so I can compliment my damage dealt, or Smithing/Armour so I can survive better. The former fits in with a Mage-type character, the latter does not.

So, the game does give the player options to continue to level, but for many going out of character, or into a different role in this Role Playing Game, isn't how they enjoy the game.

Luckily, for PC owners at least, mods can come to the rescue but still, I'd be nice to have somewhere to go after mastery - maybe degrees of mastery once you hit skill 100. Possibly a tree of extra perks that ALL require level 100 base so you can continue to further hone your chosen specialised skills.

Scoob.

You do realize that the MMO part of MMORPG is Massive Multiplayer Online right? Just because you want a dynamic and scaling system does not mean you have to go to a subscription based MMO and be forced into a party/raid/social system. It is very frustrating when people suggest "going back to WoW" or any other MMORPG. It is rather simple to create a system that scales nearly infinitely. The game should be structured so that you are always progressing, from the time you start the game, to the time you finish the last dungeon, last quest possible in the game (if you take it that far). I don't think that is a pipe dream. Of course this means your Perks might be capped out, but there are other forms of progression, namely stats and itemization. The itemization in Skyrim is contrary to the environment and game they have structured. That is a problem. For many players, this means that you effectively have beaten the game before the closing credits or some magnificent boss battle. It is anticlimactic and extremely dissatisfying. This really and truly is not a difficult system to implement here, parts of it have been done time and time again. Mass Effect 1 did a fairly excellent job at this...

My 1st character was like the OP's gf 2h heavy armor. I got to 100 skill in both by lvl 30, and yeah I was concentrating on just those skill's, I would guess unlike her ( and the OP) to an extent I used other skill's, minor to be sure. yep I lvl'd alot slower, and my response is SO what. I played using my perfered style, I didn't pay all that much attention to lvl. I still had lot's of fun and some of the NPC'd kicked my butt. Finished the MQ,college and companion's, never started theives or DB, lots of side quests.
The only reason I started over with a new character ( so soon ) was because I ran into a glitch, Even after completing the quest an doing a certain part again,I'm still a wer-wolf or actually only 1/2 a one, no power's! Different subject.
Am I gonna play the same way again, yes and no, picking up archery for ranged, alchemy for potions and light armor instead of heavy.
Not to sound completely stupid, but don't you "level up" for speech , pick lock's and sneak? I would think even someone only using magic would still sell things, buy thing's, pick lock's and sneak now and again. And yeah I realize that would be a very slow way to level up, but you still would.
Maybe making it harder to get your skill's leveled to 100 would work, then again maybe not. No matter how "hard" it is to level up or "skill up" someone's gonna think it could be harder, or done differently.
As I tell my husband on his "shooter" game's, they are what they are. If it was easy to get past each "level" how much fun would it be? It's a game and has perameters.
Deal with it.

That isn't very convincing considering Skyrim is easy to get past each "level" or dungeon, or encounter etc. Skyrim by no means whatsoever is a challenging game.

Leveling and skilling up is totally irrelevant in Skyrim? What? What makes you come to that conclusion?
Because the game (like most RPG's) is about experiencing the journey.

Unfortunatly most gamers these days are stuck in a MMO mindset and mostly care for leveling and loot, so while people can play the game any way they want being stuck in the MMO mindset IS the wrong way to play the game.

EDIT: also while some games claim to be MMORPGS they really aren't, you don't have any choices you can only play them one way - WoW is probably the worst in that regard.

Agree 100%

Morrowind is a perfect example, i remember how i used to soultrap every dagoth member in a grand soul gem and placed them next to all the heartwright items and a house dagoth cup in my stronghold, sort of a trophy collection of my enemies souls and items, it took me forever after i already did the main quest and a lot of faction/freelance/daedric quests, it was a lot of fun and my collection looked beyond godlike cool with candle lights that shined red all over the room.

There are tons of gameplay hours in independent progression, but it gets harder for every tes release imho.

I miss placeable lanterns and candles, that was my collection in Morrowind. Skyrim's lanterns and candles you can't even move or equip, :(

You think that progression and loot is an idea created by MMORPGs? LOL! How old are you exactly? You do not play the game FOR LEVELING AND LOOT. However, the "journey and experience" is supported and fostered by LEVELING AND LOOT. This is a traditional RPG model. In most RPGs even old school ones, by the time you finish the storyline your character still is not complete. In Skyrim, your character and progression is complete WELL before you finish the storyline or finish the content. If the game was truly just about the journey, there would be no loot or levels in Skyrim. Do you know how crappy of a game it would be without progression or itemization???

I, too, had a collection of everything encased in a Grand Soul Gem in Morrowind - from a mudcrab to the various Dagoths.

I also had a nice display with candles & House Dagoth cups.
