Lost power yesterday morning (Sunday) and officials are saying we will be out until Thursday. The thermostat says it's about 42 degrees in that part of the house, but I've been keeping a fire going since Sunday and it's nice and toasty in here. Thank God I camp a lot, all my gear came in handy. My dad slept in my sleeping bag liner, my mom slept in my sleepingbag, and I slept with covers next to the fire. The only piece of gear that would be nice to have is a bivy bag, but I gave it to my sis when she went to college. telling he police are parents to not bring their kids trick-or-treating, which means all the candy is mine :evil:

I'm assuming you are burning wood?

I'm one of those Jersey peeps. I too have had a fire going to keep warm. My house has remained between 71-75* in all of the rooms running a fire at 350*. I burn coal though so my tend times are a lot longer, I can go 12+ hours before having to put fuel in. That and my stove holds 160 pounds of fuel in the fire box and an additional 60 pounds in the hopper. But it sure does make a difference having a fire. like you we've been told Friday by JCP&L with a big, "MAYBE" at the end of it.

We don't do it when there's a little snow. We do it when there's a LOT of snow.

The last two winters haven't been typical at all and those are the only ones I remember where people have gone :ahhh:

That "lot" of snow wasn't much, depending on where you are I guess, in Glasgow and people were panicing and what not as if there was 10 inchs of snow.
Like just down from my old house there is a storage place that contains 100s if not 1000s of tons of salt and grid and still people here were going nuts about a shortage of it when really the snow wasn't that deep in the first place.

Plus I'm running a generator to power some things in the house. No computer, I have to do that at work. Gas is very expensive though and I have to buy 5 gallons a day.

To run it all day long it costs about $80 <_<

Mine runs my refrigerator, living room lights, living room fans, several outlets which include the Tv; satellite receiver; XBOX; Wii; and the computer w/ internet when I'm feeling froggy, the bathroom lights; fan and heater, my sump pump, septic system pump, oil fired furnace, draft inducer (for my coal stove when I need it; although under normal operating conditions the inducer is not needed, but I'm still "idling" the stove at low temps). On 9 gallons of gas it runs for 12 hours. So, I keep between 5 and 10 gallons on hand each day; 5 for the day and 5 for night, sometimes I'll keep 15 gallons on hand.

I have an old gas tank and fill tube from my car that I plan on making a spare tank that I can carry around in my pickup. I'll be able to fill it (it holds 12 gallons) then I can transfer that fuel to my generator as needed. I lose power every few weeks where I live and when the power goes out it's out for weeks.
