Snow At Last, Snow At Last

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:57 pm

Why is it that schools/etc close when it snows in the US? I thought snow were rather common in some parts of the US?

And it's dangerous to have school buses carrying loads of kids in snowy weather, they have to wait until the roads are clear. Or, snow hits an area of the country that cannot plow properly and is totally unprepared. My area, a fairly snowy area, cancels school about twice a year. For this to happen, it has to happen at the right time, i.e. start snowing heavily around 2am and go strong through the morning. If it snows in the evening, it usually gets cleared in time for school the next day.

Nothing yet. But this year the people should be prepared so we're not running out of salt for the roads if it snows a lot. Last time they ended up using bathing salts. 'Todays road scent: Apple!'.

I live in England. It snows in like march for us :/

I actually grimaced when I sat this thread and thought 'holy crap, please don't let him live in Scotland'...

Still no snow over here in the UK :/

Thank. God. However if it feels like snowing the week starting 14th November to give me some extra Skyrim time I'm entirely up for that... ;)

Meteorologist said we had too hot of a Summer (several days of constant 100+) and said the snow won't stay on the ground because it is too warm :(

Due to being English, living in a flat rain shadow and basically on the coast (if you stand on a bank at the end of my garden, stand on tip-toes and are over six foot, you can sea the sea on a clear day), snow is a rare event. And when we do get it, its normally that horrible stuff that's mostly congealed hail. That said, we got some cracking snow last year in December and January. Snow in October though? I'm still clinging to the vague idea of summer right now.

We were told to expect snow around the end of this month, but it's not looking likely right now. It has got noticeably colder though, down to about 5-6°C today from 10-15°C last week. There's time yet with British weather :P

That's it?

In the midwest it snows from like October to March. Sometimes April :(

You too? Last year our first snow was in early October and the last major snow was in the second week of June. There was a ton of snow in my front yard and backyard until it finally melted in the beginning of July.

The schools in our area don't usually close unless there's a power outage in the winter. The city and access in and out of town almost never gets shut down even during major snows in which it's not uncommon to get 5-8' (152-244 cm) overnight. In the middle of the season last year, this is what my front yard looked like in the middle of winter. My two story house is back behind the pile. This is a photo on my friend's account of my him and me (with black boxes covering us). http://bit.ly/s4IYsb

Wow. Our winters don't seem so bad anymore.

Our schools only ever closed when the road conditions were too dangerous (too much snow that can be plowed in time for schools, or too much ice) or when it was just too damn cold. Like around -35-40 Celsius (give or take a few Cs) cold (before the wind is factored in). Didn't happen too often though. I remember once it hit just under -50C with the wind. I went outside wearing just boxers to see how cold it'd be. Lesson.setLearnedStatus = true;

I snowblow my own driveway (70'/21.3m long by 15'/4.5m wide) which takes FOREVER...and if it's snowing hard, by the time I'm done, I've gotten a nice layer of snow on it again. Now THAT, I get sick of by the middle of snow season.

Average low here is -8C in the winter, and the coldest is supposed -34C... At even 0C, I'd get some major shrinkage with just boxers on...and I'd rather not feel that. :)

A friend of mine had a nvde romp in the snow a while back. And he's trim/muscular, not like one of those "Polar bear" guys. Dude's crazy.

At least you had snow blower. Always had to shovel mine. Luckily I have two siblings. I think that's the only time I've ever been grateful to not being an only child.

That's it? :P That's our average high over the three "winter" months (named as such due to being the three coldest months). The average low for those three months is a bit lower than -20. There's usually a two week span in January where the temperature during the day is almost always around -30, if not colder.

Heh, no way my back could take shoveling that much snow. :)

Yeah, I'm quite happy it doesn't get much colder than it does here. If it's too cold, the snow gets hard and hurts when you fall in it while snowboarding/skiing. :)

Whereabouts are you? I know in Montana a lot of the snow didn't even melt over the summer.. poor bastards.. and that's all coming down into my area in the spring :(. Tons of people along the Missouri have been getting annihilated by the flooding. England ain't [censored].. lol... people saying they get snow in England... I'd take fish and chips and crappy rainy weather over boiling hot summers and 4ft snows in the winters. lol

[...] there's been quite a bit of snowfall in recent hours, and school closures are likely.

Wait, what?!? School closures for first snows? How many inches? First snow is fun but rarely abondant (well from where I am). I was just thinking of getting snow tires in late September but had to wait because my garage was renovating. I'll be doing this next week, and I'm still ahead of most people around here. November usually gets the first snows and it's like 1-2 inches, nothing fancy.

I live near Lake Tahoe, CA. Got something like 35' of snowfall last winter in my particular area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_tahoe Yeah, that svcks about Montana. And the flooding does too. One of my friends took me on a small trip to St. Louis once and the river was somewhat high when I was there. Nice city though.

Do you get a discount living in the area if you go to the ski resorts? Christ I wish I lived that close to them.

Yeah, at least at some for a day pass. Most of them give discounted season passes. And there are a lot of other businesses that give locals discounts. It's nice, since I'm about 15 minutes away from Sierra and Heavenly and about 40 minutes away from Kirkwood. A little over an hour from Northstar, Squaw and Mt. Rose. The lame thing is if you snowblow your own driveways and walkways, you gotta get out there often, and you can't let it sit too long or you get ice.

Oh yeah, and Northstar got bought so if you buy a season pass, you get access to Vail, Beaver Creek, etc.
