Snow At Last, Snow At Last

Wait, what?!? School closures for first snows? How many inches? First snow is fun but rarely abondant (well from where I am). I was just thinking of getting snow tires in late September but had to wait because my garage was renovating. I'll be doing this next week, and I'm still ahead of most people around here. November usually gets the first snows and it's like 1-2 inches, nothing fancy.

We got about 8-10 inches (maybe more) where I live, and it was the first snow. So yeah, it was quite the doozy as they say.

Snow? In October? Not often in Wisconsin. We get most of our snow in January/February. First snow is anywhere from Late November to early December.

It snowed here Saturday. 6 inches of it, but most of it didnt stick. I am ok with snow....unless it knocks the power out, which this storm did.

I heard there been 5 people killed so far, by the cold or falling debris I dunno. But it does seem chaotic.

You can all take your snow and shove it where the sun don't shine. Seriously. I can't catch a break. [censored]ing weather. I got about 8" of heavy wet snow. A tree fell on my truck and another one fell on my house. I lost power on Saturday and we've been given no inclination from the power company as to when the power will be restored. So, here I am yet again for the 90th time running my generator constantly.

Lost power yesterday morning (Sunday) and officials are saying we will be out until Thursday. The thermostat says it's about 42 degrees in that part of the house, but I've been keeping a fire going since Sunday and it's nice and toasty in here. Thank God I camp a lot, all my gear came in handy. My dad slept in my sleeping bag liner, my mom slept in my sleepingbag, and I slept with covers next to the fire. The only piece of gear that would be nice to have is a bivy bag, but I gave it to my sis when she went to college. telling he police are parents to not bring their kids trick-or-treating, which means all the candy is mine

My apologies for any spelling mistakes, this was written on a phone, and Autocorrect can be weird sometimes.

Careful it doesn't get too low. Pipes bursting from freezing is pretty lame. :P We lost power for like 12 hours once 'cuz some drunkard took out a telephone pole. That sorta svcked.

The pipes should be fine, for some reason we still have hot water....
I also forgot to say that I don't have school today, and probably will not have it tomorrow either. Kinda bittersweet, since I can't play on my computer!

Haha, yeah, that's pretty lame too. Time for a generator? ;) Last winter we had a bunch of huge trees fall over because of the snow, and my Japanese maple tree had a huge branch break off. Now it looks all lopsided and stupid. :(

I hate snow!!! Nothing in the world gets you cabin fever quicker then being stranded in your home weeks on end then getting snowed in. Now because of the bad summer we had I expect winter is going to be hell  .

Ugh, that weekend snow messed me up. I was traveling to NJ to visit my brother and nephews, the weather in Maryland was crap-tastic - icy wet snow. I had not seen the weather report, because normally this time of year, the weather is generally fine. It took me two hours to go from Baltimore to near the Delaware border up I-95, and I pulled into a rest stop to chill because it was stressful driving, had gotten stuck for a while behind and accident etc. My phone rings and it was my brother in North NJ - calling to tell me that if I was closer to home than to their place, that I should turn around. So I did - I spent 3.5 hours on the road to go... nowhere.

Stupid early snow.

I've been living in North Carolina for two years now (moved here from the mountains of south-west Virginia) and it hardly snows, but when it does, the locals act like there is a tornado about, its hilarious.

Snow? I wish. We get rain 6/7 days of a week here. If it does miraculously snow, it'll be slush very soon.

I never understood the whole thing in some places that an inch or two brings a whole city to a standstill. (Take Seattle for instance...)

It makes perfect sense if the city doesn't normally get a lot of snow. They just can't budget a considerable amount each winter to clearing snow since it's so irregular.

My main point wasn't clearing snow. A few inches can be overcome by driving carefully. Even with a two wheel drive vehicle not carrying tire chains. I do it all the time where I live in more than a few inches. Even when I lived in a more warm area (before moving to my current location at high elevation), to visit my folks I usually go on a windy mountain road which gets snow...and I never had problems. :)

I live in Newfoundland, and our weather is really dumb. No one can predict the snow. I remember when I was little, we'd get tons and tons of it like, a month before December, even before November sometimes, and it wouldn't go away for literally months.

Last Christmas? We didn't even get snow until a month after Christmas, and it went away about two weeks later. I personally hope we get lots this Christmas. I love snow for some reason. I love the cold, too.

Man, Christmas without snow feels really awkward and not that fun.

I live in Nova Scotia, and the weather is like that here too, and I completely agree about the Christmas thing.

Today, there was a light dusting of snow on the ground, but it was all gone before 8pm. I'm looking forward to more snow, because that means skiing, skating, and all the other fun winter activities, and school cancelations. I'm not looking forward to blowing the driveway though, that's not fun at all.

Refugee here.

Yeah, the snow has absolutely devastated a large chuck of New England and some surrounding states. Trees have fallen everywhere, crushing roads, power lines, homes, and cars. We're going to be without electricity for a long time, several days or weeks more. The local school is being used as a shelter and the infrastructure of everything else has just been absolutely [censored] on.

The problem isn't that we got a particularly large amount of snow, but that it was so heavy and it stuck to everything. Add that with the fact that most of the trees are still green with leaves, and you create a lot of weight in a small space. The trees went down everywhere as a result. My exciting moment was when I got to drive home during the storm. I made it a long way by simply bashing my SUV through fallen tree limbs, but I came across a tree that had fallen all the way across the road and I had to go around through someone else's lawn. I ended up stuck there for an hour in a mixture of water, mud, snow, and slush, trying to dig my way out with a shattered fragment of a telephone pole. I managed to get my car out, but it died today due to whatever damage happened that night.

My area in particular has survived tornadoes and hurricanes this past summer. Those were pretty bad, but I have never seen as much damage dealt to us as I have in this single snowstorm.

As of right now, I'm writing this at the University of Massachusetts where I'm essentially taking shelter, as they have heat, electricity, and internet. When exactly I'll be able to return home, I'm not sure. But I miss my bed and my family, and I'm glad to see that the internet is still doing fine without all of us there. For the time being, I get to work at my job in a power-less grocery store trying to get supplies to the locals that need it.

For all of you that don't know what snow is-

Snow- "Wet, Cold, Evil. It tricks you into thinking it is all about building snowmen, having snowball fights, and building snow forts, but its real intentions are obvious. It covers up icy spots on a walkway so you slip and fall before you have time to think. It laughs at you every time you clear it from your walkway all the while knowing reinforcements are on their way tomorrow. When you are having fun with all your snow time merriment, you will suddenly feel this sensation of extreme cold wash over you and in a matter of seconds your body is almost completely numb. We are warning you now... If you ever come across this snow, make sure you have plenty of food in storage and stay indoors."
