TES Fantasy Baseball #1

As much as I hate the Yankees, Red Sox fan's anguish* is going to be delicious this year.

*Not any specific Red Sox fan, especially not our beloved Z Man, but Red Sox nation in general.

Today was such an epic meltdown. I was talking baseball with some friends tonight, we're all pretty sure that Bobby V's days are numbered at this point.

I had it on but wasn't watching the whole thing. Bobby V is a great manager but I didn't think that was a good hire when they did it.

I am a huge Rays fan this year.

Oh yeah, thanks for Colby Rasmus everyone. Whoever dropped him and everyone else who let him clear waivers. :foodndrink:

Would anyone be interested in trading me an OF? I feel like I'm lacking at that position.

If Ryan Dempster had gone on the DL earlier, I was going to pick up Philip Humber.

I listened to most of that game on the radio and watched the last inning when I got home.

It was crazy how dominant Humber was, at least in the first 8 innings. He had thrown 72 pitches at the start of the 8th. Things almost got away from him a couple of times in the ninth, but he did a great job to fight back from a 3-0 count on Saunders to get the strikeout and got a little lucky when the ump said Ryan didn't check his swing on what would have been ball 4, then AJ made a nice play to keep the ball from getting past him, then Ryan stood there and complained to the ump instead of running to first, which let AJ throw hom out pretty easily. The perfect game should have ended with a walk or a wild pitch on the 27th hitter, but didn't.

So if you are at a game and the opposing pitcher is perfect at what point do you start rooting for the opposing pitcher to throw a complete game against your home town team?

For me as long as the game was close enough that my team could still win it I would be pulling for them. Once it became clear the game was over I would be hoping to see the perfect game. Yesterday it was clear the Mariners weren't going to get 4 baserunners, much less 4 runs so I think most people in Safeco were hoping to see history. They definitely gave him a nice ovation when it was over.

I think it depends a little bit on the circumstances. If my team has a chance to win, I am definitely rooting for my team, and I want my team to keep trying to get that hit or walk.

If the pitcher is somebody like Humber, the type of guy who's going to go down in history as a so-so pitcher who threw a perfect game, I'm rooting for my team throughout. If it is a future Hall of Famer, like Halladay or Randy Johnson, I'll probably root for history. We like to talk about Baseball's history, but lets be honest, Humber's perfect game is a trivia question answer, not history. That being said, I'd definitely applaud him afterwards.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ratwar. It's a cool thing to see, but unless Humber all of a sudden turns it on, he'll be an average pitcher at best. But that list (the 21 perfect games) is not a list to sneeze at, but yet, the number of somehwhat irrelevant pitchers on that list proves that anyone can throw a perfect game, if he has decent stuff and is going against a bad team.

In other news, a strong turnout this week for the Mead Drinkers has me excited!

Complete collapse the last day. Also, who would've thought Pujols would be a disaster pick.

Pujols is going to turn it around.

Now I'm going to get a strong drink, because it pains me to say that.

In my home league I walked away from my 8 hr draft saying to myself that "I had a decent draft" And today I'm at the very bottom sad to say. And in this league I thought I had a horrible draft and I'm in first place.....for now.

In all seriousness, that match up was actually rather saddening. I was winning, because your team was doing horrible. Then my team started doing more horrible than you. Finally, your team once again reclaimed the title of most horrible.

In other news, I am playing sbr this weak. A big test for the Horkers. I always want to beat sbr.

I have a feeling my team will be in the running for that title throughout the season.

Atleast Lincecum had a damn good game today, finally. Now if Pujols would hit a homerun tonight, I'd have faith my team was turning itself around.

I just finished my school league with a bunch of non-intense baseball fans...and it went very well. [Sobriety was banned from the draft]. But what's interesting is that it's a head-to-head points league. It's so weird (and inferior to a h2h category).

Who would have thought Bautista would be a terrible pick? I actually think I am a better baseball player than him. :nope:

Interestingly, so far Second Round picks have provided more value than first rounders... And Matt Kemp provides about a quarter of all value in the first round.

I always raised my eyebrow at him going from never hitting more than 18 homers to what he did the last 2 years. I'm calling fluke or roids.

He would've been caught by now if it was steroids. He was bounced around a lot, and he took more time than usual to figure it out. See: Nelson Cruz.

I don't buy the 'would have been caught by now' argument. These players make so much money, and cheating is so beneficial to that, that it's in their interest, and within their power, to cheat. Ever since George Hincapie threw Lance under the PED bus, I've been able to trust no one. They're all dirty.

Unfortunately I think the masking agents are ahead of the testing. I understand a gradual increase in home runs, but what he did in one year was just not natural imo.

PS: Is this thread just for fantasy, or can it be for baseball in general? Would like a thread to talk up my Rays :)

I totally agree. The cheaters, due to money, are ahead of the testing...at least that's what I think.
