TESV Acceleration Layer offers massive possible performance

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 4:10 am

just an update, I no longer get delayed actions/scripts when dealing with merchants and dialogue

I've deleted both ini files and still use skse with the acceleration layer plugin
everything works flawless along with my improved 8 extra frame rates

I just could not notice a boost in frame rate with this plugin. I did not observe any change with FRAPS either. I use the ENB anti-freeze mod because I get those 5-10 second pauses in the game with Windows XP. Could this be causing any conflicts with the plugin?

The official patch 1.3 definitely fixed the 5-10 second freezes for me, I'm also using XP (and a dual core). Did you update your game? Without updating the game neither SKSE nor the plugin will work. Make sure that the plugin loads correctly - start the game with SKSE loader, put the plugin in the correct folder, use the correct SKSE version and patch the game so it works with that version. In game you can type 'getskseversion' in the console to see whether SKSE load correctly. If it did, check the skse.txt in your skyrim root folder and see whether the TESVAL.dll loaded correctly. Finally make sure you test your framerate in a place that is limited by CPU, which happens mainly in cities (like looking down from Dragon Reach in Whiterun or from Understone Keep in Markarth).

It doesn't work with ENB anti-freeze. ENB is rewriting the code, which used by mod I suppose.

It works with ENB patch, I use it myself. Not to fix freezing (see above), but to fix frame skipping (stuttering, not framerate related) I get when looking at some NPCs.

I played on XP first and never had these issues. Moved to W7 x64 tho to get some sense from my 6 gb ram and hires texture packs, and totally removed them now. Waiting for something better or maybe beth will release their own hires texture pack on steamworks? Beth has enabled LAA officially after all. Who knows. They can move to Crytek way, which released their hires pack for Crysis 2.

Looking down from dragonreach steps.
Went from 19fps upto 24/25fps. (measured using dxtory)

Phenom II X6 1055T (Hexcore, 2.8GHz), Radeon HD 5870, 8GB, Win7 x64, 1920x1080 on a single monitor (3x eyefinity in Skyrim is useless :( ).

All settings ultra except Antialiasing (off) and Shadows (medium), FXAA is off too.
ipresentinterval is set to 0; fps is capped at 60 using dxtory.

In the short term I hope Beth sort out their compiler settings so we can have the entire binary optimised; no doubt we'd see further gains if this were done.(though perhaps not so dramatic)
Longer term I'd like to see them rewrite the whole damn engine so it uses more than 1.4 cores - but that's probably quite unlikely.

Nearly 500 hours in now having major problems with ctd specifically in certain locations (even either side of one specific bridge) not to mention 15 or so broken quests/sqs/missions and numerous redundant quest items etc. Reminds me of the animation glitch from IV which was never fixed on the 360.
Tried installing this:
First problem, verified the game cache through Steam but the TESV.exe file is gone so the loader will not operate. Downloaded a replacement dated 11/11 to the main folder but was not recognized, relocated to the C:\Users\**********\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\skse_1_04_02 directory but the loader now requires I update the game to current version. Ran verify again, same result. Theres also now two src folders, one from this mod (main directory) and one in the skse_1_04_02 (sub) which could also be an issue.
Another problem, downloaded the Nexus mod manager which for some reason would not accept manual or auto-locate option w/out crashing.
Would appreciate any help/direction on how to fix this.

Sounds like you've got a right old mess there.

- Delete everything in the root Skyrim folder, then verify cache in Steam to reacquire the (now missing) files.
- Copy skse mod components into Skyrim root folder
- Install TESVAL plugin; extract zip (preserving dir structure) into \data subfolder of Skyrim root.
- launch skse_loader.exe in Skyrim root folder.
- Profit.

The issues I had were Ralof having an invisible tankard while in his sister's house, the Drunken Huntsman owner having a delay after I clicked on "what do you have for sale?" and doubled-up music playing while in Jarl's keeps/longhouses (two different ambiance musics going at the same time). The fixed version took care of all those issues, whether specifically intended or not. While I didn't test the vendor and music issues, I did test Ralof's missing tankard and it was definitely the previous version plug-in causing it.

I used 1.3.10 with the latest SKSE as of two days ago (12/22/11). The pauses never went away with any update on my part. Though they used to be more severe like 10-20 seconds. I use Whiterun as my benchmark city because I haven't progressed much farther than that yet. Perhaps a setting in my enbpatch.ini is mucking things up? What does your enb ini file look like? I have most settings enabled.

A lot of 5-10 freezing issues are often caused by Video Memory exhaustion at higher settings, especially with high AA or with HD texture mods, which ENB just stops the entire game from freezing indefinitely and also tries to reduce the rate at which it'll freeze. Boris (ENB) explained this as inefficient use of video memory.

What's your video card and have you look at your video memory usage? You can do so with a program like MSI Afterburner.

I have a Geforce 550Ti 1GB GDDR5. I play with 8-16x Anisotropic Filtering and no Anti-aliasing. I've never seen the VRAM usage go above 280MB, even when switching on Anti-aliasing.

EDIT: oh wait, just noticed I have an outdated version of the ENB patch version 5. Will download a new one and see if that helps.

EDIT 2: still no go. I'll try default Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files and see if that helps. I would still like to know what settings you have in your ENB ini file.

Also, I only experience stutters when I don't have the ENB installed.

Probably would be faster to do a fresh reinstall then try to nail a elusive change made a million mods ago.
Saves games still there.
Just make sure all the folders, files in the Skyrim folder are deleted.
Takes me an hour and two episodes of American Dad to re-install.
Once you start mixing mods, misfires are going to happen.

I've read about people sayin how much better FPS they have in town (which is good^^)
but will this affect fps drops in dungeons. I think those drops are related to fog/particles/water effects.. I can't remember if some of that was done with the cpu..

Just wondering, since dungeons are the only places I experience noticeable lag :P

did you try to disable reflection? I found a fix for dungeon fps drop when you look at certain angle. Take a look at this.

Uninstalled and deleted everything else (re-located saves) then d/l the zip file from http://skse.silverlock.org/ and extracted to the root dir. All components appear here in their own folder "\skse_1_04_02". Downloaded again the TESV file and extracted all comps to the "\Data" folder. Same problem, same result: Could not find TESV.exe. Tried relocating the SKSE components directly into the root dir ("- launch skse_loader.exe in Skyrim root folder") with no success... ?

With the ctd issues I tried a number of things to see if it had anything to do with fps/settings etc. At 490 hours there is now another definate dead zone south of Riverwood that causes ctd once you reach the Nirnroot on the right bank (almost the exact spot). It will crash here whether you have been playing for some time or have loaded a fresh save short of the mark. Also, its still possible to fast travel to Embershard but the mine area will not load causing ctd at both access points (multiple trials). Tried altering the performance settings to absolute minmum with the same result.. Went back IG 60 hours and the same area is clear with no issue pn all settings. Same with the road to Kynesgrove where there was the same problem at the western bridge. There was however an issue north of Riften where I spent some time previously trying to locate Illia post Companions ql (another co-incidence as the bridge where it crashes was also where I eventually found her at standing on the bottom of the river so she was obviously having the same problem) .This suggests to me there is a corruption/decay issue in the save data and the end result is exactly what I experienced with the animation glitch in IV. Increasing amounts of dead zones and system crashes/freezes leading to a terminal breakage. Not impressed.....

Well, tried it out now, not as good as i hoped, but still a fairly decent increase:

Solitude worst zone went from 15 to 19 fps.
Down from dragonsreach went from 18 to 20 fps.

Overall i noticed fewer dips in the city, and the fps doesn't jump up and down as much anymore.

Only question that i have is does SKSE interfere with steam in anyway? Or does steam still register play time, achievements etc?

This does works and here is the proof:

First screen is from a Heavily modded 1.3.10 with TESVAL:

http://i.picoodle.com/bc9iurgt

Second screen if from a Default 1.1 install without TESVAL:

http://i.picoodle.com/fa9iurgw (damn having issues with the link)

Its 8 FPS boost even with 1.2Gb of High Res Textures, so anyone saying this does not work has clearly not tried it.

While I don't deny that it work, and it does work, quite well, what you offered is not proof, and is clearly irrelevant. You can't compare 1.3.10 with 1.1 as Bethesda improved a number of things between those two builds.

Like I said, it works. I use it. But what you posted, comparing screenshots from two different builds is pointless. Feel free to post more screenshots from the same build, but it is not really necessary, no one here doubts that it works at this point.

So it only works with the latest version ?
I have steam closed in offline and my game is still 1.1 because when 1.2 patch came brought problems, and to say the truth 1.1 is very stable and fine and I have no problems with it.
But it seems I need this fix because I tried oveclocking my card and I saw no fps difference at all, while overclocking my processor did gave me more fps.

Sounds like you are installing SKSE wrong. SKSE should not have its own folder. All relevant files (skse_loader.exe, skse_1_3_10.dll, etc.) that you need should be placed in the root Skyrim directory. From the readme:
"1. Copy the .dll and .exe files to your Skyrim directory. This is usually in your Program Files folder under Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\. If you see files named TESV and SkyrimLauncher, this is the correct folder."

Not true, SKSE does have its own folder in /Data/SKSE where you drop SKSE wrapped dlls and their configuration files.

In 'Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\' you need
skse_1_3.dll
skse_1_3_10.dll
skse_loader.exe
skse_steam_loader.dll
In 'Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\Data\SKSE\Plugins' you need
TESVAL.dll
