Ok forget the folder. Simply run it, then when it gets to the "browse extraction location" part select Browse, and pick your desktop in the drop down tree it provides. Then run the file that is place on your desktop (vcredist.exe) to install Visual C+. You can then delete it, and keep the compressed version you just extracted from to save HDD space.

My college has students use Cisco Clean Access to get on thier network (even if using a wired connection), and they say it won't work without Symantec Endpoint protection. But I still have a subscription for NOD32. Does anyone know if it will still work because I do not want to sacrifice the security of my system nor use more resources then I need to.

You generally can't have two AV packages on one computer. If they require Symantec, you must use it as a condition of using their network, and if it won't play nice with NOD32, you must remove NOD32. Cisco Clean Access is a policy enforcement tool: if it cannot determine that your computer is running current versions of programs they require, they will exclude you from the network.

I talked with someone at a different school who said they can use it on their schools network without Symantec.

So I just wake up and notice I have a text from a friend. He is asking me to help him with his computer. Here is our conversation.
Him: Man can you help me with my pc?
Me: What happened?
Him: I turned it on, and after I got passed the Windows boot, it blue screens.
Me: Are you able to get into safe mode?
Him: No, I tried, it still blue screens right before the login screen pops up
Me: Do you have the WIndows Installation disk?
Him: No, even if I did, the disk drive is messed up and wont read.
Thats the extent of our conversation so far. Now, I'm not exactly sure what to do. Any suggestions?

That's at a different school.

It's the policy at your school that governs what you must do. If they require Symantec, you use Symantec and don't give them any backtalk about it, or they'll cut you off from the network.

It keeps saying "this program might not have installed properly" and then invites me to reinstall using the recommended settings, which I do, and then nothing happens. No error message, nothing.

Let's get this straight:

1. I download the VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe package to my DOWNLOADS folder.
2. I create a temp folder in Downloads called VC6
3. I extract vcredist.exe to VC6
4. I double-click on it.
5. Nothing happens.

Using Windows 7? I find that error message to be pointless, just ignore it. (just say 'this program installed correctly')

Uninstall all of your Visual C++ 2005 redistributable packages from the 'Programs and Features' part of the control panel, then install, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=200B2FD9-AE1A-4A14-984D-389C36F85647&displaylang=en as well as http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=EB4EBE2D-33C0-4A47-9DD4-B9A6D7BD44DA&displaylang=en if you have a 64 bit OS.

If the game requires the older VC6, then uninstall that too before reinstalling.

Thanks - I have a 32-bit OS (AFAIK). I'm on Vista.

I just tried Vampire TMB and still got the error message. I didn't uninstall anything before trying to install the C++ files, though.

Try to download and install the 2008 version of the C++ runtime which also has a service pack. the .NET framework also itself has a service pack but I doubt that would affect the game.

Ok, my keyboard has started acting pretty weird. It has buttons along the top that control things like Play/Pause, skip to next track, previous track etc plus some that open things like Email and Computer...and also a Volume Wheel. They've suddenly stopped working, and I have no idea.

Has this happened to anyone before?

What's the make and model? The driver may not be working correctly, the default 102/104 keyboard driver doesn't include functionality of those buttons.

I just updated my laptop's video drivers since I had some crashing issues, but now I am crashing more than EVER. I can't even get through one round of TF2! How can I get come older, more stable drivers? Currently I'm using the mobile Nvidia 197.16 . What version should I install instead?

Keep in mind, TF2 is crashing for lot of people with the latest updates. Myself included. It's crashed every time I've tried to play since being able to again. (4 sessions.)

OK, is it on this page? (which one?) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa718359.aspx

Also, since vcredist.exe came back with an error message saying that it didn't install properly after I double-clicked it, what should I do? I mean, have I made things worse? Do I just delete it or do I have to uninstall something using add/remove programs? If I do that, will I accidentally delete yet more essential files?

If it gives any clues, currently Bejewelled and Torchlight run with no errors; Vampire TMB throws up an error but if I press Esc it will let me continue and play the game; Fallout 3 will not start at all.

I honestly haven't got a clue. It's just a pretty generic wireless keyboard. No branding on it at all :s

And I haven't rolled back any drivers or anything.

Why don't you try uninstalling the game and doing a clean install, with the most recent fan patch.

Because it's ALL games except the most graphically simple ones. I suspect it's anything that uses Bink files or anything like it - which is why simple ones like Bejewelled still work. The affected games, AFAIK, are Fallout 3, Morrowind, Oblivion, Mass Effect 2 and Vampire TMB. I haven't tested others.

The problem seems to be that the Visual C++ library isn't installed properly and I don't know how to do that.

I ran that file I got you to download, and get the same install error crap.

Try http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&displaylang=en instead. It worked fine for me this time.

Thank you so much. It seemed to work OK - now to test some games. :)

Ah - no dice - I'm still getting the same error. That's a shame - it means that wasn't the problem. I've also installed the .NET service pack and it still doesn't work. :(

This isn't necessarily a hardware or software question, but it's about technology and it ties into getting a gaming PC, so here it is....

How much could I get for an original 60GB PS3, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Fallout 3 GOTY, Oblivion GOTY, Modern Warfare 2, both Overlord's, Infamous, Guitar Hero 3, 2 controllers, 2 ethernet cables, the guitar controller, and a separate 500GB hard drive?

A tech-friendly pal of mine told me I could get $1000, but I don't really believe him.

I doubt somebody would buy them all as a package. It all depends on what people are willing to pay for each game, but it may take weeks to sell it all.
