OK so here's the story. I tell Lydia to go home and she does as she is told and about an hour later I return to the house to see her leaving as if she was preparing for battle. I decide to follow her but as a horse(used the player.setrace code) so she wouldn't know it was me(RPing anyways.) So I follow her from Breezehome all the way to Riverwood. So now I am getting suspicious and instead of stopping to talk with someone she goes THROUGH Riverwood and goes toward Helgen. So once we get to Helgen she fights off a couple of bandits and then she stops at the basket that was holding the decapitated head of that guard from the beginning of the game. So she stops right there just looking at the basket and all of the sudden a dragon swoops down and attacks! I then transforn back into my character and help Lydia. After the dragon is dead she looks at me and says "Honor to you, my thane." then walks off back to Riverwood. She stops at the Inn and sits around the fire for an hour and goes back home. I decided to see if she would do it again and I followed her for the past 6 ingame days. She gets attacked by animals or bandits on the trip every time! So does anyone else see Lydia doing this?
I actually like Lydia...although her choice of battle tactics can sometimes leave a lot to be desired...from my point of view.
I have seen her wander off and do her own thing on occasion...I found her browsing the shops in Whiterun one day, and have found her looting a few bodies that I hadn't. If you give her a range of enchanted rings and necklaces she swaps them as appropriate, as well...she chooses them better than she does weapons I think.
My Lydia is a lazy cow who just sits in a chair all day munching on bread. And when I try to sleep she just sits there staring at me. I want the adventurous Lydia not the creeper. Can I trade her in?

Same here. As far as Ican tell she never goes out.
In my game Lydia spend all her time in my bedroom constantly siiting in the chair, getting up and sitting back down again. It can't be much of a life, poor dear.
Sorry bro, I call BS. The NPCs will follow script packages given to them in advance. Eat, sit, walk around, sleep, all governed by script packages. They don't tell her to walk to Helgen.

This is exactly what she does in my game too. I've never even seen her go into a different room, much less go out of the house, much less travel to a different city.
Lydia evidently took a few too many blows to the head before becoming my Housecarl. Now she just plays a rapid one-person, one-chair game of musical chairs all day long. Up-down-up-down...
Annoying as hell.
*edit - missed the other posts on this, but still annoying as hell.

same here she never ever leaves my house, just munching on my bread in MY room
the very first time she became my housecarl, we left whiterun, she was then killed 50 feet from whiterun by a dragon and 2 giants, probley for the best, considering one person musical chairs seems a horriable way to live.
Maybe she'll do all this stuff if you "part ways" with her. She's still your housecarl, of course, she just won't be your follower until you tell her to follow you again. If that's the case, perhaps they gave her a script to follow anytime you weren't using her as a follower.
I do like Lydia and I've stuck with her since early times all the way to about level 42, just because she's decent in (most) fights. Even if she goes down she still usually keeps some of the attention off me.
Because she lives in my house, eats all my food, doesn't pay rent, and tells me to put things down as if it's her business what I pick up in my own house. All that and no trim. That's reason enough to hate hetr

I took away her sword and gave her a kettle and broom. Its time she learnt to earn her keep!

Well, I think she's marriageable, although I think it requires a console fix - so you could always marry her and not get any from your wife, as opposed to not getting any from your housecarl.
