The game is dead

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 8:28 am

I have 170+ hours of ingame time, shared over 3 characters consisting of a mage, a warrior and a stealth user. I've done main quest, fought in the civil war, done the quest for the College, done craploads of miscellaneous quests and cleared 100+ draugr filled dungeons.

And now, the game is just repetitive, tedious and annoying. Too many bugs, a flawed leveling system (try it over 3 characters!), similar quests over and over, and 75% of the content is directly ripped from Oblivion, but with a new packing.

I was so hyped over this game to begin with, and hoped that I could build a new life in a way, just as I'd done in Oblivion and Fallout 3. But even housing is bugged in this game. It's just so... uninspiring. It doesn't challenge my imagination or curiosity at all.

I know this is the 1000th thread of this kind, but when you reach this point you kind of need to share it with other people. Because it's so sad. :(

EDIT: That said, how do I make the game interesting again? Because I figure we can all agree that it's one of the most flexible games/game engines there is, and it would be a waste not to exploit this.

At least if you calculate the ((flexibility of game/game engine)/graphics) ratio.

Buy a game you've never played. Play it for a few months. Return to a patched Skyrim with CK releases.

Use PISE and Deadly Dragons, then wait for the CK if you're on PC.

I agree with you partly BUT, tell me other games that give you 170+ quality hours playtime.

Hmmm... around 200 hours in, 120 of that on my Bosmer Archer, only questline completed fully is the Mages Guild, map not fully revealed, doing the thieves guild. I guess we play different. The exploration and wandering in this game, occasionally doing whatever quests I feel like, has been pure awesome for me. Relatively problem free too, I might add. :)

I never understand people that over-hype anything - it just sets you up for almost certain disappointment. As you have just proven to yourself. :( I play games for enjoyment. If I am not enjoying a game, I try another one or just go do something else.

Most good multiplayer games. Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect, Morrowind, Oblivion.

170 hours in what, 57 days or so since release?

Few games offer that much hours of gameplay, let alone have you interested enough to waste so much of your time in just 57 days.

The game might have flaws and bugs but since you were able to spend that much time on it, I don't think you have any grounds to complain. People who experienced a gamebreaking bug in the first hour or thought the game was boring after 10 hours, they have good grounds to complain.

Of course you are allowed to complain about the flaws and such, but since you were able to put 170 hours into it, I don't think you should complain about it being boring now. Few games can match even half of those statistics!

Both of the predecassors kept me entertained for a lot longer. The real deal-breaker I think, are the underwhelming guilds.

Sorry m8, but this game is NOTHING like Oblivion. Perhaps you are a tad objective oriented? No offense intended, but what exactly were you expecting?

Your argument seems akin to someone who just bought Stargate on DVD, and proceeded to marathon seasons 1 through 10 in a single sitting.

By season 5 or 6 you would certainly be nearing the limits of human fatigue, and by season 8 it would all seem like a blur as you pound energy drink after energy drink just to finish… "Gotta catch ‘em all!”

Then, the review would be something like “they go through the gate, they shoot some snake minions, over and over, just a total Star Trek rip-off!” Something to be said for stopping to smell the roses, bro.

I guarantee you, 150 hours is not possibly enough to experience the full game as intended. Perhaps RPG is not your preferred genre?

Any flight simulation, any race simulation, since skyrim is a simu?ation of some kind even if poor this is not a feat at all. Even more when previous title gave much more.

Yep, true words.

Every TES game does this with me, play it like crazy, get bored and annoyed, come back later and play it some more.

There's something about the TES formula that's amazing until the little things start to annoy you, and you can see some of the seams the sew the world together..that's when you know it's time for a break.

A: It is a logical fallacy to compare the number of hours of entertainment provided by a MMORPG *or* a RTS w/ online multiplayer to the number of hours of entertainment provided by a single player CRPG. (regarding WoW, EVE, C&C). Heck in 2.5 years of everquest between '99 and '01, my character had something like 150 DAYS worth of hours played.

B: Sim City 4 is barely a 'game'... It's more of a toolkit with some game-like attributes

C: you spent 170 hours on GTA:SA? I almost got 100% completion and it didn't take anywhere near 170 hrs. Granted, after my first play-through I used the 100% completion guide to see what I may have missed, but...

That threw me for a loop too, GTA:SA should only be that long if you play SA Multiplayer...

TES is becomming for simulation orientated but its simulation gameplay isn't driving the experience (yet).

Simulating race and flight remains fun when done right, just like sports, MMOs and FPS. It is a repetitive action that can keep on suprising due to the challenge it offers and the actions of other participants (NPCs or players).

TES games become repetitive once you've done all the content or once you've made a god character. As TES games improve on quality the quantity has to suffer. They are still huge games but now just more gorgeous and with more detail to them. Now NPCs talk, they are animated which makes it harder to generate content. Previously a quest designer could design a quest from A to Z, putting the quest objectives in the game as well as the written dialogue. Now it requires team-work as animators and voice actors are also involved.

For this reason you can't cant compare TES to simulation games or games that take quantity over quality (such as MMOs). But even if you could make such a comparison than 170 hours is still a lot of gameplay for the price. Few other singleplayer RPGs offer so much gameplay.

Did they?

Have you played them non-stop every day, looking up every quest, finding every secret in one sitting, or you played it in short playtroughs?

I've played Daggerfall for months to prepare for this game, and while I'm not nearly even at the half point, I'm already sick of it. Sick of the bugs, sick of the repetitive, randomly generated envoirment, sick of the unfairness, sick of the slow main quest...

A: You asked, I answered. You didn't limit it to single player games

B: Opinion

C: I was an angsty teen with the need to kill people - virtual or not - and I found the game to be perfect for that.

Who said I played Skyrim non-stop everyday? You ought to stop making generalizations and projecting your own habits unto others. That being said, I still play Morrowind and Oblivion and find new things to entertain me. And yeah, when Oblivion came out (yes Oblivion), I played it for months non-stop, without any mods.

170+ hours is still a bloody good run! :) Leave it be and move on I reckon. You got what you got out of the game, and that was enough to keep you entertained for a heck of a long time, and now it's time to put it away, get off these forums and try a new game.
