The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 9:32 am

Was re-watching the first episode and...

Spoiler
... noticing the irony of the last scene where Amon says "So, the avatar has returned early..." made me chuckle
edit: found it

The first ep was pretty sweet. I like Korra a lot more than I thought I would.

I wonder if a person can be born with power over two elements... ie. Water and Air because of the parents having different elements.

I'm pretty sure it becomes one or the other. Either the kid takes after the mother or it takes after the father, and if either of them is any sort of a bender they become benders of that sort too. And even then...

Spoiler
Aang the avatar himself had 3 children with Katara and at least one of them took after him but was only an airbender, and then in the 1st episode of this new series it is revealed that the kid in question had 3 kids all of which are air benders with a woman that isn't a bender and that they have a 4th one coming that she is hoping won't be a bender but will be more like her.

So it's safe to assume the kid just takes after either the mother or the father and that they don't mix traits. But even then Toph didn't have bender parents if I remember right. So perhaps it can even run past generations but even then it seems people aside from the avatar are mostly just a bender of one kind or not a bender at all.

Eh, I don't know about this one. I was a huge fan, and I mean huge fan of the first series with Azula, Zuko and Aang and etc. But this really seems a bit modernized and more on the anime side. I remember the Last Airbender was more of a westernized animation that had it's own style.

I already said it in this thread, but it's 70 years later. In the original, the Fire Nation was already in an industrial revolution. In here it looks like they are at the equivalent of very our early 1900s. From our industrial revolution to then, it was only a 100 years, give or take depending on where you peg the Fire Nation to be in theirs. That's pretty close to our own advancement, not to mention that they have benders to help accelerate their modernization. Seems pretty realistic in terms of advancement to me, and I hardly would consider the early 1900s "modern".

Are you sure you watched the same Avatar I did? The artwork in this one seems pretty much the same as in the original from what I've seen so far.

Spoiler
I loved her, I wasn't expecting Toph to have a kid but after seeing her daughter I wouldn't have her any other way :P she seems very fitting for Toph and the position she is in and the amount of metalbenders everywhere seems to point to Toph having been a pretty influential person in her lifetime.

I also forgot Toph wasn't a ray of sunshine either when she first met Aang and Katara. :P So I guess we'll see some development with her daughter.

I think bending ablilities are all codominant traits. But they also have recessive alleles (non benders)

So if a air and water bender crossed. It'd be a mix, but only one bending ability can be dominant, and if they are both carriers of the recessive trait, they could potentially have a non-bender.

If this is the case, then my theory doesn't work.

Bending must be recessive, but I can't see how that can be with the amount of benders in the world. Oh well, no point in applying genetics to a cartoon :P

I'm looking forward to this, but will not end up watching it until it ends up on Netflix, as I don't actually have TV.

It looks cool IMO, but I am a little sceptical about what looked to be cars and phonelines. I am not going to judge it before I have seen some of it though.

70 years is a long time, think of our own industrial revolution. Considering the whole fleets of iron ships the Fie Nation had (do you know how much infrastructure it took to build *one* iron-clad ship, let alone hundreds or even thousands?), not to mention all their other technology (huge land-train that could travel over any terrain, a preposterously massive drill, zeppelins, etc), it would have been more strange for them not to have things like cars and phones by this time.

I think the more serious brother is going to be the "Katara," aka, Korra's love interest. Which is eh. Hope they don't put too much focus on it. The other brother is probably going to be the Sokka.
