The South and the North

I hate the word "pop". It just sounds dumb.

This. Especially when my family from MI says it. I don't know why, but they draw the o out in some nasal annoying way and it drives me batty. Besides, you just don't meet people from around here who use the term 'pop'. It's either soda or coke.

Well people don't really walk around saying "Gimme some pop." Or "I want a sodapop!" They say "Gimme a soda." or "I want a soda!"....

I didn't know commonplace etiquette was so confusing around here..

People were mad that they called them Ma'am or sir?

Ok.....I live in Kentucky just west of Virginia and I say Ma'am and sir quite a bit.

I'm such a rude person....

Huh that pop graph is pretty accurate, I live in Louisville and we usually say coke.

I'm with you here. No clue what a coffee bar is. And Cletus and Jasper would be more stereotypical names.

Other countries have a North and a South, shocking...

But we are clearly talking about the American north and south, so referencing region differences in other countries is completely redundant and likely to cause confusion.

OT: In all honesty, I think the biggest differences between the North and the South pertain to food. Go try and find some home made sweet tea in New York. I dare you.

It's not really specified in the title of the thread and the differences between the North and South in small, insignificant countries like my own are still quite interesting.

I just thought I'd point it out, as you seemed genuinely confused by what Turns had said.

My grandma made that at a family gathering once. Pretty sure that's what it was, I dislike the taste of tea so I only took a little sip.

<--- My location is listed over there.

Iced tea is the only kind of tea. Hot tea is awful.

The only iced tea I like is the instant powdered kind, y'know the one that tastes nothing like tea.

Beats naming your children Stan and working in a coal mine in South Shields until you die.

While complaining about southerners just because they have such unneeded luxuries like an inside toilet and running water, as well.

Interestingly, the North/South divide in England is the other way around than in the US. Over here, the south is the civilized bit.

Georgia is overall a very pleasant place to be. I do not know what it is, but everyone is nice. New York kind of has a reputation for being rude to everyone. I live in florida and it is almost like being up north. Funny part though about the OP's original post though is that actually, Virginia was part of the Confederate states during the civil war, which makes it kind of ironic that people refer to it as north. If I had a choice, I would most likely be living in a house on top of a mountain in Georgia. It is just beautiful up there.

Yep, I liked the south. I mean, I felt sorry for alle the homeless folks and the rundown, shabby city of Atlanta but the people there were just great. Actually, the black people seems to me as the most friendly folks , maybe because they are a bit more humble. IDK... I gave twenty bucks to a homeless black guy, scandinavian mentality I guess :P

lol. Atlanta is the capital of Georgia so it makes sense you have homeless people there. I do not think I have scandinavian mentality, but I do feel sory for some of them as they seem to have a true story and have trouble with life and you can help, but beware. There are people who are pretending to be homeless or sick, even during the japan earthquake, people would set up donations , but only keep the money for themselves. It is horrible.

Yeah, but the guy I met seemed sincere. First thing he did was getting something to eat.

Very good then.
ON TOPIC: The south and the north are two different animals altogether. The more south you go, the more north you seem to get. It also works with the further north you go, the more southern it becomes, with the exception of the New England states.

I'm from the South, we've always said Yes Ma'am and No Ma'am, Yes sir and No sir. Oh, and yes, college football is the greatest thing ever. :D

I agree with the first, but decline the second. I'm from Mississippi, and American football doesn't tickle my fancy in the least.

On another note, is Virginia usually considered to be northern? I always thought of it as being southern.

Virginia is considered part of the Upper South.

Sweet iced tea is wretched, hot tea is where it is at.
