Got me sounds like the waitress just had a bug up her proverbial butt that needed some dislodging. Took Tae-Kwon-Do lessons and the first rule we learned was to address the instructor as well as fellow students as either sir or maam as a sign of respect. It was a quick "yes maam" or "yes sir" when addressing one another and I kind of carried that on with me even though I stopped classes.

One thing that is funny yet kind of cool is when you say maam or sir to the elderly folks near me. They'll kind of light up all happy saying they're glad to see someone with manners in this day and age.

OT: In all honesty, I think the biggest differences between the North and the South pertain to food. Go try and find some home made sweet tea in New York. I dare you.

So true...I moved to New York a little over a year ago, and I still ask if they have sweet tea when I go to a new restaurant, even though I should know better.

I do that unless I know what brands there are and I want something specific, then I'll say sprite or pepsi, or whatever. Soda and pop annoy me. :P

Lemonade, cola, pub squash, ginger beer, sarsaparilla. Or soft drink, if you feel like a lucky dip.

Other countries have a North and a South, shocking...

Lots of planets have a north.

Interestingly, the North/South divide in England is the other way around than in the US. Over here, the south is the civilized bit.

Australia is the same. Sort of. Queensland kinda fits, as do some parts of Western Australia. Darwin, from what I hear, is a bit wild-west-ish (except it's a coastal city in the Northern Territories...). Meanwhile the south gets pretty cold and in winter, and hot in summer (in Melbourne you can just about get both in the same day :P).

Okay, okay, so maybe Aus is completely different :hehe:.

Lots of planets have a north.

Presumably they would also have a south though I'd guess deciding which is which is the real challenge.

Well people don't really walk around saying "Gimme some pop." Or "I want a sodapop!" They say "Gimme a soda." or "I want a soda!"....

I didn't know commonplace etiquette was so confusing around here..

"Gee me a drink"
"Toss is a Irn-Bru" (Or other drink)
Is the common way of asking for a drink around my part when talking to friends/family.

While complaining about southerners just because they have such unneeded luxuries like an inside toilet and running water, as well.

Interestingly, the North/South divide in England is the other way around than in the US. Over here, the south is the civilized bit.

That's because in America, big cities like Chicago, Seattle, New York, etc. are in the North and not many of the same in the South.

Whereas in England (well, the UK in general) the big cities like London are in the South and there aren't many big cities in the North.

American culture is amazing. An employee can snap at a paying customer for such trivial matters. In Finland, it would get you fired on the spot. Out here beyond the wolf border, all you can do is smile like an idiot and take it like a (wo)man. Snapping at a customer will get you fired, or at least warned and assigned to other duties.

Thats pretty much the same here in Scotland, that said someone needs to catch them or you need to tell the manager. Usually resulting in some sort of bonus discount or free food :)

Liverpool and Manchester aren't cities. They're shanty towns. Also more people should visit Norwich, its a lovely city.

Glasgow has one of the biggest populations in the UK, not the highest but within the top 5, its the biggest city North of the border and Leeds which is in North England has on of the highest populations in the whould country, 3rd overall I think with London and Birmingham being 1st and 2nd and in the South.

You don't see people running around saying "I wanna vacation in Manchester! :D <333" you hear them say "Let's go to London! :D <333".....

Thats because London is the biggest city while also housing some of the biggest names in the UK and being somewhat of a stylish iconic place

Other than London I would argue that Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh are bigger/culturally more important than anywhere down south (aside from Birmingham).

And yeah, people do go on holiday to London. Personally, you can just lock yourself in a Portaloo for several days and it'd have the same effect, and save you a few quid as well.

True, but you don't get it in London either. You get some undercooked avant garde french [censored].

You don't know how many issues I have with what you just said.

1) The French do steaks better than anyone else, so your argument falls at the first hurdle.

2) I thought you northern monkeys prided yourselves with being 'hard', yet you don't like undercooked steak? This ponce from a middle class southern family likes tougher food than you. Your reputation is failing.

3) I had avant-garde steak once before, and it involved being hung upside down, naked but for a loincloth made of calf skin and hand fed to me by a myriad collection of eunuchs, Nubian courtesans and dwarfs. I went blind for three months, and when I regained sight, I only saw in red. So yeah, it was better than normal

And I thought the zone warfare was bad in America.:lmao:

Also, I like my steak with a good bit of blood left, though not so much that the whole thing is pink.

It's amazing how culturally divided one tiny island in the North Sea can be. . .

I can say with conviction that in the US the "South" begins when you see your first Waffle House. Somewhere around Maryland - or thereabouts.

"Ma'am" isn't insulting in and of itself; it's all in how you say it. ;)

I can't see why, it's such a dump. If I had the money, I'd like to immigrate to the northern part of England, there's nothing in the South I'd want to live by.

Every country is divided and each region will argue about which is better, really it's a trivial matter.
