Well it depends on the individual. As a serious roleplayer I would greatly welcome it, indeed I have already answered all of those questions for myself and my own character and it would be great for him to actually be apart of a bigger world.

I would agree, but I fear the whole thing is doomed to failure in the long run, as more people would prefer to just mine and build stuff, whilst whining if they happen to get killed.

I think that for the RP map we should have some sort of overarching narrative to help us along. Why are we here? What are our goals as a society? What are our goals as individuals? What were we doing before we got to the new map? Do we have any fears? Do we have religion? That sort of thing. If we answer questions like those we would probably be able to rp more convincingly and more naturally.
Tell me what you guys think.

Have people determined whether they want Aztec, Victorian, or some other style of architecture, or whether they want any style constraints at all? I think that would be a logical first step in determining a basic narrative.

For instance, here's one for a Victorian theme:

"All around you, the people are sick. Smog from new industrial machines fills the air, and the government rules over the people with an iron fist. People know, though, that the government is but a puppet for BlockCorps. The corporation has fingers in everything - it is, in essence, monopolizing the entire island country of Cubania, and the people suffer under their regime. One of their latest machines is a sea vessel, rumored to be capable of visiting distant lands untouched by civilization, lands that grow verdant and unspoiled by industry.

"Little does BlockCorps know that a small group of rebels has plans to destroy the ship building yard and set off on the prototype vessel... Determined to leave the sickness behind, these few souls are set to embark to parts unknown, where they will build their own destiny, working together with a common goal. Survive. And, for perhaps the first time since BlockCorps came to be, prosper."

There are a lot more people interested in roleplaying than you would think. Just look at the addition of Vampirism, we had a Vampire Hunter Order, an independent priest, the Coven and a few people caught up in it all. It all ended up being a lot of fun as a result. A narrative and a set of goals would go a long way to helping people do something similar again. The whole Vampirism crisis didn't last very long because people realized Vampirism wasn't all that great, an overarching narrative would last much longer.
Building on what Mr E said, we could have the rebels trying to locate the ship so they can escape whilst the corporation backed guards attempt to track down the rebels. When (or if) the rebels escape they could build a new home wherever they land , only to find that the corporations have tracked them and are setting up a rival colony to drive them away.
Hopefully this could go on for some time and would evolve and develop naturally as a story. If we made it exciting enough and incorporated the building/mining aspects of Minecraft into it I imagine it would be popular even with people who don't roleplay that much.

Well then we would all have to find some way for our characters and such to mesh together. I mean I know I wouldn't want to comprimise much on my character - which is pretty much the same as what he is currently.

My idea was that we are pertty much an emerging people after a global holocaust - possibly magic, Enderman or Creeper related and the whole world was pretty much rebuilding - which is why NPC Villages are just that, villages. I was going to go aorund the next map as a pilgrim looking for Holy Records and building small ruins from the last civlisations as I went along.

I guess with a more unified narative I'd have to be something else, but I'm not too bothered as long as I can keep some aspects. A religious man who is the caretaker of a dead city essentially.

It was just an example. We could have something completely different and a bit more magical if that worked better.

N, what I mean is that we will all have something that we want and it might get a little messy ensuring that everbody who is taking part at least gets some say.

apparently the host for the server i was talking about is go daddy... idk if thats the same as from those stupid commercials or not but apprently they host mc servers as well.

That's just domain name registration. Whoever runs the server is probably self-hosting, and using a domain name for ease of use.

It shouldn't be too hard to make everybody's characters fit together. We only have a few people with rp ideas already. The only problems i can think of is how to explain some of the more exotic skins people have. How exactly could we make a stormtrooper fit into a fantasy setting? Or a knight fit into a victorian setting?

This is just an idea btw. I can accept that it might not be possible but I think it would enrich our next map

What do you guys think of this: http://www.veloxservers.com/?page_id=4943

Should I get one of them, like the silver one, invite EVERYONE I can to max it out and test its limits? If it can perform, then I know that the highest one can perform.

Now these are VPS servers. Its a little different from a hardware server like we have now. Its hard to explain (for me), look up OpenVZ and Xen VPS.

Also, this same company is releasing dedicated (hardware) servers this week. If their VPS pricing plan is of any indication, they're dedicated servers might be dirt cheap as well.

Lets keep our fingers crossed.

(snip)

If you're getting performance issues on your current server, it makes sense to try a change. A virtual server it may be, but it advertises more than double the RAM (even though says it can handle roughly the same number of players, and even though the RAM operates differently) at half the price. To me, that sounds like it should be greater (or equal) performance and better price-point sustainability for the small Beth group. Given those boons, the other compromises you make by going the VPS route shouldn't be too bad... besides, it does advertise a guaranteed 100Mbps network speed, which should keep things good and fast.

I dare say my gorilla won't fit any setting. :P I didn't realise we were going that far with it.

At least you can build some sort of iron zoo cage. How would I possibly fit in?

We can just ignore the skins. It makes little difference.

I will be my skin. (Batman). I was put on the world to avenge... something. I plan on doing this by grinding for hours on end to get my H2H skill up in order to beat criminals to death.

well i asked the owner of the server about that when he said go daddy and he said he rented the physical server from "go daddy" so i figure he just pays for the use of the server and does all the maintanance himself.

any ways... i think I found where legogod has been hanging about

EDIT: damn, ninja'd... lego, do you just troll the internet for any news or videos about legos?

EDIT2: also for the rp map i can keep a calender for rp reasons, or if we would rather assume that date be based on the current age of the server i can easily figure out to the day how old (in mc years) the rp world is.

Out of curiousity, have people just lost interest in the map as much as I have? Everytime I log on, there's no one on, and that goes on for hours at a time.
