I think it'd be cool if we did some kind of Egyptian-architecture themed city in the desert. We need some variety in our spawn cities. But of course if Bone wants to go with his world tree city idea (which would also be cool), that wouldn't exactly work.

I'd like that too.

I think the problem with small houses is that it's very hard to make them anything but boxy. There's a minimum amount of space you need for decorative effects before it gets cramped very quickly.

themes:

(By Aldgate Standards)

Purchase Protected Land: Build to your style

Bandit Heathens: Build what you want.

I am currently comparing servers. I will eventually (before the bill date) refund the server monies and use them to open a new server.

FOR INSTANCE:

We COULD get this:

? No Branding
? Dedicated IP
? Automatic Setup
? Free MySQL Database
? TCAdmin Control Panel
? Automatic Mod Installer
? Clan Pay Donation system
? Full FTP and File Manager Access

4GB of Ram for $45

or this:

3.6GB Dedicated RAM.
5GB Burst RAM.
SolusVM VPS Management Panel.
Dedicated IP - No typing ports.
100Mbit/s Uplink speed.
RAMDisk Powered.
Fully Managed - Free Mod & Plugin installation.
Includes Root & FTP Access.

For $38.95 (the highest is preferred at $51.95 but they don't have any available. There is only 1 of these left too)

Unlimited HDD Storage
4gb RAM
Free Web Hosting
Free Web Package (Soon)
Dedicated IP
Free MYSQL DB

for $40.99

Still shopping though. I'm leaning toward the middle one.

What about aztec? I'm not an expert on Egyptian architecture but sandstone would be really dominant as a building material and would get old fast. With aztec architecture you can all kinds of colours, different forms of stone and it goes well with Minecraft's blockiness.

Sounds good to me. I don't know much about Egyptian architecture either. I was just thinking of some kind of desert city, and the more materials we could use, the better.

I'm very much in favour of more colourful towns. Not just wood and stone.

An Egyptian city gets boring an lame. They have beautiful interiors but crap exterior. Trust me, I rage quit my Egyptian map. Without an unlimited (spawned) supply of sand and sandstone we'd run out of desert or have those horrible holes everywhere.
Anyone like a modern/cityish/1984 theme?

That's certainly a nod in favor of (1) two towns, (2) a split personality town, or (3) rampant banditry. People do like having choices.

Personally, I like both, but I'd be more keen on trying a modern theme if I were to join the server right now... I suppose that last bit's important, in my case.

I say do option 2... Carry forth the excellent "Mojang as Shivering Isles" anology.

We could have memory holes and propaganda everywhere.

For a city theme what time period are we leaning towards?

Victorian would be the safest option. It's practical, it's not too exotic, it's pretty flexible and it's easy to have varied architecture without anything looking out of place.

I just had an interesting thought, what if the next map, the Empire starts off in an NPC town (assuming there's an NPC town seed), and from there, it builds and expands? In the past it seems the major towns were made out of spawned goods, but for it to be a true RP, it should be built by hand and out of what has been found, it'd reflect the Empires wealth.

Also, is there any chance of changing the 'no holds bar griefing outside city' attitude Bone? I know it's RP and all, but some of us take joy in just being a tranquil farmer.

Edit: To clarify 'griefing'. To use our map as an example. The Vampires declare war on Sky and his stronghold (Back in the Vamp RP) they use TNT to blow open the wall. That's one thing, but to have a bunch of jerks griefing homes to cause trouble and malady for users is just frustrating.

even tranquil farmers sometimes get robbed and beaten. You could always make your farm part of the city.

True, but thats not what I meant. I think the best way to say this is, it's one thing to do damage with intent, but just randomly burning down or bombing a house soley for chaos purpose is really uncalled for. I dont mind non locketted chests (Though I do want to know if I make a bank I could have locketted vaults too, otherwise theres no use in it if only your bank is the 100% robbery proof vault.

On a side note, http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff366/LadyLollerskates/TerpyIsABabe.jpg could totally be a supermodel.

The city bank will be the only area where lockette will be applied until we get a mod that allows for lockpicking with pickbreak on failure. The chaos worked very well during the Aldgate days but I have placed new rules in place. May I direct you to my earlier post on the rules? It is on page 2.

- Griefing and Stealing can only take place when the victim is currently online.

(When pickbreak on failure is added, Stealing can take place at any time)

People http://z15.invisionfree.com/BGSF_Minecraft/index.php?showtopic=8 for an Aldgate style map, these are Aldgate style rules.

To fit in with my aspect of the RP I'm going to spend a lot of time wandering as a pilgrim until I find a dungeon and a record - on my way around though I'm going to periodically build /small/ ruins like the ones I do now of mostly cobble; they'll be like NPC Villages, only mostly ruined. It's to fit in with my whole worship of some previous civilisation thing.

Sadly, my World Tree isn't anywhere near as glorious as that. Though we could always expand it to show Imperial Prestige.... hmmmmm

After playing around in creative mode I have come to the conclusion that I cannot build Victorian buildings. I think I'll have to practice a bit if we end up going for a Victorian city.

I'd go with that. Something 17th-19th century would be good.

We could build horrible terraces for the poor to live in. :P

Pfft. If my neighbours would break into my room while I'm sleeping to put a blanket on me I wouldn't be thankful, I'd be totally creeped out.

I still don't trust 'em. The endermen, and my neighbours. :shifty:
