Update 1.6 has mounted combat! Thread #2

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:23 pm

Two details make this meaningless to me.

One, when the horse charges at someone, it does no damage.

Two, there are no pole arms.

Good for you, but you can acknowledge that they are supporting the game with free content months after release, even if it does not directly appeal to you?

For example, i have no interest in Kinect but thought it was cool they added compatibility into the game.

So now I finally have a reason to equip all these spears? Oh wait...

Tried it out for a few hours this morning, and it's pretty neat. It really changes how I feel about horses, obviously - before they were strictly for RP purposes. Now, they have a little bit of usefulness.

My biggest complaint is that we're still forced into 3rd person cam on horseback, which for me makes aiming and controlling very awkward. Mounted archery in particular is difficult. I play exclusively in 1st person, so this is rather jarring. It was already jarring when all I had to do was steer the horse; now I have to steer and aim/swing.

I miss a lot.

But maybe I'll get used to it. At least this means I don't have to dismount to fight wolves, or avoid them altogether and miss the xp from killing them.

Oh, and using a 2-handed sword from horseback looks badass! You only swing it with your right hand. When you're dual-wielding, you only use your right hand, too; the left hand just rests on the pommel.

Hopefully they'll implement a 1st person cam for horseback, and then get to spears.

Really? Displaying multiple weapons on a character is pretty unnecessary... hell it doesn't effect game play at all.. " I ar want t2 l00k laek n1nja mast4r "

I think he was joking.

I'm actually extremely pleased right now (maybe because I'm using a gamepad? idk)

somehow I feel most of the people complaining though are console owners, who aren't going to be able to get the patch anytime in the (relatively) close future anyway  . for an example, check out the IGN youtube video which references this patch. it's full of resentful Xbox 360/PS3 [censored] commenting on how Bethesda is concentrating "too much" on PC.

edit - here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEyDz38yGYI&feature=g-all-u (check the comments section, good for a laugh).

That's crazy. Everyone knows PC always get the betas and get to play with things like this first. Not so long ago they introduced Kinect voice commands and it was bitter PC/PS3 gamers complaining that too much focus was on the Xbox... Beth can't win. I'm on the Xbox and am just happy that you guys are getting the beta... it means I'll get it at some point in time. I can wait.

Yeah but it's still in beta, I'm sure it will be tweaked for the finished version.

I don't think charge damage is totally necessary. A chance for knockdown or stun (with knockback) would be adequate and realistic. Trampling however...

I was very excited when I saw the announcement, it's great that Bethesda are adding new features and expanding on what you can do as a character. However, does anyone else run into problems when changing weapons on horseback? Every time I do, via hotkeys or inventory, my character ends up standing on the horse's back and all contol keys except map and inventory are frozen. I appreciate that its only a beta, but I haven't seen anyone else with this prob judging by the demos on youtube. Any ideas?

I'm still amazed that people can be unhappy about this... Especially those saying "I wish they'd do this instead."
It's not that I'm unhappy about it, but I just don't see a need for it. Now, to be fair, I'm only a third into the main quest, so perhaps there's something on the horizon which calls for it. If I get there, and the patch is out before I arrive, then I'll definitely be appreciative of it.

Provided my horse can get to it in a timely manner, that is.

I don't wish to sound negative over the option, at all, but players starting out, who dropped gold on a horse, find themselves... disappointed.

I can't mod a console game to speed my horse up. :(

I see an absolute need. One of the reasons I stopped using my horse for my fighter/paladin was because it was annoying always having to dismount to kill the wolves/bears/bandits attacking me at random. My solution was to stop using the horse, not to complain about it... but it was kind of sad to have to resort to such a drastic workaround.

Seems like a pretty unnecessary feature. Would prefer they work on displaying multiple weapons on a character at one time.

See, I can do it too.

Yeah, having to dismount from your horse while a dragon breathes fire on you wasn't a major inconvinience or anything.

Heck with mounted combat, dragon fight #56089 might actually be fun

I'm amazed people are actually complaining about this.

Would he seriously prefer an asthetic feature over a gameplay one? Even when it's handed to him? D:

It just self-entitlement.

Bethesda is doing something genuinely impressive (improving the game post-release for free) and he's complaning that it's not the feature he wants. Lots of that going on around here.

Hopefully polearms, crossbows, and dynamic water shaders make their way into the game later on. The game-jam stuff all looked really good and if people keep this complaining up we might not see any of it.

Yes, if we keep this complaining up, Bethesda is going to turn around this car right now, so help me!

I think the complaining is silly, too, but I really doubt they have such thin skin as to actually halt production because of a couple of whiners.

I think Steam just needs to track your posts on this forum, and if you complain it freezes the game on your account, so you just don't get any more updates. We'll call it, 'Simulating what other companies do with their games'.

Yup, because censorship is fun! :D

Seriously though, that's a terrible idea, even if said in jest. (Mostly because it's in no way funny, unless your name is O'Brien. And now I wait to see how many people got that reference.) It's an open forum, and haters gonna...wait, wrong meme complainers are gonna complain. Don't like it? Tune them out. They don't seem to have much of a discernible impact on what Bethesda's doing. People complained about free content added in 1.5; they haven't stopped throwing free updates at us.

It's not what they're saying, so much as how they say it. I don't expect people to be happy with what we get and shut up, I just think it's rediculous how Bethesda is so nice to us yet there are people going, "Bethesda you svck implement this instead I hate you blaralfafjlfar!"

"Production" though. That's a term that is synoymous with profit but bethesda is putting this stuff in for free on their own dollar. Doing it for free in a generation of game development that is completely based upon trivial DLC products.

Rather than asking yourself why bethesda is putting stuff in for free, you should ask youself why at least 80% of delvopers don't make post game improvements for free. I'm sure "pointless critical feedback and constant whining" would be pretty high on the list for not doing that.

Can there be less griping about "complaints" ? yeah I see the lolness of complaining for free content but this is the kind of fuel that fed the fire in 2011 more speculation about what else 1.6 might have would be nice, and less about how people feel about it

People complain. It's what they do. Valve tosses out free content for their games like it was cheap candy, and yet their forums are filled with enough complaining to power a third world country for about a decade. Hasn't changed their business practices any.

Somehow, I think Bethesda's collective ego can handle a bit of internet-based complaining.

Seriously? This the way you look at this? You actually support this kind of .....feel free to finish that with any bad word of your choosing.
