Bethesda has just released a http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1376243-new-beta-update-on-steam-168706/ and it contains mounted combat! I thought I'd post here to let console players know, since this is just really cool!

Video: http://youtu.be/yS2GG2tLh9Y

It's not perfect but it's really fun and an awesome edition to the game!

Again:

Isn't this horrendously imbalanced? I mean from that vid it doesn't look like he's ever being hit.

It's going to be hard on the wallet to keep buying them if they keep dying. Plus you aren't really high up so you can still get wacked but maybe only archers and mages would be at a disadvantage because you are probably moving so less chance of you getting hit.

I noticed too while on Shadowmere. None of us us getting hit, even though I can hear the sound of hits.

I had god mode on and menu's off. I was getting hit plenty. Without godmode you still take a fair amount of damage.

I hadn't played that character lately, but it did seem that I gained a defensive bonus from being on the horse. But again, I can't say for sure.

It may also be bugged, keep in mind that this is a beta.

Well I haven't tried it so I don't know, hence I'm asking.
From the video though, it looks like the guards never swing at him unless he comes to a COMPLETE stop. There's points where he's literally trotting by them while fully surrounded and none of them swing. The archers are also horribly inaccurate when firing on him. The only time he gets hit is when he comes to a complete stop, then a guy get him with his axe.

A confirmation and then one that sounds more like it's imbalanced. Well damn. :P

Yeah but it's still in beta, I'm sure it will be tweaked for the finished version.

Fixed issue with nirnroot lighting not properly cleaning up.

:punches air:
Yes!

Mounted combat is nice and all, but Im really happy about the fix for atomic Nirnroot glow.

Should've been in the game on release. I mean didn't they promise it for oblivion?

Many things in these games are unbalanced, it's your decision whether or not to abuse it or not.

They came out and said they made a concious decision to cut it BECAUSE they couldn't balance it properly: the horserider always had an advantage in combat.
Hence why I press the question of balance now, since that was reportedly always the reason it was never quite implemented.

Ha, came across an NPC on horseback with an imperial walking beside as an escort. I was on horseback and I took a swing at the NPC on his horse and the horse took the full hit. The NPC stopped, got off the horse and then ran away while the horse and imperial attacked me.

Is that not the Cavalry's motto? (this is totally in jest and not meant as a flame)

Mount and blade can do it and that's a pretty indie game. Why can't bethesda do it?

I hope mounts can be ridden in first person as well, otherwise this is useless. I never liked combat in third person, no matter how well done third person was - and in Skyrim it's pretty well done. I just prefer looking through the eyes of my character as I fire an arrow into my enemy's face.

Well if we're gonna be realistic, I believe a common tactic to counter cavalry was spearmen.

No. But you never know, modders may be able to implement it now. Still, the mounted combat is really cool, I ran down a group of guards scattering them and picked off two before they could gather themselves, before galloping off, swinging around and running down the rest.
