Update 1.6 has mounted combat! Thread #2

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 1:35 am

Ha, came across an NPC on horseback with an imperial walking beside as an escort. I was on horseback and I took a swing at the NPC on his horse and the horse took the full hit. The NPC stopped, got off the horse and then ran away while the horse and imperial attacked me.

I hope that this is something they work on between the beta and the final patch release. This is a nice feature, but it would be a great one if Bethesda is able to iron out the remaining issues.

Well if we're gonna be realistic, I believe a common tactic to counter cavalry was spearmen.

HINT [censored]ING HINT
Then maybe we'll get spears too. I hope so..

Yeah x) its not a multiplayer game,Dont need to be that balanced

Not true.

Balance adds depth and replay value. If for example a warrior, thief and mage are all perfectly balanced, then I have the incentive to try all three, learn their unique strengths and weaknesses and play the game completely differently. If a certain style is god-tier though then it sort of cuts down on the reasons given to try anything else. More importantly, being able to reasonably kill an opponent or approach a situation in multiple different ways without much effort (if it's too hard to do with a build, it stops being fun and many give up) then that's essentially more content, since the character handle completely differently.

Fixed issue with nirnroot lighting not properly cleaning up.

:punches air:
Yes!

Mounted combat is nice and all, but Im really happy about the fix for atomic Nirnroot glow.

And * drum roll * ........ Fixed issue where certain creatures and NPCs would fail to respawn properly  no more running out of things to kill

Again:

Isn't this horrendously imbalanced? I mean from that vid it doesn't look like he's ever being hit.

Nope not at all, try going to a giant camp and take on a couple of mammoth and giants if you really feel that way. Dont like it dont use it, this is not a multiplayer game.

It's free so fine. But... meh. Obviously a lot of people dig it and Beth is in the people pleasing business so good on 'em for getting it out there. But it doesn't seem to be anything more than candy. It doesn't add anything to the substance of the game. But then again, the things I'm hoping for likely won't be incorporated into a patch, but a DLC instead. I guess horse armor's next. And I imagine it won't be long before some people will be complaining that they can't make their horse into a unicorn.

I no longer have to gallop past enemies to a 'safe' distance. Stop, get off my horse, draw my weapon and turn around to face the enemy. Meanwhile the enemy has caught up with me and landed some blows or even killed me before I can dismount properly.

That is a pretty major change in gameplay for myself and everyone who rides a horse ingame.

Also, there is a unicorn mod out that allows people to change their horse into a unicorn.

I can confirm being killed while on horseback. However, can't for the love of me figure out why my status bars disappear when I unsheathe my weapon, but then reappear when I sheath it?

Sadly, the mounted combat does not work for me.  I can swing the sword but the moment I do that the horse rears (gets up on his hind legs) and stops. Everytime I swing the horse stops and rears. I also seem to hit myself more than the enemies.
Tried on a new game with no horse mods.

Maybe I'm not doing it right...

I also don't have the HUD anymore once I draw the sword.

Why oh why?...

EDIT: FIXED. Now to see about that HUD.

yeah, seems to be an isolated bug happening to some people.

hopefully it'll be addressed, considering this is what a beta is for.

Well, I for one have completely eschewed the use of horses due to the fact that you can't fight from horseback. If you wanted to fight whilst travelling with a horse, you had to dismount and then fight with your horse either getting in the way or suiciding. If you wanted to avoid fights you may as well have fast travelled.

In fact, outside RP purposes, there was no good reason to own a horse, and even then not being able to swing your sword from horseback could be an immersion breaker.

Now, horses have a point to them, other than to climb up some ridiculously steep slope whilst going LOLOLOL LOOK AT GLUEHOOVES TROLOLOLOOOL

Huh, really - 2-handed weapons are wielded with one hand on horseback? That's kinda neat.

I really really really really REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hope they implement first person view on horseback, though.

I avoided horses precisely because we were forced into 3rd person. Except for RP purposes (very rare), I never use them.

I have gotten a bit more familiar with wrestling with the controls, but there are so many problems and it's so awkward that I can't imagine fighting from horseback in 3rd person will be a very smooth experience.

Please, Bethesda - first person horseback riding! (and werewolves)

I would be more incline to think its mod related since everyone does not seem to be having the issue. I swear I vaguely remember something about a mod that removes the hud when you don't need it. I probably manually installed the thing and its lost somewhere in my data folder.

edit - nope, I don't have immersive hud installed.

^yeah, could be.

if so, it's probably the "Immersive Hud" mod you're referring to.

They came out and said they made a concious decision to cut it BECAUSE they couldn't balance it properly: the horserider always had an advantage in combat.
Hence why I press the question of balance now, since that was reportedly always the reason it was never quite implemented.

Isn't it more realistic that a mounted warrior has the advantage? And when was anything ever well balanced in Oblivion? Guards were immortal. They should've released it then and let the modders try their hand at it...probably would have been smoothed out long ago...yet they released a horse armour DLC, which I got about 2 hours use of, before retiring it permanently.

Yep, the beta patch messes up SKSE and Script Dragon, so Immersive Hud doesn't work. I had to disable some mods before I could try it out.
Also, mounted combat is incredibly clunky for me. Maybe it would be better on a gamepad? The lack of horse backpedaling makes it kinda tedious.

Same here, but I appreciate Bethesda reacting to customer input.

are you serious?

does it at all impede on the SkyUI system?

and yeah, a gamepad seems like the most obvious route to go with this patch.

It does. I had to disable SkyUI to try it out
I mean, SkyUI shows up, but it comes up with the SKSE error message. I'll probably just disable the beta until the new versions of SKSE and Script Dragon are out.
