Walking Dead series, continued

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 4:30 am

(hopefully no one made this already, I looked a few pages back & didn't see one...if there is, close/link away)

...so tonight's episode. Still slow, building more upon characters. But I do love Scott Wilson (Hershel) and the ending made for a "hmmm" moment...wouldn't want to be in her situation during a zombie apocalypse.
Then later while watching 'Hells on Wheels' premiere, they played a scene from next weeks episode and I was "Nooooo...please be ok Daryl." :)

There was already a thread, but it's locked so I think this is fine.

(also, make sure you use spoiler tags)

I'm disappointed I watched the preview for next weeks episode...
Spoiler
I knew mearl(Darryls brother) was probably going to pop up eventually, but now I'm going to have to wait a week to see what's up with him....

That's my boy Glenn,

Spoiler
getting supplies and tappin dat azz..... :disguise:

Always killin it. Still I'd like to see the show give him more screen time.

Two more episodes and I suspect Rick is gonna lose his marbles. He is not looking well and being the "leader" seems to be wearing on his mental stability.

Spoiler
And just wait till Rick finds out she's preggers with quite possibly, shane's kid. Oh boy.

Does anyone like Rick's wife? I sure don't.

Really wish there were some better female characters. All we get is the suicidal blonde, Rick's [censored]ty wife, and the whimpering mom. I'll like the cow girl, at least she's a stronger female presence.

And the talking dead show? Pray you don't randomly flip to this channel before watching the episode, 25 seconds can spoiler a whole episode.

I had no idea that was going to happen to Glenn. Missed what Rick asked the Doc that seemed important but I was switching back and fourth between the show and the Steelers game....which they lost =(

Not a lot happened action wise but I really liked this episode.

Hhhm, let me see if I can recall all the points I wanted make while I was soaking in the tub.

I too am finding this all a bit slow this season. They are dragging things out too long, for me. I'm losing interest in their "struggle".

What was the point of the "water walker" scenes?
Spoiler
Did they not say they had 5 wells? With this well in particular not being the one that fed the house, the more important well! Why risk anyone's life.......all for not? They still "pooped in their own backyard" after it was all said and done. Even if they got it out intact, would you drink zombie tea water? I sure as hell wouldn't, even boiled!!!
The point of them? Time filler, nothing else. It added nothing to the story.

Why do they keep telling the kid to sleep/rest right after he wakes up from hours of unconsciousness/being in a coma? Not like he was trying to jump out of bed to run a marathon or or anything. Maybe he's hungry? Not tired perhaps? (Kinda nit picky but still!!)

Why did Otis's widow ask Shane to fill her in on the details of his last moments? Do you really want the details of him being captured, then ripped apart and eaten alive? Really? Just more unnecessary time filler in my view.

Who didn't see
Spoiler
Lori being pregnant coming long ago?

And yes, I too think she is a witch of a character. I really don't like her!

Daryl is the best character of them all. I like him! Bigoted as he was.

Finally:

FIND THE DAMN GIRL AND MOVE ON!!!!!

Anyone notice Daryls brother in the preview to the next episode? This should get intersting quick.

After watching this latest episode I'm no longer thinking Shane was a **** for doing what he did. It had to be done imo.

This season is moving so freaking slow I just want to punch the Carl in the face. Sophia, you're slowing down the story, please shamble your zombie self towards the group and get shot. If you're not a zombie already, get found. A week of waiting for the same [censored] as the past three.

Honestly I might stop watching this show. The whole love triangle thing is getting to be too much. Especially with what happened at the end of the show, which I knew was coming as soon as she asked for a special pick up from the store.

Less soap opera, more zombie-apocalypse-survival please.

I mean, a lot of the episodes have like 1-2 minutes of zombie screen time in them.. pretty odd for a show called "The Walking Dead".

Yeah seriously. They're really dragging the story out and trying to milk some ratings... wonder if it'll backfire.

Yeah the whole Sophia thing is getting really old. I really hope the 5th episode really picks up at a much faster pace than the 4th one.

Pretty much got the same thoughts, They seem to be dragging things out a little bit.

Though, i think next episode they will make a bit of progress with sophia due to

Spoiler

When darrels in the house, its obvious theres been someone living/camping out there, due to the blankets in the cupboard and the empty food can. Only a small person could fit in that cupboard.
Suppose they could get another 2 episodes exploring the house

Why did he not mention it to the mother or anyone else though?

Also, could anyone tell me whats going on with
Spoiler
Meryl
in the preview, i never got to see it.
edit- Nevermind, seems there wasnt alot shown

It's funny, after the second episode of the season I said I'd stop watching if
Spoiler
it turned out that Lori was pregnant with Shane's baby.

I'll probably still keep watching anyway, but I'm not happy about the inter-personal drama hogging the spotlight so far. They really need to crank the tension back up or I'm going to forget there's a zombie apocalypse going on.

This.

I really hope they dont [spoiler] get to stay at the ranch, or i hope the water supply is contaminated and they need to move. Really not gonna be too interesting if there just camping there and running about the woods look for sophia. [/spoler]

I find your comments quite interesting.

As someone who's read the graphics novels religiously I always knew the story was less about post apocalyptic survival, and more about group dynamics when the [censored] hits the fan. There are entire novels in the series in which zombies don't even appear. It's about how the group are coping with the threat of death (even when it's not apparant) and with the threat of each other going entirely batty. Their changing mental attitudes are the biggest recurring theme in the novels, I'd say very little is actually dedicated to survival.

And because I knew
Spoiler
Lori would be pregnant with Shanes baby
as per the novels, that was never going to be a surprise.

I'd be curious to find out how many people who are losing interest read the books, as opposed to those who didn't and knew what direction the series would take?

I've not read the books and I've only seen one episode of the show (this latest one), but I was actually quite pleased that the zombies didn't play much of a role. I think a zombie series could be more interesting when focusing on the characters instead of the zombies.

A series comprised of nonstop zombie attacks would get boring quickly. Like everything after minute 36 in every zombie flick ever made.

On the other hand, using zombies as a mechanism for tension and conflict among a group of people trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world is what good stories are made of. Whether The Walking Dead is succeeding at that remains too be seen (I agree it is slowing down a little bit too much), but so far I am into it.

Don't get me wrong, I like zombies. I am fascinated by them. It is just that their appeal lies more in the commentary on society and ramifications on our future if they existed rather than the thrill of watching their heads explode or watching them chow down on some flesh.

Emz, I just started reading the comics actually. So far, so good, though I've seen all of this already in the show (I'm on issue 4) ...

Who knows, maybe the story is just that way, but I really don't like the way the show is turning into a Days of our lives type show with an added "Oh yeah, there are zombies in the background too guys!" element.

edit: I totally agree the show would get boring very quickly if it were nothing but zombies, but so far this season it has basically been nothing but "Where's that stupid girl who didn't listen to us TWICE?" and cheesy love/lust/love triangle scenes, which to a lot of viewers is getting very boring.

Spoiler
I honestly laughed out loud, when the farmer's daughter said "I want to have six"(OR something along those lines).

Just out of nowhere.

Also that bloated zombie, great make-up

The shows still got me interested but it needs to pick up the pace. I'm not one for having to much action but they have to much "touchy feely" and not enough "Eaty shooty"

Can't have too much of one thing.

I agree completely. However, the backdrop of the constant threat is what drives the character drama. This season, to me, has taken a very large and somewhat sudden departure from the first season. Good disaster stories should be good because of the effect it has on the characters, but so far they've dragged the same handful of conflicts out across half the season with very little background tension and only a couple of interesting incidents. Again, I 100% agree that the zombies are not the "stars" of a good zombie story, but how long can it go with so little happening. It would be different if the drama had some variety and/or was less predictable, but by now I'm tired of the same conflicts about the kids, who's allowed to carry guns, and now
Spoiler
an inconvenient pregnancy that I saw coming from a mile away and was really hoping wouldn't actually happen.
Some non-survival drama is fine, but they need to dilute it with some tension and/or suspense or they're going to lose a lot of people.

That was another thing I wanted to mention forgot. Yeah! Why didn't he mention it to anyone??? It would give the mother some hope at least...though....maybe that's the problem, but we all know she's alive and will return, seeing this show is pretty predictable, mostly. The whole child aspect of the series is not really up my ally. Not sure why, but the child scenes just bug me now.

I'd be curious to find out how many people who are losing interest read the books, as opposed to those who didn't and knew what direction the series would take?

I've only seen the TV series.

I also agree too much zombie action would ruin it, but the opposite also rings true! I'm all for personal relationship building/character build up but damn, it's all they've really done this season. Again, with somewhat predictable storyline/plot twists.

It's just such a let down compared to season 1.

I saw the first two episodes (season 1) not too long ago, in Norway we're behind the US with about a year or so usually, it's really annoying. I've just seen the first season of V, the second season isn't available yet. As for Walking Dead, I was pleasently surprised. I don't usually watch zombie survival horror, because it's pretty boring and predictable. But right now it was refreshing to watch a TV series, plus it's not too over-the-top. The pace is slow and certain, not just a silly gorefest.

I agree, for sure. Like I said, I only caught one episode of the show last night by chance, so I can't really say how slow the show is going and whatnot.

Re:slow pace
I mentioned in the 1st thread that I do realize the show can't be a constant 'kapow' zombie-action fest...but imo it does need a balance between character building & action, or it does end up becoming a dramatic soap-opera. The Sophia thing has dragged on and on through multiple episodes now, definitely too long...for TV. What works well in a book/graphic novel doesn't always work well in a TV series and all of that, especially to non-book fans. It's reminding me of the series Jericho, which started off entertaining and then quickly fell flat for much the same reasons...just hard to sustain an attention-keeping series pace (without becoming over the top ridiculous) when the "big event" happens early I guess.

I haven't read the books, but I have read about them somewhat, so I do know the basic gist of what's going on & where it may be headed - not details of who/what, but general concepts. I tried to read the graphic novel once but I'm not really into those so I didn't get far.

I don't usually watch zombie survival horror, because it's pretty boring and predictable.

That's because most zombie movies are written as gore-fests rather than adapted from books, which have to rely on substance to be interesting since they can't actually use visual shock value.

FWIW, I didn't find V to be worth watching. I gave it a chance (watched every episode so far), and found it to be horrendously contrived. Just my opinion, though.

Just finished watching episode 4 of the second season.

Spoiler
When Daryl found the little blanket in the cupboard, doesn't that mean he found Sophia? Shouldn't he have just waited around till she showed up? Apart from that, I really wonder if Lori's baby is Shane's or Rick's. Oh yeah and, Glenn is the luckiest bastard in the (post-apocalyptic) world. ;)

Can't wait to watch the next episode!
