Wasteland 2 Kickstarter (Now featuring Chris Avellone)

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 5:47 pm

Funding just ended, with a grand total of $3,040,669 (including Paypal), only about $400k short of what Double Fine achieved. That is a serious chunk of cash.

*Sigh* About a year and half away now before we can enjoy what we funded.

Now it's time to fund Shadowrun Returns more:)

Fallout 2? Screw that! Planescape Torment? Screw that! Fallout New Vegas? Screw that! I like my games herp'd and derp'd! That's why I choose Todd Howard brand gaming. Comes complete with pail to place over your head while derping!

Actually, according to Avellone himself he was brought on to New Vegas fairly late and apparently had relatively little involvement. He mainly did the DLCs. The others are still true, though. Personally I've loved pretty much all the Obsidian games I've played (KOTOR II, Alpha Protocol, New Vegas+DLC), as well as the two aforementioned Black Isle games (haven't played any of his later Interplay ones, though, eg BG: Dark Alliance etc), so the promise of him teaming up with Brian Fargo was really what convinced me to pledge (that, and I'm a svcker for post-apocalypse settings and fancy collector's edition stuff, both of which the $150 tier had in plentiful supply).

Well he wrote Cass's script (my favorite companion) at least and I'm sure he did more than a little creative help in other places too.

Have you ever played Fallout? Or any turn-based RPG? What a strange reason to pledge.

Well to be frank, Avellone and Obsidian were the main reason I pledged as well. The first Fallout still stands as one of my favourite games (the original Wasteland, as well as most of Interplay's pre-Fallout games, were rather before my time unfortunately), but besides Brian inXile doesn't have much of a pedigree (ie, no other big names from back in the day), and so far they haven't exactly had an amazing track record: their best reviewed game was the Bard's Tale remake which came out back in 2004. Since then they haven't really had any strong releases, just a bunch of small games and Hunted: The Demon's Forge, which had, let's say, mixed reviews. Obsidian, on the other hand, have had an almost consistently excellent track record, with plenty of large, complex RPGs under their belt, a pedigree which is basically just Black Isle with one or two people missing, and have been touted as the replacement Bioware, now that BW seem to have gone to the dark side.

Played fallout 1/2 didnt get far in 1 (I just gave up, dont like being timed) and only got past the temple in fallout 2 once, then I was unable to enter towns on the map, so wandered until aliens killed me... Missing 6 times n a row against a scorpion and seeing a melee focused character die in the temple becuase of that... Game wasnt for me, maybe I should try again. But I do love Obsidians writing. I havent played the games, but I still know about the lore.

Played fallout new vegas, I absolutely love it. I am still playing it, sorting out some character builds now all dlc is out. I was actually pissed when I found they didnt get a bonus (one [censored] point), and NV gets a bad rep for bugs, which was the publishers (Bethesda) job. That just made me want to help them more, becuase Obsidian always gets screwed over.

Played Alpha protocol and I loved that too, it got lots of hate but I think its undeserved. One of the best rpgs I have played imo, and im sad its not getting a sequal.

I dont really play games much anymore (only playing NV while my VN is in the mail) so even if wasteland 2 interested me (I dont really care about it), I probably wont play it much, if I do at all. Im just helping out devs I like.

I loved Alpha Protocol. It was a good game. I played it way after it came out without knowing much about it. After I beat it I thought it was a good game, I checked the metacritic and it got terrible reviews. Apparently I don't have the same taste as most people.

How long ago did you try? Unless it was shortly after it came out, the latest official version (1.1) effectively removed the time limit.

No, it was recently (around a year ago). How has the time limit been removed ? I still saw some sort of countdown.

Good Old Games version? I noticed that too. Hence why I also gave up. Don't like time limits.

I only first played it not that long ago too, so I don't know how it was presented in the early versions, but the default time limit is 500 in-game days. Version 1.1 extended it all the way to 13 years, giving you pretty much as much time as you could need.

The water chip countdown is still there, but the countdown after that was extended to 13 years. The waterchip countdown gives you plenty of time unless your messing around too much. It can even be extended.

I don't know, I'm running through Fallout 1 and it's telling me I've only got 127 days to find the chip; version 1.2. I'm only level 4 and still can't seem to get anything accomplished. I've still got the same 18mm pistol I took a loan out to buy a shotgun. But I still get my ass handed tk me. I tried to fight the Deathclaw but he laughs at me and eats my head.

why are you trying to fight a deathclaw at level 4?

It shouldnt be to hard for you to find a water chip; you already know that there are water chips in vaults so you just need to find out where there are vaults and go check them out. Its just a matter of talking to people who might know where vaults are, perhaps there is someone with some old world knowledge who might be able to advise you where to look. Maybe someone who knows about water might be able to help?

I don't know why I'm trying to fight a Deathclaw at level 4. I talked to Harold and he told me where it was, then the crazy dude took me there. I'm kind of weak. I've been trying to steal stuff to sell because none of the shelves seem to have stuff to sell. I sold my knife for ammo for the 18mm pistol. Its been so long since I've actually sat down to play this game that I don't really remember what to do. All I know if I get my ass handed to me a lot. I'm just meandering around with Ian trying to get better stuff to go get the water chip.

Besides, if I get the water chip early and bring it back to my vault doesn't the game end? Like I said, its been a real long time since I've played it that I don't remember anything.

Ha! I'm replaying Fallout and happened to pass by The Hub quite recently. Have you tried helping Irwin? You'll reap rich rewards, that should help you eliminate the deathclaw. By the way, about your team

Spoiler
How come you haven't recruited Tycho? Or Dogmeat?

Besides, if I get the water chip early and bring it back to my vault doesn't the game end?

Spoiler
Nope.

I have the iguana on a stick for Dogmeat and I haven't run into Tycho. I only ran into Ian. I've been to the hub but haven't done anything there yet. And since the game doesn't end I'll go get me the water chip.

I mean, MCA is great and everything but to pledge money just because of him? I'd think "turn-based and isometric" would be one's first concern after "Oooh, Wasteland! I loved that game!"

Im just helping out devs I like.

Well thats- wow. Would that there were more people like you out there. Cheers.

I loved Alpha Protocol. It was a good game.

I never understood the hate myself. I had a great time with that game. Not the BEST time, but a great time nonetheless. Only had one game-breaking bug but a reload cured it.

why are you trying to fight a deathclaw at level 4?

I lol'ed at that too.

It dosent mean anything, I purchased alpha protocol pre owned (didnt want to risk full price after what I heared about bugs) and despite not caring about wasteland 2, I still chose to have it as a reward, so im still getting something out of it.
Besides I like Obsidian, this may help them out somehow even if their envolvement is small. In the long run thats good for me, I dont play many games now. But if they released a sequal to AP I would pre order it in a heartbeat.
