Weapons, Mods and Ammo Mega-Thread

My question for sawyer would be on energy weapons. How do they work vs armor in fo nv? In fo1-3 you generaly could count on just a laser pistol for a good half the game.. but then you HAD to;/ Has it changed for new vegas?

Laser weapons tend to fire very quickly, very accurately, and do low damage per shot. DT is the bane of laser weapons. But against lightly armored/unarmed targets, they can cut down pretty large groups of enemies at range due to the high accuracy/DPS combo.

Plasma weapons fire much more slowly, have worse (but usually not terrible) accuracy, and do very high damage per shot. Within any given "tier" of weapons, plasma weapons tend to be the most capable of burning through DT.

EDIT: Plasma projectiles have been accelerated greatly in F:NV, moving about twice as fast.

One of my posts on my Unique Weapon thread.
Base Weapon: 9mm Pistol, Unique mod.
Name: Colt .45 Conversion Kit.
Effect: Changes the 9mm Pistol to a .45 Pistol, also changing the skin to that of a Colt M1911, that way we don't have to have two extremely similar looking guns, we just have a mod! Possibly located in a old armory.

Honestly, I think Josh Sawyer is an enthusiastic student of firearm history. He has repeatedly show on these boards a depth of knowledge of firearms operations and history that is well past the casual. He is a fellow gun nut and I believe his efforts in including historic models, proper chamberings, proper animations, etc.. are a result of that enthusiasm and knowledge.

PS (and I also think he's got a man-crush on Browning.)

Proper animations such as reloading a LMG at the speed of a pistol and reloading pistols faster than you can snap, hmm?

You can reload a semi-auto pistol incredibly quickly.

As for the LMG, .357 Magnum Revolver, and the various lever-action rifles, I figured you guys would want weapons to play reloads that didn't take thirty seconds.

Like Josh said would you rather take about a minute re-loading your LMG all while getting chased by Super Muties, Ferals, Legionnaires, and who knows what else in the Wasteland. I'd like my LMG to be fun to use not a pain in the ass and a liability that will probably get me killed. :tops:

Right. They're making a Post Apocalyptic Role Playing Game, not a Post Apocalyptic Survival Simulator (no offense to anyone who suggested this, just giving some context for my opinion). From what I've seen people typically think that the closer a game comes to approaching utter realism the better it'll be (I used to think that also), but most of those same people (including me) don't really like it when they get that kind of realism.

I'm glad to hear the Plasma doesn't fly through the air like molasses anymore as well, To easy for enemies to side-step it or duck. :tops:

Are you guys implementing a system where a certain stat effects the reload speed of a weapon (i.e. Agility)? Or is it static for all players having the same reload speed?

Also have you increased the speed of rockets by any chance as well? I could side step those more easily than I could plasma bolts, which was both hilarious and a bit sad that a raider couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the missile launcher.

Ok sounds good.. But I hope you rebalanced the cost of the ammo and ammo capacity of the laser weapons then. Its bad enough dealing with the fact almost nothing you hunt ever has energy ammo on it but the ammo costs so much more then bullets do and in fallout generaly everything with energy ammo and thus energy weaponry tended to be rather well armored;/

Oh and no pulse weapons then? I was hoping those would make a comeback. Was always fun watching someone disintegrate in fo2;/

Oh and thanks for the reply!

Actually professionals can reload semi-automatic pistols extremely quick. Im sure the speed at which the LMG takes to reload is there for game balancing purposes (lets face it, taking a minute to reload an LMG would really put you in a bad situation if there are still a few enemies left).

I wouldn't mind seeing the Mini-14 in New Vegas. Perhaps it could be a modification of the M1 Garand, sacrificing accuracy for a three round burst. But why does the AC556 have a metal stock? I love the wooden stock on the M1 Garand. It just doesn't fit well with me having a metal stock on that gun.

Well actually the AC556 is the Military/Police Variant so it has a Folding Stock, I'm sure there is one out there with a Wooden Stock as well. :tops:

Maybe there'll be a mod for the Garand looking gun that will make it like http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MCB090-1.html Yes, I know it's not the same gun, and sorry about the link unless you actually want to buy one. I think it would be pretty cool.

Well speaking of the weapon that you linked to is the M1 Carbine and I would love to have that in game! I've been a huge fan of M1 Carbine ever since I watched Band Of Brothers for the first time with my Dad a long time ago. :tops:

Better yet, Sacrifice a Brahmin as a sign of our devotion and our want for an M2 Carbine. :tops:

I actually like reloading a gun for 30 sec. or longer even in the middle of combat.

That would be nice.
But I prefer the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karabiner_98k and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gewehr_43 over the M1 and M2 carbine.
