NV Weapons

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 12:16 pm

I just hope the weapons are more in keeping with Fallout 1/2 - either being fitting for the 1940s-50s time period, such as with the Tommy Guns they used in New Reno, or otherwise completely unique "generic" weapons, such as the Vindicator Minigun. The point is, I just don't want most of the weapons to be like Fallout 3's where you can take one look at them and then match them with a real-world counterpart. They have to be fairly generic or otherwise awesome (such as with, again, the Tommy Gun).

This is just for regular firearms, of course. Energy weapons should return in full! :)

True, I wouldnt oppose seeing military version of the tommy gun they did see action in WWII and considering the Fall out universe was identical to ours during the WWII years I could live with a catche of old WWII tommyguns being found and used in New Vegas. But in the end I think as was pointed out it will rely heavily on if there will be multiple kinds of ammunition or if they would have the same caliber for it to be used. Funny thing is in FO3 I stuck with the hunting rifle till I got some powerful energy weapons and then I tossed the hunting rifle off to the side. I am sure New Vegas would be the same way if they do the game right.

I just want a friggen pump action shotgun and molatovs, is that so much to ask?

I would love a Pump-Action Shotgun. The one's in FO3 were cool, but none were Pump-Action! If I could only choose 3 new weapons, they would be;
1: Pump-Action Shotgun
2: Bolt-Action Rifle
3: Crowbar (The only weapon I really wanted in FO3)

No offense, but your lack of knowledge about guns is really apparent.

Almost everything you have thus far said about guns is baloney.

Really? So you belive theres no such thing as bolt action shotguns? You dont belive a 12ga slug shot from a bolt action shotgun couldnt penetrate two bodies?

I mean come on, come out with it, you said what I said about guns is baloney but yet you dont point out what. I am wondering if you even have owned a gun considering you are just jumping in saying I am a "liar" basically but yet not saying why. I admited you can shoot slugs out of non rifled barrel shotguns I never said you couldnt, it was just a communication error on my part that I corrected and admited to.

Not to mention if what I stated about guns is all "baloney" as you said I wonder why the one guy that stepped in to say that you can shoot slugs out of a non rifled barrel shotgun didnt say the same thing. He pointed out an error and I corrected it. I knew full well he was right, I just didnt choose my words right so it sounded like I ment you couldnt shoot a slug out of any shotgun without a rifle barrel when I was infact saying you couldnt shoot one out of a non rifled barrel and still maintain projectile spin for accuracy and projectile stability.

On this page alone:

No I said Bolt actions are the only shotguns that CAN use slugs because of the rifled barrel.

Any shotgun mechanism I can think of, from pump to auto to breech loading, can have a rifled barrel, and examples of all of these exist, though arguably they’re no longer shotguns at all once their barrels are rifled—they become rifles. That’s basically what a 12-gauge shotgun becomes once the barrel is rifled—a .729 caliber rifle with a slow, chunky bullet that is virtually useless for hitting anything past a few hundred yards.
BTW that slug I posted the link of above that is about 1 3/4" - 2" across in diameter.

No. If it’s a 12-gauge slug, its 0.729” in diameter.
I think the only sniper rifle that would do as much damage as that slug would, would probably be a BMG .50 cal sniper rifle.

Most 12-gauge slugs I’ve ever seen advertise a muzzle energy of around 2400-ish ft/lbs, though they can vary. I can write out a virtually endless list of common hunting calibers which can meet and exceed this.

First off its still a shot gun with or without a rifled barrel, and yea any shot gun can have a rifled barrel but guess what 99% of the time all bolt action shotguns are rifled barrels. The other shotguns typically are non rifled because they werent really ment for shooting slugs.

Funny on the 2000 ft/lbs because the slugs I use are rated at 2361 ft/lbs at the muzzle. Hell the slugs I used to have till my local gun shop stopped carrying them had a 2538 ft/lbs at the muzzle and still maintained 1170 ft lbs at 200 yards. So implying that they cant go over 2000 ft lbs isnt a smart thing to do.

Now lets compare the slugs I have rated at 2,361 ft lbs at the muzzle to some other caliber rifles and the muzzle energy they have.

.223 Caliber = 99 ft/lbs
.204 Ruger = 1308 ft/lbs
.243 Win. = 1993 ft/lbs
6mm Rem. = 2133 ft/lbs
6.5x55 SE = 2100 ft/lbs
.30 Carbine = 967 ft/lbs
.30-30 Win. = 1902 ft/lbs
7.62x39 = 1552 ft/lbs
.303 British = 2420 ft/lbs <--- same caliber used in WWII in the machine guns on fighter planes
.357 Mag. = 960 ft/lbs
.44 Rem. Mag. = 1650 ft/lbs
.45-70 = 1590 ft/lbs

Shall I go on? So far the only caliber that has a higher ft/lbs muzzle velocity than the current slugs I use at the muzzle is the .303 british caliber but yet its less than the slugs I used to have rated at 2538 ft/lbs.

Now yea there are other calibers way higher than the ones I listed but considering those calibers are more or less military calibers the avg person wouldnt have so there for shouldnt be brought into the mix of civilian weapons.

A bolt action shotgun would the easiest repeating shotgun type to produce after an apocalypse. I am all for one if they can make one that looks like someone built it with hand tools in a machine shop or a garage.
It would also be about the easiest type of weapon to make after an apocalypse. You dont even have to rifle a hard steel barrel. 3/4" diameter pipe from a hardware store will do for a barrel (scrounging this sort of pipe from old homes or other sources would also make it fun (players could get schematics for a shotgun and then go scrounge parts to make them). Taping a piece of 3/4" pipe with a shotgun shell in it onto the end of a BB gun also works. (that would make the BB guns worth something in the game... for more than just radroaches)

I think that The pre war weapons should be relatively rare and in many cases more powerful than the more modern ones.

You could make one out of steel pipe. Hell I seen a guy make a .223 caliber rifle out of a plastic pen. It was a one shot use but it still worked though. But in the end .223 isnt that powerful but it can still kill.

All you would need is a spring, a metal "cocking" shim that would [censored] the firing pin back when you pull the bolt back, a barrel assembly or pipe to hold the shell/slug in place, and a trigger assembly that would push up on the "cocking" shim and release the firing pin. That is about as simple as you can make it, and that is using a 1947-1954 .223 caliber bolt action rifle I have as an example of how easy you could make a bolt action from scratch.

A pump would be faster firing but would require more precision machined parts for everything to work together. Not to mention out in Nevada I am sure they wouldnt last long laying around. That sand would do a number on a pump, especially if the one who dropped it didnt keep it clean or oiled correctly.

As far as pre war weapons goes, I agree you shouldnt find them all over the place unless it was a common pre war civilian gun like a hunting rifle. Other than that, they should be hard to find or locked away.

First off its still a shot gun with or without a rifled barrel,

According to any standard definition, it's a rifle. That's why they call it a "rifle." It just uses the same standardized cases most shotguns use. People still call them shotguns to simplify things, but they're simply 12-bore rifles.

You're right about me writing the wrong muzzle energy. It is often 2400-2500. That's still significantly less than a standard .30-06 or .308 load which is around 2800. Common magnum calibers can run many hundreds higher.

Also you just wrote out a list of rifle calibers on the extremely low end of the power scale. In fact, some of them are more common in handguns than rifles. The only real rifle round you listed was the .303, and in fact, I would consider .303 to be on the low end of the power scale considering the dozens of magnum calibers have become common today.

Funny because I have numerous gun advertisemants calling them "repeater shotguns" or "bolt action shotguns" In any case the rifled barrel doesnt make them a rifle. Just because they have a rifled barrel doesnt mean they are a rifle for the simple fact that you still can use shotgun shells in them. By your definition that means I can stuff shotgun shells in my rifles because your definition says my bolt action shotgun is a rifle cause its a rifled barrel. I guess black powder cannons used back in the Civil war were rifles as well cause most of those had riffled barrels as well.

Funny again, the list I have has the .303 being up on the high end of the list. Hell even a .44 Rem. Mag. is still just 1650 ft/lbs and your talking about the .303 being on the low end of the scale compared to all the magnum calibers out? Hell a .22 Magnum is only rated at 1094 ft/lbs. In the end it all depends on the powder load. More gun powder equals higher muzzle energy. Hell I could take and custom load some .223 rounds and get 1810 ft/lbs out of them if I wanted to by over loading them.

Hell the 00 buck military load I use in my 12ga pump has a military powder load and produces a 1,625 fps, higher than others just rated at 1,200 fps. So in the end how about we drop this petty argument and get back on topic. You apparently know about guns but you get the definitions screwed up. But I will remember to mention you in my blog though, calling shotguns with rifled barrels rifles is funny considering lots of guns have rifled barrels but not all are rifles.

Hell just looked up the fps on some of those rifle rounds and I have to say not all are impresive. For instance I see a .458 Win. Mag. only has a 1,650 fps how pitiful is that when you have a .458 winchester magnum bullet traveling just 25 fps quicker than my 12ga winchester military load 00 buckshot. Oh well, I am washing my hands of this argument for the simple reason this isnt for arguing this is for discussing what weapons we want or would like to see in New Vegas. Not a [censored] size contest on who knows more.

Fallout and Fallout 2 had 12-gauge bull-pup semi-auto shotgun, with 3 round burst capability and 12 shell magazine, the winchester city-killer.
I would really love to see it back. Fallout 3 combat shotgun looked like crap in comparison.

I could go for that, semi auto shotgun with the upgrade ability to make it full auto. Or even better make it a selectable shotgun between semi auto/burst/full auto

Funny again, the list I have has the .303 being up on the high end of the list.

You have a weird list.
Hell even a .44 Rem. Mag. is still just 1650 ft/lbs

That's a common handgun caliber.
Hell a .22 Magnum is only rated at 1094 ft/lbs

That's a .22. That's a varmint load at best. I don't know why you're stuck in these calibers. Two extremely common calibers, possibly the most common, .30-06 and 308, both regularly do about 2800. A .300 Win Mag--very common--does more than 3000. Mine do something like 3300, in fact. The .50 BMG you mentioned, by the way, is well over 10000. A 12-gauge doesn't even compare.
But I will remember to mention you in my blog though

Uh, okay.

I see now, troll? looking for a internet fight? What is it cause I have already done said I am finished. You dont even have the comprehension to comprehend I said that a slug could go through two bodies and the only sniper rifle that could do that would be a BMG .50 caliber sniper rifle. Who gives a [censored] about the muzzle velocity, you can tweak that by varying the powder load out. Why do you think "target" load outs have such a smaller muzzle velocity and fps compared to standard. Thats cause they have less powder in them. In the end you dont have no way to prove that yours does something like 3300 unless thats what it says on the box and even then it would vary based off the gun.

I mean god muzzle velocity can be tweaked in numerous ways, you can shorten the barrel to increase muzzle velocity, you can increase the powder load if you load your own rounds, hell you could even go with a larger powder load round. I can get what is called a .22 LR magnum round for the .22 I have which is basically a .22 LR round with a magnum powder load out provides the same exact muzzle energy as a .22 magnum. Hell I could take my 12 ga pump and saw the barrel back shorten the barrel and boost it up like a mini hand held cannon. The muzzle energy would go way up and it would probably shoot more like a 6 ga than a 12 ga.

In the end as I said drop it, it wont be long before a mod gets involved over this drama that you are starting and draging out even though I have already said once to drop it. Now if you want you can reply back dragging this out more but I wont say that I wont send in a report about you trying to start arguments and trying to keep the thread off topic after I have tried a second time to drop this.

Oh yea I wanted to throw this in there just for you.

.308 Win. Mag. = 2648 ft/lbs
.30-06 Spfd. = 2342 ft/lbs
.300 Win. Mag. = 2540 ft/lbs

Those three are specs listed for the first rounds of each of those calibers I found. So only thing I can say is if you are using 3300 ft/lbs out of a .300 winchester magnum then you must have a overloaded powder load on those or you have a shorter barrel.

Okay, 12-gauge slug does about 3700 joules of muzzle energy. At 90 meters (100 yards) it has only 1400-1500 left, maybe worse. A .308 at 90 meters (100 yards) will have about 3000 joules of muzzle energy left.
At range a shotgun , even a rifled one firing slugs, wont be as good as a rifle firing a common .308 cartridge. Only if you are using it at close range, is slug better in terms of performace.
Americans should really start using joules.
