Weird/Wacky Wasteland Trait

Post » Sun Mar 13, 2011 11:07 am

Incredibly stupid as a trait.. should just be a toggle. Seems like a waste that you would have to use up a trait just to see stuff you'd like to see.. If I wan't to make a small frame, four eyed character I would now have to forgo that character build just so I can see the wacky stuff I'd want to see in the first place. dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

Look, like I mentioned. There are probably TONS of funny and weird things in the game. This probably adjusts the frequency and crazy level.

Instead of complaining, when you haven't even tried it, be constructive. It's most likely not a toggle because it's another way to play and enjoy the game.

Come on now. It seems so obvious.

It'd be nice to have a dev come and fix this issue.

Why would you have to forgo that character?

In the other fallout games you are only allowed two traits when making a character. Now if you want to play the game with Fallout Humor you would need the Wild Wasteland Trait. That means he could not make a character with Small frame and four eyes. He can't have all three. Wild Wasteland if I am right and I hope I am not is a Fallout Humor switch, want fallout humor you need to have Wild Wasteland.

Hopefully it's what others have said it could just speed up the rate at which you encounter the funny things like easter eggs. Devs please clear things up for us.

I see what your saying.. if that's the case then I'll be fine with it... As long as it's not a "4th wall humor toggle trait" everything will be just dandy. I could easily understand a frequency of funny things changer as some people just play the main quests and don't wander the wastes endlessly searching out every bit of stuff there is to see. However I"m not sure how that would work if there's say.. a funny thing over in a building in the east.. how would it speed up the frequency of seeing that funny thing unless you go to that building?
In all actuality it's beneficial for me to see things negatively before games come out... If I remain in the negative I get to be pleasantly surprised by the game.... If I get too over positive I't's almost a guarantee that I'll be let down. It's a defense mechanism I've made up to keep me safe from disappointment...

What's a fourth wall humor?

It's humor in which characters acknowledge the medium they are in, such as a video game character referring to save games and the like.

What EwokLord said.

There was a point in Fallout 2 where the PC says (via floating text), "I think you should save your game" (loosely.. I don't know if the wording is exact).

The quote was:

Chosen One: "For some reason I think I should save my game in a new slot."

It was at the bridgekeeper special encounter.

I think that the bridge may return or ones similar because they said that there will be good and bad encounters.

I'm really excited for this trait, I hope there are a lot of film icon clothing I'm going to use the Indy hat for clearing out old ruins of lost treasure. But I'll need Moar outfits

I am going by this "An odder one, Weird Wild Wasteland, would turn a lot of the game's cheekier jokes on or off. For example, you can play New Vegas with a willingness to come across a refrigerator that contains a bullwhip and hat — or you can play without worrying about seeing them. The jokes are an homage to Fallout 2, which was also full of pop-culture references to the delight of some fans and the consternation of others."

Not having this trait you won't come across the references to FO2. With it you will. I think that svcks. I want to see them and I will for every play through, so I will have to pick it with every character I make. Why not just have the jokes show up no matter what? Is it to keep those that have not played the other fallouts from having their heads explode "Arrrg I don't get the joke... Brain goes Boom!." If anything it should make people want to play the other fallouts so they can get the jokes.

I for one can't wait to find these hidden FO1 and FO2 Gems :D. svcks I need a trait to find them  At least that is what I understand by reading the description of Wild Wasteland.

ok styles calm down.... he said HOMAGE! homage can mean diffrent things, it can mean an homage in the way that it will refrance the game itself, its jokes or anything else about it, or it could be an homage in the way that it will carry on the tradition of the crazy ass jokes and randomness.

it's a trait not a perk. like in fallout 1 and 2, you had some special traits to start you off. the traits were not required and were not as good a the perks

But what Styles is angry about [as I talked to him about this earlier] is that in order to get those pop culture tidbits you have to use the Wild Wasteland trait, and we will only have the option of getting two traits (unless there's a perk for a third trait, but that's highly unlikely). Take for instance the refrigerator random encounter. There's two possibilities:

1 - The Fallout 3-esque refrigerator random encounter without Wild Wasteland. In this random encounter a refrigerator randomly generates in a random terrain, but is unable to be opened.
2 - With Wild Wasteland activated the refrigerator can open and inside is a skeleton with a hat and a bullwhip as a comedic reference to the infamous scene from "Indiana Jones & The Crystal Skull".

Basically with Wild Wasteland the pop culture jokes inside of random encounters becomes activated, but ONLY with Wild Wasteland.

This is annoying and aggravating because a player may want to select Four Eyes and Small Frame, but also want those pop culture references, and the only option for that is to sacrifice the slot for one of those traits for a pretty insignificant thing (immersion of a character vs. some jokes).

These kinda games aren't supposed to be able to be completed with a single character though... that is to say: I've played dozens of characters in all the fallouts, and each one gets slightly different experiences... I hope the (additional) humor isn't the only thing that might not be available based on my build...

Oh I know, and I'm sure Styles knows as well, but a player may grow bored of a certain character and want to switch over to another playstyle (i.e. stealth build, charismatic build, etc.), but may not have experienced all the random encounters and may not have gotten to experience all of the jokes. So they can either get Wild Wasteland again and possibly get the same jokes again and a few more, or could opt for a different trait to help with immersion.

It would've been a lot better to simply have an option to activate or deactivate the pop culture references in random encounters than making it into a trait since it's a pretty weak trait. Traits should always effect your player, random encounter or not. But with how Wild Wasteland sounds, it doesn't sound like that, just a way to appease both the fans that like(d) the pop culture references, and the fans that did not like them (which isn't bad, it's a great thing to do, but it could have been added in, in a different way).

It's nice to know that Obsidian made the choice of making this an option
they'll certainly be cutting down on the constant stream of complaints

yep the perfect solution, replace the constant stream of complaints about the fact that they made the game too cheezy with constant complaints that you have to use a precious trait to unlock content.. . ..... ..

Im either being cynical or honest,. I prefer optimistic...

I dunno... I think the best option woulda been to tell the critics to stuff it, and include the additional humor in the plain build, no toggles, no trait... But I really don't see a problem with choosing a trait that activates special encounters...

I am happy fallout New Vegas will have Marcus,Traits and Damage Theshold back but the Fallout Humor is optional?

What is considered fallout humor? Over the last month I've completely played FO1, FO2, and tactics, and I havent really seen much of what you are talking about.

Fallout Humor is the pop-culture references, not just ones from 1950's era. Fallout Two has alot. Tactics has things like "Foo Fighter and Google" on the walls. More Dark humor as well.

I was right "Wild Wasteland" is a Fallout Humor Switch. So thanks now my characters are handicapped from the start. First part of bad new about Vegas. Everything else is awesome.

Pop culture references; making jokes or including things that exist in our world but not in Fallout lore.

Like for instance the refrigerator with the bullwhip and hat is a mockery of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbrzQMbTYZM from "Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".

It could very easily be a matter of going player.addtrait .

Heck, traits may even simply be perks with disadvantages in game engine terms. The Unofficial Perk Pack for FO3 has some perks with disadvantages, so it's technically possible.

Of course that won't work if you're not on the PC... But that's tough cookies for console players, I'm afraid.
