Like so many things - it depends. The Katana was made as it was because Japanese ore svcked. European methods would have resulted in a horrible sword. The folding technique allowed the Japanese to create a very high quality sword from bad material. This is a compliment to Japanese sword makers, that they were able to do so much with what they had.

The Katana is arguably the best slicing sword ever made. Against the relatively soft targets it faced in Japan there is no sword better. Against heavily mailed mid-medieval European armor, not as good. Against late medieval plate - not good at all. Of course it never had to face late medieval plate, so historically it is a non issue.

In the game, however, it does have to face heavy plate armor. Well, in the game we can shoot fire from our finger tips, so why not a sword that can slice through plate armor .

Anyhoo - not trying say the game should conform to reality or that the Katana was not a good sword. Just that the facts are a bit more complicated than "best" and "worst" and IMHO make for a very interesting read.

Must resist the urge to add to this... not derail thread...

Ok, urge momentarily suppressed... back on topic...

Not just spears, I'd like to see polearms in general. Weapons like halberds, glaives, ransuers, poleaxes etc.

There are a lot of requests for the addition of spears but the spear is a thrusting weapon and skyrim does not have a thrust attack option only swing. Not being able to stab with a sword is bad enough but swinging a spear would be just silly.

They'd probably just need to make a new attack animation for spears.
Halberd types would be cool because you could chop with a normal attack and stab with a power attack (or vice versa).

Loads.

I most want to see unarmed weapons. Knuckledusters, gauntlets, claws, steampunk powerfists, boxing tape, anything unarmed would be welcome.
There 1 unarmed weapon in the entire game! That's not enough :(
I love unarmed fighiting. It's my favourite style on Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3.

I would also like to see.
Spears
Scythes
Kamas
More Scymitars
Crossbows. I mean come on! No crossbows?!
Spearguns.
Throwing knives, axes, etc
Flails
Chain maces
Whips, if possible, but they would probabely be hard to implement.
Katanas

And any weapons I missed. The more weapons the better.

I think we have enough weapons as it is. I want new moves instead. You can at the moment smash, slice, stab, stagger, block and that's pretty much it. Even less if you're using ranged or magics attacks where animations are quite similar. Boooooooring. Let's see some proper dodging, rolling over, grappling, launching yourself at the enemy... you know, the usual stuff.

That's how I look at it. If you add a whole bunch of different weapons, then the player has a lot of options. If there's a weapon in the game you don't like, then you can simply choose not to use it, but if it's not there to begin with, then you're stuck without it.
I still want my crossbow. :( But *shrug* oh well.

I want swords that have stabbing attacks like rapiers. I'm also in love with the idea of crossbows.

No Runes ?

This is not RuneScape, which is a good thing some-what. Good thing for magic, for sure.

You can cast a sort of "rune" on the terrain. Like Fire Rune, which explodes when enemies get close.
But I'm guessing you mean more like physical rune stones, right?

I was referring to the Futhark runes that were used to inscribe weapons as well as divining.

There is no difference. Unless, for the chain mace, the person is thinking of a ball at the end of a long chain without the handle.
