What's with the weird foreign accents

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:51 pm

Jokes aside, I like their foreign accent of nords? Why? This is a province so people talk with some local language influenced accent.

Besides, I'd hate to have an axe wielding Valkyrie speaking with the accent of a Texan cowboy.

This game was made in America, they don't know real accents :P

As an Englishman, I can tell you the british accents aren't accurate, either.

It just seems like they got Americans to say out lines in a accent.

Ends up sounding like this

I did find the Nord women had a weird eastern european accent, not very northern, but whatever. I assume they are Americans attempting accents they have not studied. Bad, but whatever, if brings flavor to the world. I would have like to see specific accents to specific races. A good Nigerian accent for the reguards would have been awesome. The Dunmer, well, don't know about accent, but dammit I wish they had that gritty hoarse voice they had in Morrowind. The Kajit are good as is. The Nords, well . . . would have been nice to get some Sweeds or Danes or something to voice them, or more Czechs like Kulich (Ulfric). But overall, I think the fact that this time around they have a broader palette lends so much more to the game, even if they aren't real accents in some cases.

i like the accents

if they had "American" accents i'd have only played the game for about 10 mins then walked away and btw imo there 's a very simple reason the Schwarzenegger accent in in there: Conan...ie its just being lifted from the general barbarian adventuring area in the zeitgeist. imo it fits and it makes me smile...which was in all probability the intent...

Everyone seems to be assuming that Nords are directly equivalent to Norseman, which isn't entirely the case. A lot of their background is based on Vikings, sure, but there's also plenty of more generalized Germanic barbarian stuff going on with them, too - and even some Braveheart-esque Scottish Highlander crap. Thus, a wide variety of accents tends to make at least some sense.

I can tell you right now that Nords definitely don't have a Swedish accent.. but its not earth so I dunno. They can sound however they want

Also, at above the whole blond hair blue eyes, from a far north country which has the northern lights, helmets with horns out the side etc.. makes me think of norseman. But hey just my oppinion.

The Nords sound like a Hollywood-Scottish accent to me for the most part, other than the guards.

General Tullius is the one that usually throws me, the Empire has a Texas province?

hey all i love the game really amazing i just wish they use proper voice acting because most people especially the nords have a weird foreign accent. should be all american or british but other than that great game !!

Lol, lol, lol. Any particular actors from those two nations (well by American I guess we could include Canada which has French speaking and accented parts) who should be doing the voice acting?

I'm hearing the Nords, all NORDS including the women, having a really strong Brooklyn accent. Maybe a couple that sound like Foghorn Leghorn just for variety.

But seriously - no. Just no.

Except in Germanic languages, the w is not silent. ;)

that why, if i watch something japanese, i like the english subed version

Word.

Let's examine... as pointed out, the Nords are based on real-earth Norse/Germanic cultures. This being the case, you should expect to hear these types of "accents": Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, German, and yes, even Austrian. Not to mention, Russian, Scots, and other surrounding nationalities affected by the 'Viking' cultures.

Is this an 'accent' or 'affectation'?

That depends, If you were born and raised in New Jersey, yes. In, London, Morraco, Peking, Paris, New Zealand, or Botswanna? Yes. If your from Any region named in the first section here, these are not accents, they are the way you normally speak.

If you can't come to grips with this, you do not have the imagination required to get the full impact of the game you are playing.

I quite like the accents, adds to the atmosphere. Though I admit I am glad they did not include my language's accent (Dutch), as that would have been awkward for me. Then again, the few real good English-speaking Dutch (voice) actors don't have a really noticeable accent (Famke Janssen, Rutger Hauer, etc).

Ulfric Stormcloak was voiced by a Czech born Canadian, so I guess that's close enough.

I'm honestly very impressed with the voice acting, it's pointless saying 'don't use foreign accents' when the term 'foreign' implies a different meaning for everyone, depending on what country you come from. The OP, for example, suggested American or British, of which both accents are foreign to me.

Yes, they should go away from the Austrian accents and go with American accents like this:

Most definitely. Norseman are easily the strongest influence on the background of the Nords. But...

The woad face paint and the Stormcloak armor is straight out of Braveheart.
The overall political situation in Skyrim with regards to the Imperials is much more akin to southern Germanic tribes than anything the Scandinavians ever experienced with regard to the Roman Empire.
Also, the tactics the Stormcloaks use are far more "Germans raiding the Romans" rather than Norseman doing their thing. Or, again, Scots vs. the English.
There are a lot of clearly Scandinavian names. There are a fair few names that are definitely more Germanic.
Just to throw another wrench into the works, take a look at Whiterun and Markarth and tell me they're not suspiciously reminiscent of the look of the Rohan forts/towns from The Lord of the Rings, which gives you a nice Anglo-Saxon angle.

Etc. I could go on. Viking is definitely the dominant theme, but there are plenty of others, as with a lot of the races.

I like the accents. It is not specific but it establishes Skyrim as a different Area. The only thing breaking it is ... kids... they all speak like they're from California. As for specific accents.. They're all over the board, they're not region specific.. which for me is more realistic.
Btw: The Whiterun court wizard sound an awful lot like some of my countrymen trying to speak English (being from the Netherlands), I half expecting him to say "Ja" at some point.

Not the Nords, though. They are intentionally Scandinavian. They're comparable to Vikings, who are Scandinavian. The accents are correct, if a little odd at times. Some Nord guards randomly sounding South African, for example.

The most common accent I hear is Austrian (male) and Czech (female). So, no, they're not at all correct for Scandinavians.

Could be intentional, which would lend support to my interpretation. Could be bad accent sourcing, which wouldn't.

No! Only Cockney carries the right gravitas necessary for the proud warriors known as the Nords.
