Where are the gay couples in Skyrim?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 5:40 pm

I'm a rare thing in the real world, but I don't care about what's normal.

You and I are both gamers; we shouldn't EVER care about what's 'normal.'

If you could make a world that goes against reality (such as dragons existing), wouldn't you want those things be clearly depicted?

It's like in Morrowind and Oblivion; there was more TALK of dragons than there were actual dragons. If your game was Skyrim, wouldn't you want all of its features to flow with it's lore, and do more than just talk about it (or in this case, only let the player show those features exist)?

I'm not saying I'm right and everyone else is wrong, nor do I want Bethesda to cater to me happening to be of the LGBT community. I'm just trying to point out what I think was a missed opportunity and explaining myself for what I think.

I was actually just about to get back to playing; didn't set this up to be my battle for the day, lol.

im just gonna come right out and say it lots of people think its disgusting. I'm sorry but its true, if you're straight your body literally rejects that idea, it makes you uncomfortable to think about extensively, which I'm sure (maybe) true for gay people thinking about what we do. But its also true that not as many people are gay and there really is no reason to hop on the bandwagon and force homosixuality into a game that doesn't need it. There is no six in skyrim, when it comes download the graphic six mod and I'm sure there will be options to engage with men

Seeing how every NPC tells me their life stories when i pass by them, i doubt it
And you think that NPCs telling target audience kids about taking a gay to the knee every time they walk past them would be a good idea?

I was running around the Archmage's quarters in my loincloth after I destroyed my robes at his disenchanting table. He said I was making him all warm inside or something along those lines. So I'd say the Dean of Magical College is gay.

They didn't make them because then they'd have to create a whole new crime/punishment system because killing them would be much more serious than killing other townfolk since the murder would have to be considered a hate crime rather than just crime, so your jail sentence would be longer, fines doubled... NPC would be branded on your forehead because you're Not Politically Correct, which would completely destroy the forums because no one would know what anyone else is talking about when they say the saw an NPC with a gang of Bandits... it would be mayehm and would disrupt the very FABRIC OF SKYRIM SO-CI-E-TEY!!

When I first met Carlotta Valentia in Whiterun and she was telling me how she didn't want a man around I immediately thought - oh, ok, so she's super hot but liked women and none of the stupid men understand that. Which still could be the case: after her husband died she decided she either doesn't need to hide her sixuality or she doesn't want to have to pretend to like a man just to be married to someone/she has a daughter, that's what she wanted, so now she wants to get on with her life.

But yeah, it would be cool if more games had LGBT characters thrown in to the mix (not as token characters, or necessarily even important, but just part of the world).

Edit: Also, a personal annoyance (on the topic of heteronormativity being forced on the player): the Allure perk in the Speech skill tree only works on the opposite six. Yeah, it isn't a huge deal to me, but what if my character didn't want to only charm ladies (as a guy) but also charm guys to get better prices (even if he wasn't gay)? Problems of too much heteronormativity.

Because just like in the real world actually occurence of deviant orientation is a very rare thing. So sure its possible, but its isn't normal. People like you always want to normalize your behavior and force the rest of us to acknowledge and accept it. The ONLY reason the option is even there is so that people like you wouldn't whine about "not being allowed to be gay in the game".

That doesn't mean they have to fully support the notion. Consider also that if they included multiple overt examples of homo behavior in their game, they "might" turn off some of their normal customers (who GREATLY outnumber the LBTG customers) and could stand to lose a lot of money.
It's only "deviant" and "abnormal" in our very specific and very [censored] society. In other cultural contexts it HAS been the norm, and in Elder Scroll's lore it is an accepted occurrence. See this passage from the book "Ahzirr Trajijazaeri", which can be found in Skyrim
3. "Fusozay Var Var": "Enjoy Life"
Life is short. If you have not made love recently, please, put down this book, and take care of that with all haste. Find a wanton lass or a frisky lad, or several, in whatever combination your wise loins direct, and do not under any circumstances play hard to get. Our struggle against the colossal forces of oppression can wait.
Good. Welcome back.
I'll refrain from using Vivec as an example, because he's far from normal especially with regards to gender roles and sixuality. But I will link to this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1162941-sixual-preference/
It goes over the subject pretty well. The world of TES doesn't suffer from our society's definitions of what is "normal" or "deviant", and you're [censored] [censored] if you think that hetersixual monogamy is the only statistically significant form of relationship in any given cultural context.

They didn't make them because then they'd have to create a whole new crime/punishment system because killing them would be much more serious than killing other townfolk since the murder would have to be considered a hate crime rather than just crime, so your jail sentence would be longer, fines doubled... I want to know where all the schizophrenic couples are. Or the trios. Or the guy who married his Dwemer automaton.

I know people of a perceived minority tend to be used to having things catered to them, but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

"Target audience kids"? I'm looking at my game case right now, and Skyrim is rated "M" (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, sixual Themes, and Use of Alcohol. How is the target audience "kids"?

Calvicus Vile is gay, I'm telling ya.

Seriously though, it's obvious why Bethesda decided on this approach.
1. Homosixuality doesn't fit into the world they created. We're emulating a sort of a medieval society here, and while it's true there were gay couples during that time, they certainly didn't get married and walk together on the streets announcing this to everybody who walked by. I'm sure it never even crossed the devs' minds to put gay couples into the game. It's just something that some of us would want, but it's no tragedy if it's not there.

2. It's 2011 and it's a standard that RPGs allow for wide customization of the character. We've come a long way since the male, straight protagonist - now players have a choice. It would be stupid to create a game with marriage feature and then exclude homosixuality.

Personally, I don't know about the rest of so-called "vocal minority", but I'm gay and I have no problem with there not being any open homosixuals in Skyrim. I'd be happy if they were included, sure, but it's such a minor issue I don't really think it's worth discussing. I'm quite satisfied with the ability to play as a gay character, and I'll take realism over political correctness anytime.

ah yes this has gone in the "comparing our society to tamriel society" direction as its been said before i dont recall tamriel giving a damn in that regard......if they did would two men or women be getting married in riften in the first place?

And alcohol is only consumed after a citizen comes of age.

I actually imagine it's one of those that developers might like to do, but wouldn't due to the contrversy it would stir up.
