Besides RPGs I also play FPSs, flight sims, adventure games, H&S and space sandbox games. Too many different kinds of games to make a top 10 list and things may change over time. In the RPG department Skyrim scores high. But so does Dragon Age:Origins, Mass Effect 1, Oblivion, FO:NV, TW1, TW2 and DE:HR. Games like Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 2 and Morrowind are not up there. I also don't care much for the older games. They may have been nice at the time of introduction, but are now replaced by games that are more fun to me. It is also hard to make this a science. It's highly subjective because it deals with fun. It is much like saying red is better than blue. That doesn't make sense either.

Exploration: #1 (followed by FO3 and DAO)
Environment: #1 (followed by Halo and Crysis, I like pretty games)
Writing: has some memorable quotes, but doesn't rank all that high overall. The lack of branching quests and any sort of character development, and the tediously repeated NPC dialog all sort of drag.
Gameplay: I had more fun with ranged combat (archery) in this game than I do in most shooters, plus there's melee, but I'd still rank it behind DXHR, Dragon Age 2, Dragon Age Origins, and Crisis 2
Roleplaying: Number one, actually, the quests lack decisions, but there's enough stuff to do and ways to do it to offer a ton of flexibility in how you play a character. This is one of the first times I've found myself completely abandoning going for 100% completion, and instead just playing a character.

So #1 in 3 out of 5 categories, but I still think I may have enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins a bit more overall. Writing counts for a lot.

*Edit - One more category though. Modding potential. This game's pretty exciting in that department, and I imagine I'll end up having more fun with it than any game to date.

Where does skyrim rank on your all time list for best video game

It's somewhere between 20 and 30. Not really ever thought a ranking list that far, but as a rough estimate I'd say it's about right (and there's a decent 10 position marginal there too).

1. Super Mario Galaxy
2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
3. Fallout 3 (tied with Fallout: New Vegas)
4. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
5. LittleBigPlanet (tied with LittleBigPlanet 2)
6. James Bond 007: Nightfire
7. Darkest of Days (the best terrible game ever, seriously. IGN gave it a 3.5)
8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
9. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
10. Portal (tied with Portal 2)

That is my current list. The order of the games changes arbitrarily, but I have yet to see a game top Super Mario Galaxy.

Right now, fairly low. I just can't give a barely playable, console crashing game high marks.

What I played while it worked was pretty cool though.

Skyrim - xbox (current #1)

They ported Skyrim to the Xbox? I could have sworn Bethesda only made it on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

it's not on the list. Sorry

Then did you need to reply? Anyway for 2011 it was my #2 best game to come out #1 being Infamous 2. Overall things change so I never make that list.

Isn't this a little soon? The DLCs aren't out yet.

I don't know Skyrim's place yet. It'll take me a while to place it- and after all the add-ons. Right now it's not in the top three. It's probably not in the top five.

Most of my list is made by Bethesda, too.

1. Rome Total War - By far my favorite game of all time. I've logged so much time playing the campaign and playing online it's not funny.

2. The Original Tomb Raider - When it came out it was such a good game, I still remember playing it in the living room at home when I was young taking turns with my brother late at night after work.

3. Super Mario Brothers - I also have fond memories of playing this when I was a wee lad. My introduction to console video games, still a classic.

4. Oblivion - I still remember walking out of the underground sewer. Being mesmerized by the beautiful world that lay before my eyes. Walking around in the Imperial City talking with everyone, walking around enjoying the scenery. I played this game for many hundreds of hours. I think part of the charm of Skyrim was lost because I played Oblivion so much. Oblivion was new to me. Skyrim wasn't.

5. Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. Wow, these games are great!!!!

6. Assasin's Creed Brotherhood - I didn't enjoy the first one, but the second one was so awesome. I just played it about five months ago, and found it awesomely good.

7. Morrowind - Such a great game.

8. Mount and Blade - Being able to ride a horse and shoot a bow and arrow, and lance somebody down at full gallop, this game was hours of epic battle fun.

9. Medieval Total War II - Like Rome Total War but with knights! It's AI was kinda messed up though. Although night battles with lots of thundering exploding cannon's were great!

10. I think Skyrim will probably be around here. I'll put it at number 10, or if I'm forgetting a game, which I probably am, a little lower.

Good game, but it doesn′t break top 10...which is in no way a criticism, the game is fun and enjoyable and well worth the time and money spent on it.

Somewhere below Morrowind, BG1&2, Diablo 1&2...above Oblivion, Dragon Age 1 and a lot of other games. Might be sharing a spot with NWN...

If the question was asked of everone? yes.. If just Skyrim lovers? Then no.
Personally; If this game didn't try and grind my PS3 to a halt every time, it would be a clear no.1. It was the most immersed I'd been in a long time.
Alas no more, my PS3 took an arrow in the knee...

Skyrim is the best open world single player game ever made.

Portal2 is 2nd

Red dead redemption 3rd

GTA4 fourth.

Those are the only single player games worth my precious time.

The fallout series are too drab and depressing for me.

Almost tied for first right behind Morrowind. Skyrim is really an Amazing video game. I love large worlds to play in and do whatever i want. And the best part is its singleplayer.
