Whtas happening to Uesp?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 10:09 am

Count my endorsemant in with the ton already present. I always use the game name, a word I want to specifically research, and UESP on the lookup line to find what I want. There's simply no comparison.

You sure you guys don't like the UESP site for nostalgic reasons?
It might be a bit behind on the Skyrim content but it has much more info on every other TES game. That everyone is flocking to the wikia version is rather annoying, since the UESP has a much better base to work with. The Elder Scrolls wiki IIRC started out as an Oblivion wiki and then started focusing on Skyrim. Everything else is a bit barebones:

I use both, but honestly, UESP is more accurate. UESP is just about authoritative (you can trust what's on there 99% of the time). wikia isn't, I've seen factual errors maybe 30% of the time I've been there. And the adds and site design are... not ideal. It reminds me of myspace in the wrong way.

Well first of all; at least 50% of what's on the wiki is lies and half-truths. UESP has quality assurance, it's never lied to me.

Elder Scrolls wiki grabbed top spot in the google search...

All the new players that don't know about UESP have moved over to Elder Scrolls Wiki since it has a more generic wiki name and comes up first.

I find it really sad, UESP put over a deacde into supporting a wiki for the Edler Scrolls series, and then some upstart generic wiki beats it out sincei t has a more generic name.

On the bright side, UESP is much more moderated and checked, if oyu read somethign there, 95% chance it is true.
That "upstart wiki" has better features for searching for information. That alone makes it a better source for info. Yahoo was the premier search engine for over a decade and then Google provided a better search engine. Things evolve, better services are offered, those that don't keep up disappear.

I use UESP and I didn't even know it or elder scrolls wiki existed until about a month ago.

I despise Wikia in general, for anything made on it - it's a difficult to navigate usually, filled with ads that make it slow to a crawl, and a pain for me to read (I prefer dark text on a light background to the alternative). And that would be my verdict even if UESP didn't exist - in that case, I'd mostly use it rarely out of necessity, but that's it.

(Of course, I'm one of those for whom pre-wikied UESP is a bit of nostalgia too. )

The only problem I've ever had with the UESP is that its search function is a bit lacking. If you have so much as a single letter wrong, you will receive zero search results whereas Elder Scrolls wiki will offer suggested results. I go to the wiki to find the correct spelling, then end up using that article since I'm already there. Elder Scrolls lore is filled with crazy names, which can be frustrating when UESP insists you shall never find the correct page unless you spell it perfectly.

I still prefer UESP. It's organization makes a lot more sense and they cover info from more than just the main ES games.

My solution to that is to google the search topic with the word UESP in the search.

I'd wondered what became of M'aiq the Liar's grandfather. Now, we know.

Today I searched up a dead npc I found in a dungeon, who had clearly died by a trap just a few paces away from him that went downhill, thus explaining his position. UESP only had a placeholder, so I went to the wikia. There it explained that the character had supposedly died by a Dwemer Centurion, which was nowhere to be seen and couldn't even fit into the corridors that lead to the room I was in...

Yeah.

I like UESP better now that I've actually checked it out.

I only use UESP. Been using it since I first started playing TES, with Oblivion back in October 2009. Only times I've been on the wikia is when someone here links to it and I accidentally click.

I always go to UESP first. On the seldom occasion when I couldn't find what I wanted, I have tried wikia. In general, though, I dislike the wiki. It is absurdly difficult to navigate through without using the search function.

I've been using/abusing UESP for about 15 years. Since it went wiki, the only time that I haven't been able to find a piece of info that I wanted was when people were spending more time with the new game(s) than writing the articles.

I myself use the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages for lore, information and general elder scrolls knowledge.
The Skyrim wiki is only useful for pictures and information which hasn't been catched onto by the UESP.

The UESP just needs a few people working on adding more information and pictures to it, then it'll be back to it's old self.
