Why are Dwemmer Chairs so Tiny?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 7:42 pm

Just a note: there are in game sources for both schools of thought, that dwarves were normal size, and that dwarves were shorter than average. There's no good reason to believe one source over the other.

Further, for all it's interesting lore, The Elder Scrolls has managed to deliver High Elves that are High Elves, Wood Elves that are Wood Elves, and Orcs that are Orcs. I don't think anyone should be surprised if they decide to give us Dwarves that are Dwarves.

Well, there is the fact that we've seen that they aren't tiny little dudes bulging with muscle.

They were called Dwarves by the giants because in relation to them they are and it just stuck.

Okay, clearing something up to you guys.

Dwemer are about the size of Bosmer, a little bit smaller usually.
They probably didn't weigh much either, as they used machines for all the hard work, resulting in little muscles.
Nothing weird with small chairs.

If you walk up to those as a Bosmer or a Dunmer, you'd notice they were still a little bit smaller in height than you.

Dwemer don't drink ale, they don't eschew magic, they don't prize their beards, they don't revere the ancestors, they're entirely too hasty about engineering advancements, and they don't know how to hold a grudge.

Not a Dwarf.

Because they strongly believed that comfort was below them.

Dwemer were pretty short, at least if you base this on their Ghosts

This guy is not much taller than the desk. I would imagine they would be smaller than the Wood Elves if they were around.

Couple things there.
He's standing in front of the desk by a little distance and his knees are bent in an offensive position. So height scale is skewed. If he were to be standing straight, beside the desk, he would probably be about normal height. The desk would have to be a goood 3-4ft high.

See, that is what i was thinking. Why would people think that they were tall or similar to other Mer? Plus I can't see the small chairs being just an oversight. That is a big oversight.

They're children's chairs. The Dwemer industry relied completely on child labor

Your asking why dwemer aka dwarf chairs tiny? :P

This is 1 of the few instances where there's attention to detail..i only wish they would attend to the player height detail

Every dwemer ghost I fought in Morrowind was smaller than me. His knees are not pointing at weird angles, he is slightly crouched. If you look at his arms and waist and compare that to his legs, he is not even crouched that much in this picture.

Those desks are normal height, as compared to other desks in the game.

IIRC, they were about the same height as my Imperial. I think that picture is misrespresenting them. I'm at work, but I'll fire up Morrowind when I get home, double-check, and screen shot. (I think I've still got it installed.)

Don't forget they were floating in Morrowind, and Imperials are the shortest human race, so take that into consideration.

Dwemer are dwarfs and elves. Just not your classic high fantasy dwarfs and they were by no means ever documented as your typical 3'-4' dwarf. They might not have been tall as Nords, but these chairs are ridiculously tiny. Unless they have tiny legs and tiny behinds they can fit in those chairs.

My Nord was taller then the Dwemer ghosts. But my Nord was taller then most people.
I played a Dunmer once and they were about the same height.

The Dwemer might not be as tall as an Altmer, but then I wouldn't expect them to be.

One thing I will point out though. Is that the height in game is largely a fruitless argument. The Bosmer for example, did they find some steroids for Skyrim?
Because they're about 3ft taller then they were in previous games!

Bretons are?
The Imperial are only slightly shorter then a Nord.

No prob. Not only that, but I'll double-check that I didn't change my Imperial's scale. ;)

Bretons and Imperials are the same height. I thought the Imperials were the shortest of them all, but they are the same as Bretons.

Dunmer are the same as Imperials/Bretons for Height. But, I don't consider Dunmer to be Humans, just Humanoid.

Historically, we are a lot taller than our ancestors. Their 'full size' could very well be smaller than the inhabitants today. A lot can happen in 400 years.

Bretons are clearly shorter then Imperials in Oblivion, slightly less so in Morrowind.
Ditto for the Bosmer. Yet some how they shot up three feet in 200yrs.

What I'm getting at, is in game representations are inaccurate at best.

Really? http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dwarves

Yes, really. The Dwemer are of average elf size, they're called dwarves because this is what giants called them. To giants, yes, they would be small -- to humans, not so much. So they're not the Tolkein dwarves you're thinking of.

The cushions might have rotted away given the time that has past since they were last used.

Also, if they were just normal sized elves... why are they called dwarfs? And if they were smaller than the other races, why is it surprising that they had small chairs?

I just want to know where they met the talking giants. All I've ever heard on say is "Uhhhh" after I hit him. (And that might have been my companion.)
