Why do people need to mod the game so much?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 10:57 am

my whole point can be resume by this:

as a primary example:

if lets say 90% of the users use SkyUI for the game then why not implement ( or reasonable facsimile) it in the game thru a patch?

If 90% of people are using graphic tweaks settings like FXAA or ENB, why not put it in the game officially?

you could put it in the game with an on and off feature so if people still want to keep vanilla then they are all cool. That way when you update the game no one as to worry about recoding the mod or making sure it is compatible since it is officially implemented. No more, will my mod work or not.

and don't come and give me that bethesda cannot do it or afford it or have people work on it. The mod is the code. All they have to do is look at it and implement it as their own. If one person could have done this on his or her own than someone at bethesda can stop working at coding a dlc for a few days and do this for future patches.

People will feel that i am doing a feature request here, maybe so. And i undserstand that people want the game to be their own since they feel it is special. But i feel that it should not be up to the people to serve the needs of all the people who bought the game, it should be the dev-maker of the game that should work on this. Microsoft BS deal or not for console vs pc's.

There's an entire segment of Bethesda customers that buy Bethesda games primarily because they can be modded. Bethesda consistently provides phenomenal platforms for modding. It has nothing to do with how good the original game is (in fact if the game totally svcked no one would take an interest in it), and more to do with the flexibility and power of the tools provided, and the totally free and open nature of the world itself. It's like a huge, intricate set of legos, except animated, interactive, and approaching photorealistic. And installing mods is only one step removed from creating them - you're still taking the game and turning it into what you want, just using big pre-made pieces instead of starting from scratch.

The only time I have used a MOD is for Age of Conan online; the UI was terrible. I was playing an off tank and I needed more space for my abilities.
I personally do not care for Mods on any game, simply because I want to play the game for what it is, if I have to Mod to improve my fun or the stability of the game then I guess the game was not worth playing to begin with.

Skyrim seems like a game that was not completely finished. I believe Bethesda did this on purpose, they are going to release the tool kit soon and the players can finish it. I believe that Bethesda has come to rely on the players to finish the game the way they want it to be. Bethesda can swim in people’s money and laugh because if they released a much more barren and sloppy game then Skyrim, people will still buy it and then say its “OK, the Tool Kit is coming.”

I will only use a Mod in dire situations such as I did in Age of Conan, but those situations are rare. I prefer to play the game for what it is and if other people wish to Mod their game, that is their business not mine.

Why bother? Someone else has already done it for them. So why would they spend the time and money to redo it themselves?

That being said, we might reap the benefits of the mods in their next game. They have admitted to incorporating mods from Oblivion into Skyrim. And they'll do it again for the next game. Skyrim's archery was copied from an Oblivion archery mod. And while they never said it, others have pointed out the similarites between Skyrim's combat upgrades (dual wielding, finishers, etc) and the Deadly Reflex mod.

I haven't laughed that hard since... i don't even remember

For goodness sake man, get http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4862! I had already forgotten it looks like that umodded

Seems a bit too hectic for my tastes, though more and more variety in enemies would be welcome. However I'm staying out of the major overhauls until the CK is released and the real work begins :hehe:
I was going to, until I realized that I almost never used the favorites menu during battle. The only time I use it is to change hotkeys and I rarely do that anymore.

I went to download that machoman mod... then I noticed it was on MEGA UPLOAD. SOPA/ACTA/PIPA/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0-2lzA7_Cg must be stopped!!!

Well, I've already commented. Another reason for mods: after I hear the same sound effect 1000 times, it's nice to be able to drop a different sound effect in a folder and play. Music too. Things just get old, and mods refresh the game. Even something as simple as changing the color of glass armor, it takes about 5 minutes to make 10 different colors to choose.

That's how simple mods can be. A color change or a different song. Doesn't have to mean something is wrong with the game.

Two things I noticed that Bethesda put in Skyrim, were mods from Oblivion -- plants that show a different model when you pluck them, and decapitations. They definately gain from the mod community. It's part of what made Skyrim better.

I just wish they would have included severing arms and legs off. That was awesome.

I don't really mod, but from what i've seen most people mod so they can dress their own perfect little Barbie in skimpy outfits or do other disturbing acts. I don't really approve of this. But everyone is different so more power to them.

If I were to mod, it would add something like 3rd Era Weapons.

I don't. It's only the PC elitists, and nobody important cares about them. Heh.
Don't bother trying to start a console war here. You will lose. Not by the PC crowd, or the 360 guys, or the PS3 players. By the moderators.

Anyways to answer the OP's original question (Why Bethesda doesn't just patch it in) is because a lot of the things really only pertain to PC players. The SkyUI inventory won't work well if a person on console doesn't have an HDTV. The small font won't show up well on tube televisions (Look at the subtitle and menu text for the original Dead Rising on an old TV, you'll see what I mean). FXAA is really only needed for PC as the game looks fine on the consoles, or the consoles don't support or can't handle that it does. Same with ENB.

So most of the things you mentioned are basically only PC compatible. And Bethesda (or almost any developer, really) isn't going to take the time to add something that only one group can use. At least not in many situations. And in Bethesda's case, with the releasing of modding tools, it makes less sense for them to do it, at least from a financial standpoint.

Yeah there may be a better body mod here and there, but most of the mods downloaded add additional content, not just alternative outfits. Case in point: The Lost Spires. A single quest that adds new enemies, NPCs, locations, quests, and over 15 hours of gameplay.

But the mods with the most downloads are better bodies, so that just further cements my claim.

No, ONE mod that is most downloaded is Better Bodies, and the rest add new content, fix things, or add new features. Ignoring all evidence besides what supports your argument won't make you come out on top.

Besides, most people get the better bodies mod because most of the characters in Oblivion looked atrocious. It wasn't to play as some fetish character.

But your claim is that modders and those who DL the mods are DLing because they are perverts? Umm... perhaps I just didn't think the default textures were good enough quality for my PC that can handle much better graphics? Would you "approve" of that reasoning? :)

I'll simply make a list...

Replayability

Free new content

Fixes most issues (SkyUI is much better for a PC then the vanilla one)

Adds weapons/armors (And im not talking about that anime based crap)

Makes a game with decent graphics look like a BluRay movie

Bethesda supports the modding community releasing the modding tools, Which makes mods for their games incredibly awesome compared to any other game and is the reason you should buy Bethesda games for the PC.'

Thats really all I can think of, but mods are what makes Bethesda games so great, People who bought it for console have so many issues and are missing out on mods. Im on PC, and I have none to very minor issues and I get mods, I mean, come on, its a no brainer. I hate mods that add "sixy armor" or the anime based weapons though, it just makes me not want to live on this planet anymore. :dead:

I just checked this, took a look at the Nexus top 100 (both advlt and non-advlt so I don't think I can link it) and, of the top 10 most endorsed files, one is a body mod (number 4), another is a high res face retexture, I guess you might count that. The most downloaded mod is a high res landscape/architecture texture replacer. The most endorsed is a UI overhaul.

Ahaha, you made me laugh.

I personally like the vanilla body the best. But yeah, I seem to be the minority!

Modding isn't about "perfect" or "Bugs" or "unintended features"... it's about being able to take this chunk of clay and sculpting it into a shape you like. It's an artform Bethesda makes sure to encourage with the release of the CS/Geck/CK, whether it be textures, scripting, dialogue, literature, or any of a million types of mods, it's all art. it's not meant to be questioned, it's meant to be enjoyed.

i buy bethesda games for the stories, but keep them around for the works of art we call mods.

Considering the better bodies is advlt only, I think it pretty much speaks for itself.

http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/top
The number one download on this page is the mod manager. with 1,899,852 downloads. The number two is the (advlt only) HG Eyecandy Body with 1,663,190 the only one close is Deadly Reflex and its 400k short nothing else comes remotely close to Eyecandy body.

Do whatever you want, its your game. You don't need my approval. What you do in the privacy of your own home is your business. You people are on the defensive, I'm just calling it how I see it, numbers don't lie.

It's entirely about preference. Modding allows each and every single indevidual personal more or less customize the game to exactly their liking. This makes the game incredibly appealing and not only increases sales, but provides Bethesda with a large community that loves them for creating such a platform and a wonderful game. (That is, when they aren't busy taking the DevKit for granted...)

What I don't understand about Bethesda is they have seen what modders have offered their last two games and yet cannot seem to implement features that are as good as the mods. User Interfaces are a perfectly good example - I don't understand how hard it is to make a good UI. If modders can do SkyUI, there is no reason Bethesda cannot do something as good.

One of my biggest pet peaves is the housing. Seriously, how hard it is it to have storage? You know people are going to want to organize their alchemical ingredients but do they add a sorter or specific storage next to the set - no, they don't. At least let us buy the storage like we do the rest of the features for our houses.

In light of these glaring short comings and many others, people need to mod the game.

How about Bethesda "borrowing" ideas from previous TES games that were modded and using these in Skyrim?
One of the biggest selling points for the last three Elder Scroll releases is the fact that PC players can pretty much customize the game to their own tastes.
I hate to say it, but if you play on the console version you'll never truly play Skyrim to it's fullest potential or understand why mods are so popular.

Hi all,

been following this and honestly i am waiting for the game to be less buggy before i take on my journey.
That being said i have been looking and reading on the game and i was wondering why people need to mod the game so much to make it right?

and why does Bethesda kinda do nothing about it?

example: SKYUI

everyone keeps saying the inventory system is poor and that skyui is the next best thing for the game since ham and cheese sandwich for college student.

ok so if a Huuuuge amount of people are saying that sky UI is better then why doesn't Bethesda do their own mod and change the UI to make it like SkyUI?

ok some people are gonna call the whole steal idea thing discussion but isn't modding the game not akin to reverse engineering and isn't that illegal with software?

so technically Bethesda could get the mod and incorporate it into the real code and a lot of people would be happy... so why are they not doing it?

and there are tons of mods that modify the environment and makes the game better. why not implement it then?

thats my question?

to me the fact that a game has been so heavily modded is not a good sign, to me it feels like a huge chunk of the people do not seem to like your product overall and feel the need to change it....

not good but this is my opinion...

well the real answer is simply that everyone likes different things, a game that allows you to tweak it to what you like is going to be better for you than a game that you have no control over.

are you really that narrow minded dude?
its simply because it looks better, im sure there are plenty of people out there who get it because they are pervs, but most get it because it just plain looks better. Bethesda HAS to design the game in a way that the widest audience can play it smoothly, if they included bodies that high quality they would plain and simply lose a good chunk of the players on pc. not everyone has the omgwtfbbqubergamingrigofdoom. Btw, i do not have any mods that mess with bodies, textures or anything of that nature running, i simply have the dovakhiin hideout mod and "wars in skyrim".
