100% cpu - 0% GPU usage - Constant freezes.

Blubb , Can you give me the Config and Launch parameters you use? I used your fix and while it did work , the FPS is sorta low like on 11.6 unlike the 11.10 45-55 FPS that i get, I was wondering maybe i can improve my FPS by using configs like yours? Also did you need to resort to configs to make it run smooth or it ran smooth without them?

I used so many different configs ... :D But they had no influence on this problem. I believe the frames werent perfect, but under the circumstances of 3 days of eye-pain with the config tweaks the fps seemed perfect....

I want to add, with the patch AND the 11.10 driver (with catalyst ON and no shenanigans) the game runs even smoother than my previous posted solution.

Im now using only the "official" solution and it works perfectly fine now.

I am having the same problem (100% CPU usage). Tried everything I could find on Google and stuff. Nothing worked (I will try to shut down CCC.exe and MOM.exe tonight though). Really annoying. Game so far unplayable for me.

Specs:

Win 7 64 Bit
Core2Duo E8500 @ 3,16 GHz (2 x 3,16GHz)
ASUS HD6950 DCii (2048 MB GDDR5)
8 GB Memory

I can even play Crysis 2 on Ultra but Rage stutters like hell (runs 2-5 secs smooth, then lags for 3-10 secs) after first cutscene (cutscene runs very smoothly). A lot of very, very ugly texture pop-ups too. I don't know what to say...

IF any of you did that cache folder in appdata\local, delete it, should make things alot smoother, or at least it did for me and were all pretty much using the same type of rigs.

I had this exact same problem, I had the game patched and im using the preview 2 driver from ATI
I tried a few config files from the steam forums but nothing helped untill I came across another config on this forum

what im using now is:

for launch option I added
 +jobs_numThreads -1 +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +vt_maxPPF 8

And my config file is like this:
seta com_videoRam "1024"seta image_anisotropy "4"seta image_usecompression "0"seta image_lodbias "-1"seta image_useCache "1"seta image_cacheMegs "200"seta image_cacheMinK "50"seta m_smooth "0"seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"seta vt_maxPPF "8"seta vt_lodBias "-1"seta vt_minlod "-1"seta vt_maxaniso "2"

I have a E8400 dual core processor clocked at 3Ghz
and a ATI 6950 2GB

I hope this will help some of you

Isn't the "seta com_videoRam" the memory your graphics card has? Seeing as you have a 2GB card, wouldn't you want to set it to 2048, not 1024? Correct me if I'm mistaken though, just an observation from what I've seen from other posters

Yeah maybe I should set it to 2048 but its already running with a stable 50/60fps and no noticable texture popping
might give it a go later to see if it runs even better

I found this fix in this thread btw:

So after almost a week of painstakingly trying muiltiple .cfg's and tweaking settings , I have found the culprit , FAH32/64.exe Or commonly known as folding at home , IF you are running a multicore processor whilst playing rage and these processes are open "check your task manager" your CPU usage will rocket to 100% and you WILL stutter , Upon deletion of the program //C:Foldingathome/uninstall.exe my game runs at a constant 60 fps , with vsync on , Catalyst AI on , Tripple buffering , Large cache and max aniso , Upon doing this I also deleted my rageconfig and added jobs_numthreads -1 to my command line.

I really hope this helps someone or a few people

My System

Intel Core 2 Duo 8500 ( default clock, no overclocking)
2x2 Gbyte DDR2 800 Mhz Kingston
Asus P5K WS
AMD/ATI 5770 (Sapphire, 1 Gbyte, no overclocking) with 11.10 Preview Driver Version 2
WD 600 Gbyte Velociraptor
Win7 64 Bit Home with latest Patches and SP (only for gaming, so just 4 games and AV Software is installed)

Rage Patch is installed

with +vt_maxppf 8 and +jobs_numThreads 0 the game is playable but not very fast and with poor graphics

resolution is 1680*1050 (in native 1900*1200 it is not playable) , vsync smart , no tweaking in ccc or rage configs

i hope there will be a fix, but now rage looks like doom3 but is much slower :/

Update :
i will test a AMD/ATI 6850 (MSI, 1 Gbyte) now..

I have the same problem E8400 @ 3.8 Ghz, HD 6990 (MONSTER GRAPHICS CARD) and 8GB of RAM. I can't play this game without freezing every 5-10 seconds. I've dikeed around with drivers and config files, I'm done with that. It just doesn't work.

I just noticed my framerate is only stable when I boot the game with taskmanager open
if I boot the game without taskmanager open I get very unstable framerates which drop from 60 all the way down to 15, with it open its really smooth and stays smooth, dont know why tho but it works for me

I hope this helps for any of the people who are still having trouble with egtting the game to run properly

specs e8400, 2gb ram, ati 5770 / nvidia 8800gt, win xp 32bit.

Wow so many people with same probalem as me.

looks like e series processors don't play nice with ATI cards. When I run my e8400 with my 5770 it just freezes every 3 seconds for 15 seconds.

When I pair my e8400 up with my old 8800gt the game runs awesome and fast with the latest nvidia bf3/rage beta drivers and rage patch.

Interestingly the game runs super fast with transcoding switched off, and not so fast with transcoding switched on.

I recommend sourcing an old 8800gt to play this game.

Alright guys. I just registered to post you my solution. I had the exact same problems. And i tried everything. the 11.6 driver solution was OKish, but way too low fps and looked like crap. With the 11.10 Driver i had the smoothest game, but artifacts all over the place. I did everything posted here, but nothing worked really good ...and then i had it right :D

Im running it on a E8400 dual core with ATI HD6000er on win7 64.

It looks perfect now, and constantly high fps without any stuttering.

I′ll give you a rough idea what you have to do:
______________________________

-Uninstall your current ATI Driver in windows - software

-Use Driver Cleaner to delete any relics of the driver

--Download the official 11.9 driver from AMD. This is IMPORTANT. This is the only driver who worked fine for me with my config.

-Now, restart and install the 11.9 driver --> restart.

-open the catalyst graphic options and put everything to "use application settings" / triple buffer off/ Force VSync ON / (blabla i think thats not the important part)

-Go to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE/Profiles.xml and EDIT. Search for "Catalyst" and you find one entry for the catalyst AI. Change it the "enable" to "Disable"

Now RESTART again.

When windows is up again, you go to the Task manager and Shut down "CCC.exe" and "MOM.exe".

Now you any config for rage which is around, its all nice and stuff.

Run the game and enjoy your sunday :)
______________________________

Key element is: MOM.EXE and CCC.exe seems to be responsible for the 100% CPU Usage on the rage exe. and the 11.9 driver is the only one which worked for me (without AI). The rest is like all the other guys already said and explained. You can use whatever rageconfig or commands on your rage.exe.

I needed 3 days to get to this result, and i want to thank everyone who posted here, it helped me alot because i used every idea from a lot of threads and finally it worked for me :)

I hope this fixes it for some more guys here.

Greetings!

OMFG...this actually works...stupid catalyst AI, couldn't even move an inch in the game before....Hey can you give me your config?....still having little bit of texture popping.

EDIT :
My Specs :
Core i3-530 @ 3.2 GHz
4 GB RAM DDR3 @ 1333 MHz
Sapphire 6790 @ 920/1150

Had to disable HyperThreading in BIOS!

I dont know what happen, it worked flawlessly couple days ago. But got annoying flu going, So couldnt play a while. But when tried game today after couple days, Some reason freezing and rage.ex cpu is again 100%.
And I cant believe anymore this is just a driver issue, I truly hope id guys tracks down what can cause this. I love rage too, but this goes totaly silly, worked good earlier and not now. Havent installed or changed nothing.

Again I runned through steam cache check, and it downloaded something. Then shut all background programs, and it worked again... sigh...

with +vt_maxppf 8 and +jobs_numThreads -1 and the HD6850 and now it is playble

sometimes i have 1 second freezes but not very mutch and some of the textures look very low-res.

looking at the fact that every other game runs smooth it seems that rage has a serious problem with main stream gaming computers
