100% cpu - 0% GPU usage - Constant freezes.

The 11.6 drivers are playable for me. Odd, but they work.

Well, that and some tweaking of config files, etc. But for those suffering with E series processors that want to play this weekend give it a shot.

Something interesting I noticed. With the past several Catalyst releases, performance in all id Tech 4 games (Doom 3 and Prey were the ones I specifically tested) is terrible, huge bursts of stuttering and crashing just like in Rage.

Right firstly im happy to see the thread growing with the exact same problems and almost identical rigs, secondly while some are prepared to revert to lower drivers and what not, im not as i do play other games aswell, and im not going to be reinstalling/uninstalling drivers for each damn game - This is more than a driver issue i suspect, as most people if not 80% of the people are playing with reasonable success, while is here in this thread alone are all using pretty much the same System specs and cant even get it to run at 1fps, its more like 1 frame per minute at the moment. If we could get someone from the dev team to talk to us im sure this would be sorted within days.

Oh and people, please watch the videos i posted earlier in the thread, to confirm that is indeed the exact issue you get aswell, all well in good saying you have stuttering, but is it like the videos?

Bugger it, i did another video, switching to the desktop to bring up task manager, to show that aswell - The game did move for a second and it was smooth as you will see in the video, but back to slideshow, well not really a slideshow as it freezes for ages..Seriously this cant be a driver issue if the Rage.exe reverts back to LOW everytime you start the game and changing it to anything will crash the computer...this is a FRESH install of windows as of monday this week, so no bloatware installed at all, just the normal everyday things.
Anyway video is here, please look and see if this is what you also see on your computers. Also i had to bite my lip as i almost blurted something nasty out when i recorded it lol.

It's unbelievable how this problems happen, especially with great game titles, last year with COD Black Ops the same frustrating problems.Highley anticipated games get to drive us nuts and let us anticipate days if not weeks for a fix....no wonder palyers are migrating to consoles

Ahhh im getting somewhere, well sort of...Something i didnt try was Window mode...Now it sort of works and moves, but still getting alot of freezes, but i made it to the first town...Now its still hammering the CPU at 100% but now its using 15% of the GPU, still not great but a start.
Also with every single freeze, being in window mode i can see my task manager and the top left corner of the window of the game, and in both everytime it freezes it says "not responding" Kinda makes sense but with it being fullscreen before i couldnt see this before..

Also i tryed in window mode with no config files, so the game was running its scaling thing it has, texture pop up was noticable but far out weighed by the fact it still freezes for a good 15 secs then run smooth for 15 secs, compared to the Fullscreen of freeze for ages move for a second.

So not quite sure what other people make of this, IF you could try window mode and see what happens and report back, we might be getting somewhere. Dont know why im doing all this work to be honest, its probably being ignored.

You are totally right if you kill the Catalyst AI the game uses only about 60% of my CPU an old E6400@2.5 the game is well optimized and doesn't need much CPU to run; there must be something wrong in the Catalyst AI for sure and the game must work as advertised with at least 30FPS if you meet the minimum requirements

Its funny you should say that, disabling Cat AI has never worked for me, as when i do the game never launches, so i dont know if that actually does work or not. Im giving up - Why do we Waste good money, that money could of gone elsewhere yet im stuck here troubleshooting a product that doesnt work, and if i want it to work in its current state i have spend More money to achieve that.

Same problem of 100% CPU, 0% GPU. Starts right after first cut scene, slightly improved by going to windowed mode. Haven't tried Cat AI disable

I really dont want to do that, as ill lose performance in other games, but if thats the only way of doing it, i may just do it.

Exact same problem.

Specifically with a ATI Radeon HD5800.

Man seriously -- eff this. This is kafkaesque.

Sry if i may seem ignorant here...is there an official answer for this?
You have a link i can read about?

I mean this (by "this" i mean the 100%CPU 0%GPU issue) is cause by the drivers only?

Enlighten me pls if possible,i tried all new drivers and nothing works.
I mean i really don't understand,if the driver is who's causing this issue and they already released 2 (or 3 is it?),fixes/drivers only for this issue alone and has not beign fixed...

You can keep your current driver, just use atioglxx.dll from 11.6 set and place it in your rage folder.
Game will find it and use it then regardless of what version of atioglxx.dll you have in your system folder.

Actually someone kindly uploaded atioglxx.dll from 11.6 set in this thread. Try it and see if that helps.

Yup that Dll file actually does work, game looks like crap and runs like a dog, but its playable for now. Right, seen as though we all know where the problem is, id like to say sorry to ID and Bethasda for any comments, but Still in any case this should of been sorted before shipped to us. More over it does appear to be a more specific issue with Dual core users, so hopefully all this info will be put to good use somehow.

Nope,i've just tried it and doesn't work for me but thanks.

You know i remembered something...odd,i had this issue with Brink,i was researching for 2 days and finally an older version of drivers did the trick.
Really now...is every Bethesda/id engine going to have the exact same issue?

Cause i know the easy (for me as a paying costumer) solution,if u know what i mean.

Mine is AMD Phenom II x6 1055T processor btw.

The company doesn't care much about PC gamers that's why they're not responding. Because the game was made for consoles at first and aimed to work well on consoles and not PC's, which doesn't make any sense. Why would you release a console ported game for PC, when the game is not fully compatible with all PC hardware. This is the only problem I have I'm able to play SP but I can't start MP, it just freezes my whole PC and I have to Hard Reset it.

Right heres one, ive only seen a handful of people with this issue mainly on the steam forums, they have been ignored and nobody seems to care over there, So im here to see if anyone here also has or had it.
Basically as soon as the first cut scene is done and your in that pod thing, the game freezes for 15-20 secs then resumes for 1 sec, then freezes for etc, all while the GPU is sitting at 0% usage, and the CPU is hammered at 100%...Now there should be no problems with it all, before i even installed the game, i put the ATi performance drivers on (the new ones) so i can just about rule that out. As for anything else ive tried the config files, ending all open programs etc, to no effect. So for the moment while i can get into the game i cant actually move anywhere or do anything due to the constant hammering of the CPU causing the freezing. Anyone got any ideas at all?
Should add i monitor the GPU with MSi Afterbruner and the CPU was with task manager.

C2D at 3.4ghz - 6850 1gb @ 900/1145 - Win7 64bit - 4gb ram.
I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WHERE IT WOULD FREEZE FOR A 2-8 SECONDS THEN GOOD FOR 2. I SAW THAT ONE OF MY 2 CORES WAS SURGING BETWEEN 90 AND 100% WITH THESE FREEZES. WHILE I HAVE A DUAL CORE (FOR NOW) IT IS A DEACTIVATED QUAD. THE 3RD AND FOURTH CORES ARE DEFECTIVE ON MINE BUT THE 3RD CORE DOES WORK OK. SO I ACTIVATED IT AN DECLOCKED ALL 3 AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS NOW. THE TEXTURING EVEN AFTER THE UPDATES STILL ARENT FANTSIC BUT AFTER THEY RELEASE THE CROSSFIRE PATCH/UPDATE I HOPE IT WILL BE BETTER.

I think i may be the only one with this problem not on an E-series...

Intel 2 quad core Q9650 at 3ghz (should be 4ghz but i have vista 32. :(...)
4gb ram
x2 9800gtx

I don't have any texture problems. The tearing is only at the menus so i don't really care about that. But the game freezes like crazy and sometimes will not come back after 2+ minutes. I was however able to play 1 times for almost an hour. Completely smooth, no issues. But... I didn't do anythings special that day. And it hasn't done it again since.

It's working smoothly because you have a Nvidia GPU !

I may have found a fix for myself, thanks to the guy in this post. Need to test it for longer though.
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1238209-low-end-ati-hd-card-game-fixed/
He explain alot of stuff step by step there, but really they key is the clean install of catalyst 11.6
Works as is, the rageconfig.cfg not necessary, although may be used to tweak it further.

E8400 3.6
HD5850 1GB

Works smooth, though textures still changing slow from low quality to high quality, when you look around. Its not as bad as the 100% usage problem, or totally messed up textures, though.
Another problem may be that the recent drivers fix some crashes, that may exist with this old driver. But I just tried it for few seconds to see that the CPU at 70% and everything is fine.

I put this in my rageconfig.cfg now, and the slow textures load almost gone too.
r_swapInterval 1
vt_maxPPF 32
vt_pageImageSizeUnique 8192
vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 8192
vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 8192

1920x1080 x8 AA mode in the game options set.
Resources utilization
CPU: 70-80%
GPU: 60%
GPU MEM: 900 MB

Need quad core :'(

I didn′t want to open a new topic, since I just wanted to say, WTF?

I wasn′t even checking to see what was the GPU or CPU usage for me....

When I did, i was shocked :( .

GPU usage was 37-40% when in game playing. The temperature on my Fermi 100 (GTX470) moved almost nothing, it was 40°C in FULL LOAD . In BF3 Beta tha usage is 100%, and temp between 75-80°C ,which is normal for this card.

They really messed it up this time.

id please end your agreement with Bethesda and do the games your way, beacouse this svcks.

No surround audio
No real graphics
Everything optimized for consoles :( .

Sad, really sad :(
