If you don't have gpu transcoding in video options and it is not enabled then that is why.

Ati doesn't support cuda so we haven't gpu transcoding no love for Ati from ID software want some http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/05/11/id-softwares-john-carmack-picks-a-side-in-the-nvidiaamd-gpu-war/?

John Carmack: "Let me caution this by saying that this is not necessarily a benchmarked result. We’ve had closer relationships with Nvidia over the years, and my systems have had Nvidia cards in them for generations. We have more personal ties with Nvidia. As I understand it, ATI/AMD cards are winning a lot of the benchmarks right now for when you straight-out make synthetic benchmarks for things like that, but our games do get more hands-on polish time on the Nvidia side of things.

Nvidia does have a stronger dev-relations team. I can always drop an email for an obscure question. So its more of a socio-cultural decision there rather than a raw “Which hardware is better.” Although that does feed back into it, when you’ve got the dev-relation team that is deeply intertwined with the development studio. That tends to make your hardware, in some cases, come out better than what it truly is, because it’s got more of the software side behind it".

I have GPU transcoding turned on with my 560Ti, and this problem still persists.

This issue, at least for me, is not something that is consistent or area dependant. The game plays acceptably for a while then after a random amount of time this "bug" kicks in and it starts this 10sec-2sec-10sec-2sec cycle.

hmm 2 560 Ti with same issue.. everyone else ATI? Odd... I have SLI 480s... and it seems most older nvidia cards have fewer issues ie. (480, 460 etc.) Wonder if this is something to do with the new architecture... perhaps they didn't account for this while developing so newer vid cards are having issues?

Maybe the cause of your problem is different, my freeze is consistent from the moment I load my save till I hit Alt-F4 btw I noticed that we are mostly E series intel users in this thread.

Having the same problem here. E8400, GTX 460. The texture popping is getting some coverage because of the rageconfig fixes, but this isn't getting anything.

I had this exact same problem, and finally found a way to get the freezing to stop, and textures load faster but the game IS playable. Here's what I did

  • Removed all ATI drivers
  • Created the ."..\appdata\id software\rage" folder for cache "Windows 7"
  • Created the rageConfig.cfg file based on recommendations from the posts in these forums. I chose the mid grade option.
  • Installed Catalyst 11.6 Drivers
  • Disabled Triple buffering, Forced vSync, Let application decide for all other Gaming settings (in Catalyst Menus)

No other drivers have worked. The game is playable right but still has it share of graphics problems. Here's my specs

Core 2 Duo e6750 2.6ghz (oc'd at 3.2)
ATI 6870 1 GB
Intel SSD
Windows 7 x64
Catalyst 11.6

Same problem, this is not acceptable, worst game launch ever. I'm suprised we don't have a patch coming yet. It's only getting worse with EU release tomorow.

If by graphics problems you mean black texture squares it's not a fix, I played till I reached wellspring (catalyst AI disabled) and the black texture problem was limited to 1 black square every now and then, but when I enter wellspring the black textures are everywhere, the ground is completely black and I can't tell where are the doors or recognize the buildings I'm looking at, far too messed up.

Right since i created the thread i still cant get it to work at all - I must stress that this issue for me at least is constant from the moment the first asteroid cut scene, and no amount of disabling Cat AI etc solves or even makes a difference - Highly annoying if it is a CPU issue as it doesnt have problems in other games - Further to this a couple of Nvidia users are having the issue so its not exclusive to ATI cards which is good but it is the majority of them.
Whats annoying me - The EU release is an hour away and this forum and many others will filled to the brim with similar threads and most of the original ones will get overlooked and possible the issue will go unseen.

Right heres one, ive only seen a handful of people with this issue mainly on the steam forums, they have been ignored and nobody seems to care over there, So im here to see if anyone here also has or had it.
Basically as soon as the first cut scene is done and your in that pod thing, the game freezes for 15-20 secs then resumes for 1 sec, then freezes for etc, all while the GPU is sitting at 0% usage, and the CPU is hammered at 100%...Now there should be no problems with it all, before i even installed the game, i put the ATi performance drivers on (the new ones) so i can just about rule that out. As for anything else ive tried the config files, ending all open programs etc, to no effect. So for the moment while i can get into the game i cant actually move anywhere or do anything due to the constant hammering of the CPU causing the freezing. Anyone got any ideas at all?
Should add i monitor the GPU with MSi Afterbruner and the CPU was with task manager.

C2D at 3.4ghz - 6850 1gb @ 900/1145 - Win7 64bit - 4gb ram.

SAME PROBLEM

Tried Rageconfig.cfg, tried killing CCC and MOM and disabling CatalystAI tried 11.9 driver and Rage Performance driver, tried ALT+ENTER windowed mode, tried Game Booster 3 and Prio, and RadeonPro ID Spoofing.... nothing works =/

Are the devs ignoring this issue?
I'm wondering if they are just focusing on the texture problems and we're going to be ignored until "later".

Really svcks to have paid full price for a game that is completely unplayable in it's current form.

This is the most game murdering problem that needs to be addressed...

100% CPU, no GPU usage, minute RAM usage. I got 2gb ram and its using 40% without new drivers, 50% with rageconfig.cfg 60% with rageconfig.cfg and new drivers...(the rage performance one, 2nd one)

This should be priorrrrriiiiittyyyyyyyyyyyyyy I have no doubts that this game should run perfect on my PC because of the low quality compared to other games :D not to be rude, but technically speaking. ID5 doesn't compare with Cryengine3 or frostbyte so uh....... This game should have CPU usage of CoD4 or less. it should run as good as portal 2 !

I have a 5850 and I think I figured out what's the problem that causes this game to freeze and stutter.
If I turn the catalyst A.I. off manually, by modifying the Profiles.xml file located in C:\Users\Artins90\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE after closing the CCC and mom.exe with the task manager, once I restart the pc the game runs at 60 FPS stable at 1080p the problem is that some texture squares are corrupted, they are completely black, the game becomes playable but looks horrible in some areas. If I run the game with the Catalyst AI on, the black textures are fixed but for some reason my cpu reaches 99% making the game freeze for 30-40 seconds every 3 seconds which means you can't even move. I believe they offloaded some of the GPU work to the CPU through the catalyst AI, this workaround might work on i7's but for users with dual core CPU makes the game impossible to play.

E6400 OC@2.5ghz
2GB DDR2 ram
HD5850
Windows 7 32
I'm running the latest Ati RAGE hotfix not the broken one.

I have catalystAI disabled but it never removed the stutters/freeze

I did get black textures with it enabled (artifacting see through walls etc. crappy) but it wasn't playable. still lockup.

People upgrade their GPU before there CPU (too expensive etc. etc.) this game should be using all my GPU and some CPU and most RAM......... :( disheartening.

Trying to keep things going here, but i fear were going to be fighting a losing battle - There has to be more people with a similar issue, and hopefully with the EU release in 10 mins, this thread will quickly fill up with people with similar issues..Well thats my hope anyway.

Also if my CPU - GPU combo, can play most if not all the latest titles with reasonable quality and FPS compromises, why on earth is this using all my CPU and absolutly nothing of the GPU, plainly doesnt make any sense to me at least.

Posted this in another thread here about the stuttering.

Oook. Well I *was* having the stuttering issue.

This sounds crazy to me, (I'm a electrical engineer at a Fortune 500 company) but I swear all I did, was swap out my E8400 for a Q9550. I overclocked the Q9550 to 3.6GHz, made sure it was stable, and then I started Rage. And it worked, fine. 1920x1200 with the RageConfig file from FusedCore from the Steam Forums.

I did nothing with the drivers. I'm still running 11.9, didn't run the "Rage Fix drivers" either.

So in short:

I went from

Win7 64bit
E8400 @ 3.4GHz
8Gb DDR2-800
MSI TFIII 6950
Cat 11.9 drivers

with really bad stuttering, every 2-3 secs with maybe 2-3 seconds of being able to move to

Win7 64
Q9550 @ 3.6GHz
8Gb DDR2-800
MSI TFIII 6950
Cat 11.9 drivers

with no stuttering whatsoever. I swear that's the ONLY thing I changed.

What the hell?

Another thing I just noticed playing the game, my cores are no longer saturated and staying at 100%. They fluctuate around 20-75%, so I guess this is normal, where before, it clearly wasn't.

When i was trying to figure out the problems with my G15 keyboard (I forced the keyboard to work with the new ati drivers) i was watching the CPU and RAM usage on the keyboard LCD.

It went up to 100% and then froze, my Graphics is ordinary its just a ati 6850 but i have an OC'D i5 2500k @ 4.2ghz and it still manage to reach 100% cpu usage and freeze... i was gob smacked, thinking at first that we need a super computer to run this [censored] game.

I've disabled my G15 and it no longer happens.

So my point is, check ur peripherals see if they are playing up.

Same problem here with another E series CPU, perhaps that's the link although mine is an older one than most of yours overclocked, nothing I do is making any difference and even if the Catalyst AI disabling did work it's not really a fix if it just leads to further issues and bad textures I just wish they would actually acknowledge this problem so I know there's a fix coming.

Im not giving up on this, as i know this should run, if my computer can run crysis and bf3 reasonably well, then it should be able to handle this with ease..

Anyway. while doing a bit more testing i got task manager up and checked the rage.exe running and the priority for it was set to Low...Surely thats not right, and changing it crashed the computer and it didnt save the change and reverts back to low..Not sure how much of an effect that has but i cant imagine it being good.
