100% cpu - 0% GPU usage - Constant freezes.

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 11:31 am

Right heres one, ive only seen a handful of people with this issue mainly on the steam forums, they have been ignored and nobody seems to care over there, So im here to see if anyone here also has or had it.
Basically as soon as the first cut scene is done and your in that pod thing, the game freezes for 15-20 secs then resumes for 1 sec, then freezes for etc, all while the GPU is sitting at 0% usage, and the CPU is hammered at 100%...Now there should be no problems with it all, before i even installed the game, i put the ATi performance drivers on (the new ones) so i can just about rule that out. As for anything else ive tried the config files, ending all open programs etc, to no effect. So for the moment while i can get into the game i cant actually move anywhere or do anything due to the constant hammering of the CPU causing the freezing. Anyone got any ideas at all?
Should add i monitor the GPU with MSi Afterbruner and the CPU was with task manager.

I do have 100% CPU on my C2D desktop. I tried to play on notebook with i5-520 and it was smooth, like 30 fps. Well can't really say it's smooth, but better than stuttering, and at least playable.

Do you have OpenGL TripleBuffering turned off?

Yeah I have the same issue.

e8400
ati 5770
4 gigs ram

I recently discovered that starting a fresh game sometimes makes the freezing go away. I actually played for a full hour or so before it started freezing. I guess I was lucky :(

I've tried every combination of 11.9 drivers with and without the hotfix, TripleBuffering on / off, VSync on / off, the config file that's running around the Steam forums... still with the terrible freezing / stuttering. All this really svcks; as I remember when Doom 2 got released, and I bought it and have been an id Software fan since then, but this is really unacceptable.

However game is playable with 11.8 with about 30-40% GPU usage and small stuttering :(

E8400 @ 3.0GHz (not overclocked)
560Ti 1GB (285.38)
4GB Ram
Win7x64

Same problem here. 10sec freeze-up, then 1-2sec of fluid motion, 10sec freeze-up. Seems to start happening randomly after 2min to 1 hour of play. Restarting the game usually fixes it.

When the game's running, frame rate is acceptable. Interesting that we've all got E8400's, although it was a popular chip.

I'm forcing V-Sync, and am running with these launch options:

+cvaradd g_fov 20 +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024 +ik_enablesmoothing 0 +image_usecompression 0 +jobs_numthreads 2 +m_smooth 0 +m_rawinput 1 +fs_cachepath "C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\id software\rage" +vt_pageImageSizeUnique 8192 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 8192 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 8192

Pretty sure its got nothing to do with e8400. Its a console built game so obv two cores are not enough for it and because of the sad console built engine it doesnt even bother to use the GPU. This is one of the sadest engines out there.

Same issue. Though it only started after I updated drivers to try to fix texture issues. Tried all the drivers and the rageconfig file to no avail.

How do you enable triple buffering?

EDIT:
Never mind. I found it.

I turned on the Triple Buffering option in the CCC.. caused a crash at launch. I've never really messed around with the CCC before. Not sure what the catalyst a.i. is, let alone how to turn it off.

I will say that turning on vsync in the config file has helped with the tearing. Along with the other setting tweaks it's starting to look half decent.

Game runs smooth for ~15 seconds, than start freezes, textures loads slow/faster ( depends from cfg) but still visible

E8400 @ 3.0Ghz (not clocked)
2GB RAM
HD5750 1Gb
Win 7 Ultimate 32-b
Tried 10/4 drivers - the worst situation
Tried 11.9 driver - a little better, but not much
Tried 11.8 driver - best so far, get to 1. assignment then crash.
CPU load 100% constantly
GPU does not even get warrm.

Runs ok for 5 sec - freeze 10sec - run ok for 5 sec - freeze - and on and on....

Some configs help, but ultimately game crash totally after getting 1. assignment.

Totally unplayable.

Are the devs ignoring this issue?
I'm wondering if they are just focusing on the texture problems and we're going to be ignored until "later".

Really svcks to have paid full price for a game that is completely unplayable in it's current form.

Does your video cards support GPU transcoding??? If so make sure it is on.. if it is off... it may cause your CPU to work harder.

Probably because Doom 2 doesnt use OpenGL?

I have a 5850 and I think I figured out what's the problem that causes this game to freeze and stutter.
If I turn the catalyst A.I. off manually, by modifying the Profiles.xml file located in C:\Users\Artins90\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE after closing the CCC and mom.exe with the task manager, once I restart the pc the game runs at 60 FPS stable at 1080p the problem is that some texture squares are corrupted, they are completely black, the game becomes playable but looks horrible in some areas. If I run the game with the Catalyst AI on, the black textures are fixed but for some reason my cpu reaches 99% making the game freeze for 30-40 seconds every 3 seconds which means you can't even move. I believe they offloaded some of the GPU work to the CPU through the catalyst AI, this workaround might work on i7's but for users with dual core CPU makes the game impossible to play.
