I cannot see how anyone would not join the Stormcloaks

On the other side, you have Warhammer itself, which is an equally Grimdark, black fantasy universe where your life expectancy as a soldier is about fifteen minutes...when you're in the rear line.

Poor Guardsmen :( (They always die in both warhammers)

I think it really just comes down to your political philosophy, and how you view isolationist vs globalist ideals. Everything else is pretty much equal. You could go back and forth and find questionable things on each side, things you'd probably/hypothetically have to fix from the inside out. Neither one is perfect. Nothing is perfect. Nothing leads to a utopia. Utopia doesn't happen in real life, barely in games, and definitely not in TES.

Do you want a split from the empire and start Skyrim from a clean slate, or think the empire at least aspires to something good. I don't think it's about anything else at least. Not "FREEDOM!" or Talos or anything else. I think in the aftermath of the game's events, whatever side you pick, is going to try to support those things in it's own way. The real question is what do system you think builds a better foundation to fight back the Thalmor again.

I agree with you Korr .

For me me the Empire despite all its flaws , has brought civilization (culture , laws ) , progress (buildings , forts , ports , dams , bridges , roads etc ) , order and prosperity (trade ) for centuries in Tamriel .

IMO the fact it is now weak doesn't mean it cannot become strong again (under a new Emperor or leadership ) , therefore i prefer to contribute to fix it , rather than destroy it .

I think Skyrim , Hammerfell , Black Marsh etc .. being divided is a step back , for trade , for culture , for peace and security because the serious Thalmor threat requires other races to pool their ressources and strengths in order to defeat them . Isolation is what the Thalmor hope so that they can crush their enemies one by one .

i also believe Nords were always involved with the Empire since it was created , and that without Nords , there is no strong Empire .

-that even though the Aldmeri Dominion "lost the battle" and gained zero territory in the Great War, that this loss triggered the Civil War now raging across Skyrim?
The civil war was triggered by the Thalmor, when they captured Ulfric and brain washed him into starting his rebellion. The Imperials were (and are) content with letting Talos worship continue in secret, waiting for the day they're strong enough to start another war with the Dominion.

-that the Imperial's impotent leadership of the empire was what caused 5 of it's 9 provinces (i.e. Valenwood, Elyswer, Morrowind, The Black Marsh, and Hammerfell to secede from the empire? And now it apparently seems to be Skyrim's turn--starting to see a pattern here?
You got that a bit backwards, actually. At the start of the novels (Infernal City/Lord of Souls), the entire Empire was in shambles. It was only Cyrodiil that was under Titus I's control, and even then only barely. Since that time, they were able to get back Skyrim, Hammerfell, and High Rock. Valenwood being taken by the Domninion was a surprise to everyone, and it was done by a lot of killing. Elsweyr was put under extremely adverse circumstances (the moons disappeared for two whole years; besides the event itself, the moons are incredibly important to Khajiiti culture, so when they came back and the Thalmor claimed responsibility for restoring them, they were putty in the Dominion's hands). Morrowind left because it blew up. Black Marsh "left", even though they were only ever part of the Empire in name only. Hammerfell left, but eventually came back into the fold, and only left again because of the Concordat (which everyone knows isn't going to last).

-that even if the Imperials win--regardles of what side the mighty Dovahkiin chooses to champion---the resulting "unified empire" will be so incredibly weak and unstable, that the Aldmeri Dominion will end up "wining the war"? Because if this comes to pass, the balance of power in Tamriel will shift directly into Aldmeri hands?
If a unified Empire can't take on the Dominion, then a split Empire definitely can't. In which case, it doesn't matter who you support, and everyone's f'd anyway. Although that conclusion is questionable as the Thalmor see either side winning as bad for them, so it's likely the Dominion is in no shape to take on the Empire and Nords, whether they're under one banner or two (or three, if Hammerfell wants in on some more Elf killing).

Have you had the pleasure of meeting any of the Thalmor Justicars in your travels while adventuring on the roads lately?
Yes, they make pretty good pincushions. ;)

The Thalmor don't want anyone to win the civil war. They want it to keep going. Ending the war weakens the Thalmor position. Your choice possibly amounts to either weakening the Thalmor a lot, or weakening them even more.

This simply doesn't wash. The empire was founded by a Nord, so you could even argue that it was the Nords who originated those things, but even that is a stretch in Tamriel where the ancient cultures were more advanced and the "modern" ones in relative decline. Anyway simply imposing their way of life and their "order" on native cultures isn't in and of itself a virtue.

Too bad. Skyrim can be strong as an independent nation, and Cyrodiil can do the same without having pretensions of ruling everyone else.

Well... no army's soldiers always believe everything they're out there fighting for. Most soldiers (in a civil war or otherwise) are there for reasons they can't mostly begin to articulate. And they just follow orders once they're there.
I was responding to someone who said the Stormcloaks think Ulfric is the savior of Skyrim.

Like I said in my previous post (which you chose not to continue discussing I'm afraid), the idea that the Empire is forcing its culture and order onto Skyrim is completely incorrect.

The only part of Nord culture that has been removed is Talos worship, as it was part of the terms of the White-Gold Concordat. It's not that the Empire wants to impose the ban, it has no choice - otherwise the Thalmor come in and whoop ass again before presumably being pyrrhicly defeated like before. As it is, the supposed blanket ban on Talos worship has many, many gaps. It is more the Thalmor Justiciars who enforce the ban as compared to the Empire - the Shrine to Talos in Whiterun is still standing, and Tullius brushes off Rikke's prayer to Talos at the execution of Ulfric Stormcloak.

As far as I know, the governing of the Holds is still up to the Jarls - even after Stormcloak Holds have been taken, Nords still replace the gaps in command. The Nord way of life is still as it is. The only major changes that I noticed in the way of life for cities is that Argonians were let back into Windhelm, so unless racism/neglect of social problems is part of Nord ways of life, I don't see any evidence of what you mean. And before we launch back into that whole Argonian/Dunmer issue, I suggest you read my response to your post again.
