Concerning the small patch through Steam today:

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 4:41 am

Logic and a cursory inspection showed that the LAA patch was removed (and not added by Bethesda as a default!).

So those of you who use it need to put it back in to your new .exe.

EDIT for those who don't go beyond the first post!!!!: WARNING: You can no longer use the 4GB patch. Steam disabled launching the game without Steam / with any modification to the executable file.

Thanks. I was wondering if that removed it. Wonder what it fixed?

EDIT: I found out that you can no longer use the 4GB patch with Skyrim now. You will get Error 51 no matter what you do. Apparently all this patch fixed was that you can no longer play Skyrim without starting Steam.

Ah, won't that be popular among the Steam-haters out there?

Of course, since they disable it, they probably won't get the update, anyway, but they'll probably want the patch at some point.

so what happens now that we can't use the LAA patch? There aren't any workarounds whatsoever?

Came back here to point out that the 4gb patch is no longer usable, but someone beat me to it. Thanks Mistress Rarity!

No workarounds at this time. Ask Steam nicely to add an option for that purpose I guess, the game won't launch with an altered .exe file.

....seriously? That's really dumb. Just shoving a middle finger to those of us who want to use the actual capabilities of our computers...

Have you guys tried starting stream in offline mode? It persists even after computer restarts (well, it asks if you want to start Steam in online mode, but you don't have to). That way the newly applied LAA patch won't get overwritten.

Even after reverted back to the original exe before the patch, it continued to crash. The only way to fix the problem was re-apply the LAA patch.
Looks like there's going to be problems later on.

Have any of you considered that this might be because the LAA patch hasn't been updated to deal with the patched executable?

honestly thats getting ridiculous... whats the idea of that nonsense? screw legit users even more by not allowing us to use a fix that should have been part of the game in the first place???? it wont stop any pirate anyway, they dont have to use that [censored] steam anyway
so instead of fixing the game they intentionally make it slower????? WTH BETH??? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND???? :swear: :swear: :swear:

Ravenholme I'm afraid you are unaware of that which you speak. the LAA patch does not need to be updated. those of us that patch our exe manually also experience this. Way to go Bethesda/Steam! Way to F us in the A! I was getting crashes every 20-30 minutes before I made the game LAA.

You can patch your own exec using CFF explorer, the reason LAA is not enabled by default is that on some systems it leads to memory clash and crash.

It's the TESV.exe that needs the patch, starting the game using TESV.exe does not cause problems with Steam.

Its a sad day when paying customers are treated like this, but the only solution right now is to make a LAA patch for the cracked EXE that bypasses Steam and to use that. In other words, Steam is forcing us to pirate our own paid for game :brokencomputer:

It changes a single byte in the EXE header that is common to all Windows executables. It works on every program without having to know anything about how it works.

So I'm going to get home, and Skyrim is going to be a memory-starved, laggy mess again? Not cool, Beth, not cool.

In a nutshell yes, it lets the exe know memory is available above the 32 bit limit, the problem is on 32 bit systems with less than 3 gig of memory it can cause problems, enabling LAA by default would have this forum filling up with complaints of crashes on some systems, so they play it safe and leave it disabled.

You DO realize you are trying to bypass this game's DRM, right?

It's only natural that when it becomes apparent that people are bypassing the security features preventing this game from being stolen, they create a patch to try to stop that, you know...

Besides, Steam doesn't slow down your game. These complaints about Steam are all nonsensical gripes.

I think he was referring to the lack of the LAA patch "slowing down" the game (at least negatively effecting performance for those who would have found it useful).

It is a fair complaint that this simple performance enhancer for those on systems that would show a benefit is now blocked. If they're going to block minor changes to the executable header they should offer a version pre-patched for LAA.

I'll admit that I've actually found the steam web browser quite useful, since I get poor performance outside of full screen. This way I can use the internet without Alt+Tab.

Was crashing every 30-60min and getting missing textures without LAA. Since I patched have played for days with zero crashes or texture issues so not great news..
