Concerning the small patch through Steam today:

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 10:08 am

Okay, I've gone ahead and made some changes to the source (COMPLETELY UNTESTED!), the source and compiled version are here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MBBKAPTJ

Anyone that can test this please let me know if it works. It relies on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Bethesda Softworks\Skyrim registry key pointing to your game directory. If it doesn't exist, the tool will probably give an error. Also, please use with caution as I haven't tested it and have no idea if it works or not. Make a backup of your TESV.exe before you use it!

I don't know it this works for other people for some reason, but it fails to even find the game for me. I went into your source to change it to match the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Skyrim key which is how mien version of the enabler works, and it still won't find my game.

Here is a link to the binaries and source for mine: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?tyndp4bn6p4tc1f

Running Vista x64, so I have the proper registry setup as expected... by all appearances the 4gb workaround is working. Typing this from inside the steam web browser... Thank you ChairGraveyard!

I have no issue whatsoever starting steam in offline mode every time I restart. Never have to sign in or anything. It asks when it starts and I just tell it to stay in offline mode.

That's interesting. It never works that way for me. I wonder what the difference is in our two cases.

This is what i see when i look at the running TESV.4gb file

as you can see it shows the LAA flag in the top part
What program did you use to modify your exe?

Well the game runs fine with your 4gb enabler, and it shows TESV.4gb running in taskmanager, and when i check that file i can see it's LAA flag is set....however my game is only using 1gb of ram atm so it's hard to tell if it's actually working...haha
Thanks for testing, this is good news (hopefully, assuming it's *really* working).

I'm downloading currently. If this is actually a fully functional port of the 4gb steam workaround from FO3 it needs it's own thread.

This post just promoted me to Curate. :)
If we can confirm it's all working correctly, I'm going to clean up the code (rename stuff so it doesn't have variables named fallout etc. everywhere) and make a new thread as well as stick it on SkyrimNexus.

Awesome!

He used my port of MonochromeWench's FO 4GB launcher that I've uploaded here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MBBKAPTJ

Dunno. I reinstalled somewhat recently and installed a fresh copy of steam when I installed skyrim, then after registering the game, immediately went into the menu and selected offline mode. I have not had a single login prompt since.

And, because of that, never actually got the new patch. I haven't used the LAA patch yet anyway, and have had no real issues, with the exception of some sudden CTDs with no error messages (silent crash, I guess).

Edit: reinstalled windows. Had a hdd die on me.

Wait a minute, i was using the old unprotected exe to test and that one worked fine.
But now i just downloaded the new exe from steam but when i try to use your 4gb enabler with it, it will start the launcher and then run TESV.exe and not the TESV.4gb file, i guess since steam forces it to start the launcher :/

Edit: i am using a Lister plugin called "Fileinfo" for a program called "Total Commander" that will show info like that.

Edit2: It seems it only runs the launcher if you run fnv4gb.exe when steam is not running, so if you have steam running and then run fnv4gb.exe it will launch the TESV.4gb normaly, sorry about that

You need to activate Steam to use the .exe? Strange... I don't.

But I still downloading the Patch. Let's see after it.

He's using the workaround posted by ChairGraveyard, as am I. It doesn't directly modify the TESV executable, it essentially injects the LAA functionality after launch.

Ah thanks for the head's up! To anyone else using the launcher, make sure Steam is running, I guess.

Is this going to break the ability to use a Script Extender? I'm guessing not since FONV had a similar setup?
No, I just updated SKSE so it works with the encrypted version. The only content in the patch was the encryption wrapper, so the port was trivial.

But do we actually know if it works or if it just shows it's enabled? you'd think it works if it says it's LAA enabled.

Proud to say that I've had Steam disabled ever since I activated my game through Steam. The only thing I can see needing to update Skyrim for in the not too distant future is for mods requiring the script extender, and I don't see that happening just yet. For the meantime, I'll just make a backup of my game file and happily continue on with Steam disabled.

I've tested ChairGraveyard's version on 2 pcs each running Win7 x64 Ultimate and neither one will find the game properly.

IT does appear as if the fix works. Showing TESV.4gb. Whether or not it has an allocated 4GB of memory, I can't say for sure. It's sad that we have to start the game like this, but what can you do...

Unless you want to test it more, you will probably want to upload your port to http://www.skyrimnexus.com/ eventually, Chair. Easier to find it there than on MegaUpload.

I've tested ChairGraveyard's version on 2 pcs each running Win7 x64 Ultimate and neither one will find the game properly.

Does the registry key I mentioned exist? What error does it give?

Also, as to whether or not we know it's working (assuming it's running TESV.4gb) there's not really any way I know of. I've never seen the game even get close to going over 2GB, personally.

Aye, as soon as we know whether it's working or not I'm going to put a cleaned up version on the Nexus. I'm going through the code right now and renaming stuff. Going to rename the source files and the output files (sk4gb.exe and sk4gb_helper.dll instead of the current names) as well as change the icon before I upload it though.

I'd also like to ensure that the registry key I'm using in the code is standard, as right now there's no way to specify a different key. To that end, anyone that can report what their registry key is would be super helpful. Right now I'm looking at making it so that you can specify a registry key from the command line.

I'm having the same trouble. 32 bit win 7, and when running fnv4gb.exe, it says it cannot find the file. Does the .exe need to be run from a specific directory?

People may think it's a placebo, but if you want to use HD textures this was the only way. Otherwise the game crashed after playing it a while.

Yea it's struggling to reach 1gb for me atm, but i imagine with some heavy HD texture mods it could climb quickly
