Concerning the small patch through Steam today:

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 6:25 am

I just took a look at the source code for the FNV4GB tool, and it looks like it *might* be a straight-forward port in order to get it working for Skyrim (basically just a matter of changing the names of some stuff, like the EXE name, the Steam AppID it needs and the registry location it looks at). I'm currently at work so I can't really test this, but if someone can give me the standard registry key, I can make the changes and stick a compiled version up somewhere (with source, in case people are paranoid/want to recompile it just to be sure).

I'll also need the proper Steam AppID if anyone knows what it is (I remember seeing a post about using it to launch TESV.exe directly and still get achievements, but I don't remember what thread it's in).

I love how pirate Skyrim is superior to Steam Skyrim.

Well played Steam. Well played.

Is this going to break the ability to use a Script Extender? I'm guessing not since FONV had a similar setup?
I don't think so since the script extender doesn't modify the exe. It just loads dll's int mem and tells the game it can use them. As far as I know. Perhaps the devs of SKSE\OBSE can explain it better.
On topic: This patch was so useless. If you have pirate version, you aren't using steam so no effect. Legal use=[censored] up.

Can you shoot a link to this source? Depending, I may be able to take care of this and properly test it since I'm at home.

I've blocked Steam from any further patches, my game has been stable up to now with very few bugs, a new patch is not worth losing LAA currently.

It's quite sad the torrents with Steam removed Skyrim are better than actually buying the game. I have my game permanently offline for now, and won't update unless there's significant fixing, and a solution to a 4GB RAM patch.

So does this patch mean that we can no longer just click the exe to run the game? We have to start steam now (even if in offline mode)?

Yes, clicking TESV.exe now opens up the launcher which in turn opens Steam.

Although it probably won't do a single thing, I suggest we at least voice our opinions through the company email.

Watch as it doesn't do anything though!

Get over it. There is nothing wrong with Steam.

Can one of those that says the exe can still be patched please give me a step-by-step process for doing this now? I'd prefer to leave Steam online, if possible. And I'd also prefer to run the game without crashing every 30 minutes.

Considering that you are forced to run steam to run the game, and you are forced to either update or not get fixes makes it so that steam IS an issue. If we didn't have to run one program through another, this wouldn't be an issue. Besides, I know people who have already pirated the game from a legal copy, without patching or any modification, so it's not like steam is actually stopping any pirating.

Besides, some of us run 64 bit system with more than 2 gb of ram, and want to use what we actually have. Your insistence that we should just "get over it" not only seems like the statement of ignorance, but also makes me think you don't have the issue and therefore don't care simply for that reason. I don't have any issues with the update, but that's not the point. Some are.

So get over it. Steam is flawed, skyrim's drm is flawed, and there is no amount of handwaving is going to change that.

Still a damn good game.

Registry (W7 x64) HKLM/Software/Bethesda Softworks/Skyrim
Hope it helps, would be great if you can make it work with Skyrim, with NV it works perfect.

You DO realize you are trying to bypass this game's DRM, right?

It's only natural that when it becomes apparent that people are bypassing the security features preventing this game from being stolen, they create a patch to try to stop that, you know...
According to MGE UPS SYSTEMS INC v. GE CONSUMER AND INDUSTRIAL INC et al., bypassing DRM on software you own is not illegal. The appellate court upheld this ruling.

Also, Steam in no way prevents piracy, and you have no idea what you're talking about.

Hmm well a simple workaround would be to have it take the directory as an argument. Although Dukov82 notes that there's the HKLM key for it.

This should not be a problem for SKSE. We do not modify the exe on disk at all - we do it all of our work in memory, after the exe has already been loaded.

I also don't have that regkey but i did find some other ones:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\72850

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Bethesda Softworks\Skyrim

Maybe one of those will help

Do either of these have an "Installed Path" key? Or any sort of key that gives the location of the game exe?

ok guys I just retooled the fonv 4gb patch and I get the same error still, it won't work to simply port that. I'll upload the file with source somewhere if anyone wants to try and make sure I did it right, but I still have the app load error.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Bethesda Softworks\Skyrim

gives the install path.

Strange, the regkeys of all my Bethesda Games (Falllout 3, Fallout NV, Skyrim) are in HKLM/Software/Bethesda Softworks

yes, install path is there for all three.
