Constant Crash to Desktops

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 10:09 am

I'm only getting crashes per 2 hours' play, which is well within my normal game tolerance. However, when it crashes I get a "runtime error" - I can't remember the full message, but it's something C-related. Has anyone else been getting this popup after it crashes to desktop?

Normally with me, that indicates a driver issue, but in that case the game wouldn't load up at all, whereas Skyrim's fine for up to 2 hours.

I haven't yet tried disabling autosave.

I just got my Skyrim to work like a charm.

Windows 7 64 bit users should use this tool: http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php
Also turn Anti Aliasing off in the launcher of Skyrim and force it through your graphic card settings.

This worked for me, I cant tell for others, just hoping it's going to work for some.

This also has worked for me so far, played for about 2 hours and even walked/run up entire 7000 steps to High Hrgothar or whatever its called. Besides the bugs, this game really is epic and of course most of the bugs will be fixed over time. Even Oblivion had many bugs when it first launched.

This post on the nexus forums suggests it's shutting itself down.

Is the turning off of the auto save function, or turning off in-game steam community function working for anyone?

I forgot to mention that I had did this as well.

I ve seen other posts on here about crashing before it even starts, well thats also my problem ,everyone says the audio change fixes it, not mine ive tried everything and cant get the game to start. Running ati 5870 with current drivers, i dont know if this matters , im using a g35 headset and my audio sttings will only go to 16 bit 44.1 not 24 bit. I want to play the game so bad. I have the cd version. Would appreciate the help.

sorry to hear that, ive used both headste and 5.1 surround logitech with the sound fix and the game worked fine for me after. i also reloaded the most recent version of my videocard too which i already had but idk if that actualy masde any difference

yo every bethesda game has the worst issues when it launches and i dont find that legit they need to just not release without proper testing and beta. ive called support on every bethesda game ive bought since oblivion because i had launch problems at start, i just think thats so sloppy after everything they've put into these amazing games

I have a save game where I can consistently repeat the crash. The context:

- I'm outside, with Lydia as a follower.

- I have several quests started. I've killed the first dragon and gotten its power, along with that first shout from Bleak Falls and used it a couple of times. I have not been to the greybeards yet.

- According to the map, I'm slightly northwest / up from the Rannveig's Fast marker.

- At the start of the loaded game, I'm near the side of a mountain and a dragon is circling above the mountain. If I move forward about 10 steps and look up at the dragon, I can literally count down from 3... 2... 1 and crash - every single time.

- If I don't move and wait for the dragon to circle around a bit more, it doesn't crash right away and I can actually get pretty close to him and even start fighting him, but it crashes at various points of that battle, usually right after he takes off after fighting on the ground for a bit.

- The dragon's name is "Dragon" (generic creator rather than a named one like the first dragon).

I've tried windowed mode, I've tried reducing effects down from Ultra to High, also down to Low, I've tried setting the sound to 24 bit 44.1k, I've turned off Steam in-game community, I've tried the LAA 4GB patcher, I've updated to the latest beta drivers, installed all system updates, rebooted, closed all other apps, and a couple of other things that I can't recall right now, but am still getting that same consistent crash.

Some other general specs and notes:
1. I'm redirecting the "skyrim" folder in Steam to my SSD (though switching back to the standard, non-redirected/linked data files still had the same results).
2. I'm running a single EVGA GTX 470 on one monitor at 1920x1200, Windows 7 64-bit, 12gb RAM with a pagefile on the same SSD drive.
3. I've had a few random crashes earlier in the game.
4. Whenever I Alt-Tab out of the game, and Alt-Tab back in, I have to do it twice. The first time just shows me the windowed frame with a black interior. If I Alt-Tab back to something else and then back to Skyrim, it goes properly back to full-screen mode.

Not sure if I can share my save game and have it work for anyone else if anyone else wants to try it? Send me a PM if you want to give it a go.

Do these crashes occurr in windowed mode? The only way I got around constantly crashing to desktop in bonechill passage was playing in winow mode.

yea bonechill was where i had my constant crashes. i couldnt go 4 feet without it closing. but i tried window mode and it worked and i killed the drag and got the word lol. now im going to try going back to whiterun to see if it keeps doing it since it hadnt crashed at all in about 20 hours of gameplay except for when i went inside bonechill passage
