Constant Crash to Desktops

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 9:17 am

Anyone else experiencing this - you're playing and then the game just closes? No explanation, it just randomly closes and you're back to desktop?

It's unplayable in its current state.

I have had this issue since release. It usually happens between 15-30 minutes of gameplay. I noticed that the textures tend to screw up when it's about to happen.

You don't need to provide any help, it's a game issue - I've already tried everything (believe me, I know how to troubleshoot issues - I come from a PC/Network technician background).

OK, but you are then asking if other people also experience completely random CTDs, that could come from a plethora of different issues that have absolutely no relation to your situation, so your point is??

How are we supposed to provide information related to this when there is no information given to us about the crash? There is not related thing in-game that causes the crash, it's random. There is no errors.

You could start by providing very basic information about the system you are playing on.

Post your DXdiag for example.

There is no fix, I have tryed everything, even the "If you're crashing to the desktop, try this workaround
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Sound 2. In the Playback tab, right click on Speakers (or whatever has a green tick next to it), then click Properties 3. In the advanced tab on this new window, select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality) in the drop down menu" Fix.

Untill Bethesda produce a new patch we get a crash fest.....

yep, happens to me too, the difference is that the image freezes but the game goes (sounds and actions go on) on until I go in a menu, whet it promptly exits the game.

You need to post the rest also - that is where the important parts are (esp. sound and video devices)

Game is just crashing to desktop for me, too. Very fast for a crash, really. It's just there, then gone, no freezing, no hiccup, then it's at the desktop. Happened a couple times in the intro, which I ignored. Then I went along on my own into a cave and I literally cannot progress because I take 2-3 steps and crash.

I have had it happen once so far think i'd been playing for an hour or so, no noticeable issues leading up to a crash other than slight drop in framerate.

One thing i hope bethesda might do, along with fixing bugs of course, is add in some kind of error log feature. It helps them in identifying issues common or otherwise and also helps modders when trying to find issues.

It was one of the things that i loved in Stalker, mod didn't work or crashes check the log and you could see if it was easily fixed or not. Game crashing for unknown check error log.
Compared to fallout/nv. Game crashes, why? who knows? load up see if it happens again, if it does check forum and hope its easily fixed and not a corrupted game.

Come on bethesda save yourselves the guesswork and provide an error catcher feature so we can give better bug reports.

I did see one anomalous entry so far:

"Page File: 2980MB used"

That is literally TRIPLE the size it should be on any PC intended for use playing games.

Regarding the DxDiag reports, all you have to do is add the spoiler tags, front and back, and hide it. Or else start from here:

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon X2 / Pentium D / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed: ?.? Ghz
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Win7, Vista ?
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024 ? )
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD, so please answer which of them you have)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 6670 / Geforce GTS 450
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.??
. . (please use the numbers, and dates, *not* the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Driver IDs:
Sound Card Model:

(And this is only for the raw hardware & driver variations. Potential software conflicts are far more likely to be game play problems, and developers cannot test for all possible program loads.)

P. S. Please use every day business style paragraph breaks, punctuation, and spelling.

Yes. I've gone through the basic troubleshooting problems found on the net, to no avail. Signed up here because I'm now on my fourth in-game crash. Exactly as you describe.

I assume you are running in SLI? If yes, try to run it on one video card, just for trooubleshooting purposes to see if you still get CTDs.

I know Oblivion had some issues with codecs, so another try could be to uninstall Nero (and also PowerDVD if it does not help), to see if this could help.

I have had 3 random crashes in the time I was playing (about 12 hours), I suspect there are a few bugs that will need to be patched in the coming days.

Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-2500 CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti (X2, running in SLI mode)

No I do not use SLI. Yes I do have the most recent driver (non beta).
I also have 6GB DDR3 tri-channel memory and two LCD monitors. I do a lot of multi-tasking.

Then there maybe an issue with your graphic card, as it is listed twice?

That could possibly be due to the fact that I have to monitors?

EDIT:
Yes that's exactly why because the stated video cards match the monitors resolutions. I only have one video card with two monitors.

Could you try to unplug one monitor, then run the game to see it the problem persists. If it does, then do a new dxdiag (still with only one monitor) and then post it again.

I will try that next and post results in a few minutes once I'm done uploading this video.
