Cutie Mark Crusaders and You

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 10:29 pm

Hello! I'm posting this on a few different forums because I'm interested in studying how members interact with the forum staff on different sites. If you would please answer a few simple questions for me, I would be very grateful.

In general, do you like the Moderators here?

I think they're all right. The ones I have discussed with in the Mass effect threads appear to be good people to speak your mind with*.

Do you know any of them personally? Have you met any in real life?

Not that I'm aware of. If I did, I didn't know it.

Would you like to have more or less contact with them?

If they were to pop on to XBL and want to play some ME3 multiplayer, then sure. Otherwise the current settlement is satisfactory.

Anything else you wish to add?

*I will admit that when I first came onto these forums, I had a mental stigma towards moderators (particularly the ones of Duelistgroundz), where for any number of stupid reasons (be it you have conflicting views with users with 1,000+ posts and they just don't like you, to you just happened to make a moderator look bad because you raised a valid argument, you could be suspended or banned. I saw one time where there was someone talking about how he deeply disliked One-Piece and the head guy of the forum, Rei, had posted a few down from that in response to someone calling out an impending ban on the 1st kid, that he actually CONSIDERED IT (Rei is a huge One-Piece fan).

So you could imagine my nervousness to debate with a moderator over Mass Effect 3. It also didn't help that this forum uses the EXACT template as Duelistgroundz. I will say that I'm happy to know now that the moderators here are actually likeable people, which helps make my days better. All in all, I'm very pleased to be a part of this community.

Love 'em, always have. It's hard to find a combination of moderator + reasonable and nice, but BGSF has them in droves. There are a few new ones I haven't seen much of, but I'm sure they're no different.

Every other forum I have been on is either a slew of insults, or banned for breathing. HereI have had a few knuckle raps without warning, which I would call reasonable and fair, so yeah, I like them.

Don't know 'em, don't want to meet 'em, same attitude I have to most of the rest of our species.

As above.

I like the old ones and the way they moderate. That includes ex-mods such as tegger, but also Freddo, summer, etc. Also had good contact with them in the past.

I agree with Third Eye's comment about the current style of moderation though. Don't know if Gstaff's arrival caused it, but it certainly has changed in such a way that individual mods judge by their own standards within the framework of the rules. While that can be a good thing, it requires superb people skills and a lot of feeling within the community. If I may be frank, some mods lack these things, thus making their actions seem hypocritical at times. Rohugh especially catches my eye in this regard.

However, it's just an internet forum. I thank all of the mods for the time they are willing to put into it, despite the abuse they get at regular intervals. In some ways, my own post can be considered as such, I guess.

Thank you for all the answers!

This was following a discussion between myself and a friend, on how much people's perceptions of authority figures are affected by how well they know said authority figures. So I decided a small test was in order. Thanks again for your cooperation!

Typed, double spaced, size 12, Times New Roman font.

Edit: Forget Times New Roman, Wingdings would make a more intelligent paper.

Indeed. Moderation here can, at times, seem whimsical to the point of farce. Unfortunately, any real criticism of moderator strategy is treated as a warnable offence, so there is precisely zero transparency or accountability.

I think in my case it's not really so much how well I know them but rather how much the figure in question emphasises their authority: if someone gets too authoritarian on me it generally rubs me the wrong way, but I (generally) have no problems sticking to the rules if asked nicely.

Yes. They are wonderful people.

Do you know any of them personally? Have you met any in real life?
No

I'm fine with the way things are now. I would happily have coffee with any of them though.

Anything else you wish to add?
The Eisenhower interstate system requires that one mile in every five must be straight. These straight sections are usable as airstrips in times of war and other emergencies.

Moderators here are WAY better on here the other forums I've been apart of, bar one*. So yes, I like them.

Do you know any of them personally? Have you met any in real life?
No. Or at least I don't think so.

Would you like to have more or less contact with them?
I could do with a good e-spanking every now and again. :hubbahubba:

Anything else you wish to add?
I like the mods because they're pretty laid back but I feel like the way the rules are enforced are completely inconsistent.

I haven't participated in many other forums but I've had bad personal experiences with mods on 2 other forums and I've seen a mod behaving horribly on 1 other forum (though he was behaving like a horrible human being, I don't know if he was actually reasonable with warnings and what not). Pretty sad that of the 6 forums (well 8, but 2 of which were very small and not really moderated at all) I've joined, half of them had terrible mods. On those 'bad' forums it's probably not all the mods that svck, or even half, but when you give an [censored] some power he runs amok and can really spoil what would have been a great forum.

*The one with the best mods is great. They're very active in the community and feel more like members and brethren than big looming authority figures. But they also get the job done. Hell, just yesterday I had a post of mine deleted but I don't even care because I totally saw where they were coming from, even if my post might not have technically been against the rules.

In general the mods do a good job, but are sometimes inconsistent - i.e., a thread will get 20 or 30 posts and then 1 mod will lock it for reasons having to do with the original subject, that is, not because of flaming or other badness being posted in the threads. And this was after maybe a half dozen mods have already had a chance to see the thread.

I have also seen examples of "knee-jerk" locks, where the mod doesn't seem to have actually read the post, but locks it because it has some 'keyword' that triggers the lockdown behaviour (not talking about obscene words either).

And while pms to the mods are generally answered the same day, this is not always the case.

1. Yes, I have said before that the moderators here and the moderators over at Serebii and NarutoFan (When I used to be a Pokemon/Naruto fanatic) are pretty level headed and fair. Sure I have seen and been involved into a few things and get warnings, but some I agree with and some I don't but I have been through worse and any time I needed help or ran into an issue, they are there. Sure I have some negative and positive opinions of some of the mods but I know they have both negative and positive opinions about me, which is fine since opinions are opinions, just so long as they are civil!

2. Nope

3. Longest I have seen no moderators on was like 3 hours AFAIK so they are easy to contact 24/7

4. Rohugh is best pony!

It may be considered against forum rules in the sense, "we don't allow discussion of moderators actions in public", which this post is likely to draw out.
There have been a handful of threads talking about moderation, which were interesting discussions rather than "ZOMG that bear guy banz me he suxx!" type of threads.

1. Yes, even the ones that eat weird things like marmite and ammonia chloride candy.
Don't forget the yummy ammonia treated pink slime!

Yes as well as in particular.

Just because a thread has been sitting around for a while doesn't mean mods have seen it. It also isn't uncommon for us to discuss a borderline thread before its locked, which will generally result in several mods viewing a thread before anyone goes in to lock it.

I have also seen examples of "knee-jerk" locks, where the mod doesn't seem to have actually read the post, but locks it because it has some 'keyword' that triggers the lockdown behaviour (not talking about obscene words either).
If a thread topic looks problematic, particularly if the thread has also been reported, it's pretty common to lock it and then read through it. If it is a problem better to nip it in the butt rather than letting it get further out of control while we're reading it. And if it isn't a problem it's easy enough to unlock after a few minutes.

Yes the moderators are great, I love the mods. Though it is my duty as a norwegian citizen to dislike Freddo, because he's swedish, just like it's his duty to dislike me.

Do you know any of them personally? Have you met any in real life?

No not really, I have Rohugh on skype though, but I haven't spoken with him in a while.

Would you like to have more or less contact with them?

Well, not less. I'm fine with the amount of contact I have with them at the moment. I wouldn't mind more though, as long as it's not contact because rules were broken.

Anything else you wish to add?

No not really.

Apologies in advance if any of this is against forum rules.

- I like most of the moderators on this board. They do a very good job keeping this place organised and civil.

- Rohugh is in our Skype group! Haven't met any mods in real life though, at least I don't think so.

- I wouldn't mind getting to know the mods a little bit more, most of them seem like good guys, and the few I've talked with were very nice.

- No!

I like the mods. They keep the place clean and sanitary, but let it still have a sense of humor. I've never met any of them in real life, but part of me wants to get them all in a room with some of the most famous trolls and spammers and see the storm. Oh, and I'm friends with a few of them on steam.
