Death houndVampire raids are ruining the game.

I'm still planning to get Dawnguard when it's finally released on PS3/PC but I just know this random vamp attack business is going to drive me nuts.

I think the best way to change this would be to have NPC's run from vamps and let us hire mercs/Dawnguard to patrol cities/towns. Surely that would help satisy both camps.

I don't mind if Beth modifies it, but im afraid that they would modify it to much and make it extremely easy (like having important NPC's like shopkeepers, etc, respawn if killed). And i wouldn't be suprised if Beth caved in and stopped all NPC's from dying, or at least made it so ALL NPC's (including important ones) respawned after death, because it seems that some people on this forum just don't like the idea of NPC's dying by vampire attacks.

Of course that would probably effect dragon attacks as well. After all, if beth made it so NPC's can either......

1. Not die

or

2. Die but be able to be respawn (which takes away the incentive to fight vampire attacks because you know the NPC's are never really threatened)

Then dragon attacks as well will be loss some of there touch. Who cares if a dragon attacks a villege, doesn't matter if it kills some guards or even a shopkeer, they will just come back anyways.

Or how about:

3. Remove random vampire attacks from cities. Restrict the attacks to the wilderness.

That seems like a fair compromise to me. No risk of NPCs dying, and people who like the feature can still keep it.

That was my suggestion but then I realised it's not an ideal solution as it would not fix Nefarious One's problem with people being attacked outside.

My previous outdoors example was just one of many.
1. I once entered Solitude and the Guard to my left mentioned how these vampire raids are getting out of control.
2. I readied my axe and looked around for the attack.
3. Nothing.
4. Having advanced to the fisherman's market and finding no targets, I climbed the ramp to the smithy and found...
- Beirand dead at the upper platform
- Gisli dead on the walkway to the Blue Palace
- Not one guard or vamp/hound corpse. Not one.

Two dead Solitude npc's, one of whom was the smithy merchant. No rhyme nor reason. No way to intervene or even witness.
These instances just don't add to my gameplay. They take from it.

i dont want the attacks in the cities either, if they keep them in the wilderness they can triple the amount of vampires attacking for all i care
JUST KEEP THE NPC'S SAFE!!!

Some people still like attacks inside the city though.

I think the problem for the most part is the spawn distance. Currently the spawn distance is bloody high, so the vamps can spawn on the other side of a town. This was a big probem for me in Fallout 3 as well. I would have important npcs, traders etc being wiped out absolutely miles away and never know it happened.

If the spawn distance was set to lower, that's fine but it results in the vamps "popping in" basically appearing right in front of your eyes which looks bad.

The ideal solution would be a way to turn it off ingame so players who did want could have and people who didn't could turn it off.

Off topic but just as i'm writing this an advert for Dawn Guard came up on telly. Spooky.

Maybe they have other work to do and will wait to address your concerns when they have the time.

Well then, how about this:

The attacks do not start until you begin the Dawnguard questline. The attacks start off as very rare, but as you advance in the quest they get progressively more common until they climix at the penultimate Dawnguard quest. And after the final quest is completed, the attacks are switched off.

Well thats the ideal ideal solution. But Bethesda prefers less overt bandaids than that one, might as well be a glowing pink neon sign saying that their game design has erratic quality.

I like that one too. But other people like having the attacks all the time. So it would prevent them completing the questline if they wanted the attacks to continue.

I don't think so Uriel....more and more posts are popping up about this, here and on other forums. Some reviewers are starting to mention it too. Nice try at the psychology to convince ppl the opposite so hopefully they'll quit posting and go away.
Beth is taking it on the chin with this dlc, more reviews are poor allot of ps3 and PC ppl are upset, in large part because they don't even know when they'll get it, and of course this issue....

Actually another poll on this board showed the majority were not bothered.

I really like this add-on albeit for the glitches/bugs I keep on experiencing and the new vampire raid mechanic.

I understand that gamesas is trying to make the vampire threat seem more palpable by introducing these vampire and death hound raids and they do succeed.. however in not a good way at all.

So far I haven't had a problem with vampires killing any NPCs other than guards.. which I don't mind at all. However I cannot say the same when I encounter three to four death hounds attacking and slaying merchants and misc. quest-givers inside cities and towns. I find it baffling that death hounds are a larger threat to the life of NPCs than dragons and a civil war. For example, after playing vanilla Skyrim for six months (hundreds of hours) I've only ever received one letter of inheritance from a NPC. In the past three days after downloading Dawnguard I have already recieved thirteen. Bethesda really needs to change the rate at which these attacks occur and the ferocity at which they occur or else every city and town is going to be severely lacking in population. In my current game, Riften, Whiterun, Windhelm and Morthal are ghost towns.

All the outdoor merchants in Windhelm, Whiterun and Riften are now deceased. I cannot purchase horses from Markarth or Windhelm because the horse-sellers are dead. I cannot purchase Vigilance because the guy who sells him is dead. The aforementioned cities feel like ghost towns thus ruining my immersion. I loved what Bethesda did to Skyrim to make the cities feel more alive and vibrant than in any previous TES entry.. but with this new mechanic they have depopulated and made cities duller. These attacks have made the game broken to me.

If they could only patch the game to make these attacks less lethal, less frequent, didn't target merchants or only enable these massacres once the sun was blotted out I would probably like it.. but as it is now I hate it. I believe it is necessary for the player to feel the presence of a vampire threat and yadda-yadda but they need to tone it down. It seems to me now that vampires are more of a danger to the people of Skyrim than dragons, civil war, daedra and even bandit raids... which is a little overdoing it.

Please Bethesda.. fix this.. I have several friends who share the same sentiment. These vampire raids are becoming to much of a pain in the ass then a joy to be had. They are killing the experience with me. Please tone them down just a little, I don't want an empty world by the time the next DLC is released.

Hmm.. my experience is quite to the contrary. The emptying towns actualy increases my imersion. The vampires suddenly present a very real and tangable threat that must be destroyed! Giving me a quest and blah blah blah reasons is one thing. Seeing towns that my character has come to know and love wiped of life has giving my character an actual pressing need to put an end to this menace that has destroyed his wife and friends.
but i can see how it would get irritating for some. Much like the dragon attacks. I remember days when if i wasn't jumped by atleast three dragons, my dragonborn felt unapreciated. After the last patch the darn things are flying away from me.

And one of the original polls showed that a very large majority (90+ I believe) wanted this feature to be fixed in some way, compared to the around 30 that though it was fine the way it is.

The poll I saw had 100+ liked the feature.

Checked it again and its 93 liked it and 11 did not, maybe some of you should have voted.

Look at the results on this poll, then:

109 people wanted the feature to be fixed in some way, compared to the 24 who thought it was fine the way it is.

I have no problem with it being toned down. I just don't think its a huge game uninstalling or not buying issue.

i think its hilarious when dragons fly away from me, its like they are too scared and know that their doom is coming, anyway 'destroying' the vampire threat is impossible at this point in time because it seems like they have a bloody cloning factory....

I think that removing the attacks from cities and towns would be best. That way there is no risk of NPCs being annihilated, and the feature will still remain for those who wish to keep it in the game.

But some want the attacks to happen on cities/towns, and like the idea of possibily NPC's dying for good (after all they can die in dragon attacks). So the feature would not really "remain" for those who enjoyed the attacks on cities/towns if you removed the key feature of this event.

So you don't want any NPC's to be able to be killed by vamps? That's soft.

people have different connections to npc's in game, some people like me hate it when an npc dies (except nazeem) and there are people who dont care if the whole world becomes a lifeless wasteland. the npc's are about as strong as chickens and they never get replaced with another npc. what makes it worse is that the attacks happen in towns/cities you go near or enter. what makes it worse is that people travel to the city they prefer being the most, mine is whiterun and someone elses would be markarth. this increase the likelihood of our favourite npc's being slaughtered.

Well what is your suggestion then, may I ask? Because to be honest, I'm getting rather tired of this; It doesn't matter what we suggest, people like you who like the feature are just going to complain about it either way.

My biggest issue with it isn't the attacks as they now exist, it's that they automatically start whether you join dawnguard or not, and that they don't cease (or reduce in frequency) when you complete the mq. If I could keep them from starting by not joining dawnguard I'd be ok with that
