Nope. They dropped the more unnecessary skills like acrobatics, and gave us perk trees. As for spell making, I like to think that it died out with the Mage's guild.

i.love.your.avatar!!! and, on topic, i feel bethesda droped the ball with a lot of things, no more fun skills that could help define our charatcer (unnecessary my ass, i could hardly play without acrobatics since that is the main part of my builds, persk do not make up for it) or fun mechanics (like spell making, which had no reason, lore or game-play wise, to be taken out) but the world is nice

Why is acrobatics unnecessary? I for one liked playing a character who could perform crazy jumps. It offered a unique character build. Now all we have is warrior/thief/mage or some combination of the three. Also, why would spell making die out with the Mage's guild? Surely someone at the College of WInterhold is making their own spells.

Interesting. I never looked at it that way before, but that's a pretty valid explanation. The Mage's guild all but fell to ruin - few Nords would practice magic and fewer still would be proficient enough in it to make their own spells.

the illusion master is making an illusion spell that replicates our lost invisibility but he cant get it right, apparently, too bad we cant help him and restore what was lost

True, Nords don't care for magic (for the most part) and this wouldn't care for making their own spells. In oblivion, spell making was completely restricted to members of the Arcane University, which no longer exists. Also the Thalmor's sack of the imperial city could have destroyed much of the university.

I don't think so, they still made a great game despite the interesting design choices.

@solitudian I disliked how you had to level acrobatics in Obilvion by jumping repeatedly like a [censored]. I wish they would of just kept it n SKyrim as a enchantment or perk

They didn't drop the ball. But that doesn't mean improvement isn't needed - questlines need to be deeper, attributes back, perks learned dynamically as opposed to abstract 'perk points', certain skills back (unarmed particularly gripes), etc.

Yes, i believe they did drop the ball with skyrim. From many features being dropped, to the writing going to [censored]. They'll make sure you get more kill-cams and fire/ice arrows in upcoming patches tho!!!

the limitation to university members making spells was a game-play mechanic, not a lore representation, and, like i said, there is someone at the college of winterhold attempting to remake a spell from oblivion (he makes it clear he failed by asking if it works the first time he talks to you, this would be a much mroe interesting way to impleament spell making than the "pay an alter" mechanic oblivion had)

edit: and at least 1 of the students at thg college is making his own spells

Spell making was replaced with very customizable magic effects and better scripts than ever before. It's a good thing

Spell making can't of died out because that J'zargo was creating that spell for you to try out.

Well how about making Nords the only playable race then, since you are supposedly confined to Nord sensibilities when it comes to magic. But, then again... you mention the Thalmor... did the Thalmor destroy their own spellmaking abilities and confine themselves to Nord views of magic as well?

The lack of Spellmaking and he loss of spells is completely without basis in lore and it is silly to suggest otherwise.

The magic system svcks... missing many spells, destruction is useless to the point of frustration and spellmaking could of hid many of the flaws.

To answer the OP: I would say that Bethesda somewhat dropped the ball with Skyrim.

Up until this game, I've always played ES games on PC, but I've hardly ever used mods. In fact, I still play Morrowind in its vanilla state, and I enjoy it (and to a lesser extent, Oblivion) more as a vanilla game than Skyrim. I'm about to get Skyrim for PC though, and I feel that it has the potential to be the best ES game yet with mods. As a console player though, it was kinda dissapointing.

They didn't just "drop the ball" they turned around, told the other team to run to their side of the field and threw it back for them to score.

That's a matter of opinion. I think that Bethesda did in a very big way, but I respect the opinions of those who think they raised the bar. There are plenty of arguments for both sides. It's an unsolvable question.

Yes and No, they dropped the ball with the RPG aspects, The writing and a lack of other features (Spell Creation) but they more then made up for it with the incredible world that you can explore, Improved Gameplay, and the more balanced Enemy Scaling system. The Scaling to me is probably the most improved thing from Oblivion, for example today I explored a Cave northwest of Solitude at Level 11 and I encountered 2 Frost Trolls, those are Level 22 enemies. If this was Oblivion, those creatures would've been (Player Level +3) and not a challenge at all.

I think they created Skyrim....not a remake of the other TES games that have already been made.

And that's a good thing.

None of the Elder Scrolls games are a remake of previous games.
