Don't defend Bethesda

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 1:48 am

My script was for school work but was used for comparison that programming isnt easy nor can it always be bug free. People need to remember the hardest bugs to get rid of is one that isnt consistent. Like take 'A Stone Unturned' as an example. In my game my quest is working fine, my objective to be a full member of the thieves guild is ticked and shows I talked to the person needed. My wife on the other hand has completed the thieve guild questline, has all the associated achieves, is guild master but that objective wont complete for her. We didnt do anything different from each other but it just wont complete for her. Stuff like that is harder to pinpoint what causes that issue because its not easily replicated to help solve faster.

Most people here complaining seem to think a fix is 'as easy as it is to flip a switch'. Ive seen that thinking in a lot of places (used to be a support agent for DSL, FioS and Satellite TV). Bethesda is usually very good on fixing issues as quickly as possible so just give them the ability to. The game isnt totally unplayable. Just certain things you do can snag you.

Most people complaining (in my limited time on this forum) aren't complaining about the little things. Certainly in my case I saw plenty of bugs in 80 odd hours or so I've played. No. What most people here are complaining about is how a game which had some fairly innocuous and forgiveable little gripes, has, since the patch, become UNPLAYABLE for some.

I understand we all have different levels of tolerance to these things, some people are prepared to forgive all and everything that is made by their favourite companies. I, on the other hand (and many others, it seems) are not so prepared to just accept it. I show no allegiance to Bethesda, even though they have quite probably made some of my favourite games ever. They shouldn't just be allowed to drop the ball like this, though, and those who let them make the ironing out process even more difficult.

Bethesda is still good in my book, anyone that expects a game not to have bugs is delusional, at least Bethesda is doing the right thing and getting updates out as it can to fix issues. Thats more than I can say from some other game companies

I agree that you can't expect a game this size to be bug free. I absolutely understand that certain bug arise, BUT when a game is borderline unplayable (that is the case with the PS3 version) and graphical promises aren't met WITHOUT letting consumers know about this...then you are in effect betraying the consumers who have made you the company you are today.
It's a big no-no, no matter what reputation you have build over the years.

It's unplayable to a select few who feel that it's unplayable. For millions others it's just fine. If Bethesda is "growing to be the laughing stock" then it's only with the snotty hardcoe gamers. Mainly because to the normal folk, it's a game that brings them entertainment regardless of a few issues.

Well, thats a ridiculously sweeping statement.

I'm glad you're satisfied with your game, I was too up until 1.2 but I'm not anymore, hence the reason I'm even on this forum. What's your reason for being here?

And its only for some, thats what makes it hard to anticipate an issue like this will pop up, I would concede the argument if it was happening to everyone but its not. My dragons still fly around like normal and will attack like normal. Only thing Ive run into was quest snags that have yet to get addressed in any patch (well I havent my wife has)

Unplayable for Ps3 users (the majority, not minority) is enough said. This product was not ready to be released. Why was it released then?
To meet their ''cool'' and easy to remember release date and cash in on the christmas madness. They knew this stuff was going to happen, they tested it didn't they?
I'll bet they will try to fix all the major issues, but the fact that these major issues are even a subject to debate about shows that we got the freakin' shaft.
It's about money man, not about your warm and fuzzy feelings, that much has been proven already.

Just as sweeping as most of the claims on this forum.

I'm sorry - I missed how it was determined the majority of people have found it unplayable? Maybe you can show me the data to back up that statement?

How can we even keep track of that data? I can't and maybe that was indeed a bold statement but still, it doesn't matter since it's happening to a LOT of people and shouldn't happen at all. It isn't an isolated problem and therefor we can safely assume Bethesda knew about this before releasing the game.

and to the guy that started this post i don't like when all these people defend it neither. I say if you spend your hard earned money on a game, you have the right to complain and state your opinion until you're blue in the face. tbh i think they all are kissing bethesda's ass on this site and hoping and praying they get noticed. & they will not

Some? Well lets take the resistance bug. Lets just say it is some. (I think its MOST if the truth be told, or if people actually checked) Pre patch it was NONE of us having this problem. It was introduced. As was (in MY case) a texture issue I never had and also frequent crashes.

Personal experience I know, but, at the end of the day, I didn't pay £40 to be a beta tester for Bethesda. You are sure it works for all, or it doesn't get released. Simple.

You know you have a failed product (for now at least) when you spend more time discussing the problems than actually enjoying the game.

My wife can still tank a frost dragon pre and post patch so the bug isnt happening to everyone. You arent a beta tester for Bethesda and this was just something unintended when making another fix to the game. That happens when you patch. Unless this is your first game with being patched, you should know by now that patch fixes usually come with new issues (and it doesnt matter how 'good' or 'bad' the code was)

The gist of what the OP is saying is actually right (although his way of expressing it could use some work). People who defend what Bethesda have done here are essentially contributing to the possibility that they will do it again with their next game.

The notion that this amount of bugs couldn't be avoided is absurd. There are numerous game-breaking bugs that made it into the retail copy. Some people in this forum don't seem to have much of a grasp of economics. It's quite obvious that the game should have spent far more time between code freeze and code release. They didn't even come close to getting the bugs out of it.

To me, it's clear that they prioritized making their release window over eliminating the issues that the game had. Certain issues were so obvious that there's no way that they could have made it through scrutinization. Things like the texture scaling problems on the 360 or the crippling lag on the PS3 couldn't possibly have gone undiscovered. You'd have to believe them to be totally incompetent if you think they missed those. The fact is that they chose to release the game anyway and they did so because they believed that it would be the most profitable course of action. I'm sure they realized that there would be backlash and I'm sure that the current all hands on deck cram-fest where they do everything they can to put out fires was something they knew would be necessary.

Unfortunately; we the consumers are the ones who lose out in this whole thing. We have been mistreated here. Not because of the quality of the game. When the game is actually working, it is a marvel to behold and my respect for them as creative people has gone through the roof. It's my respect for them as business people that has erroded dramatically.

The problem is that the game wasn't ready for release and as such it shouldn't have been in stores on the 11th. Some people have made the argument that, even if your game can no longer be played, you have already gotten more enjoyment out of it than you would get with most games. That might be true but we have also gotten far more frustration out of it than pretty much any game. If you buy a ticket to see a movie and you are really enjoying every minute of it but half way through, the movie just stops; how would you feel? Would you say, "hey, I got more enjoyment out of this movie than most," or would you want your money back? The bottom line is that it doesn't matter how good a product is if it doesn't actually work.

I, for one, would rather take the stance of separating the quality of the content in the game from the reliability of the software. I would rather take a stance where I make it clear to them that I don't feel that selling a product in that state is acceptable. It is, quite simply, a malfunctioning product. It doesn't work and we shouldn't act like that's ok.

I love TES franchise but its hard to defend any developer who releases a game this full of bugs. They must have known what they were releasing also as 1 single days worth of QA would have shown them a decent amount of bugs to realise people are not going to be happy.

If they didn't want this amount of negativity, they shouldn't have been so lapse with QA before the game was released.

Also, has anyone noticed an increase of pop-in?!
It's definetly there, no question about it. So on top of bland textures we get more pop-in.
Hooray, more layers on the sh1tcake!

Must not play any MMOs, or played FO3 after the Broken Steel patch or any other game that has had issues after a patch. In MMOs its common for a patch to start borking things.

No. No I don't play MMO's.

But I played Fallout 3 with all the DLC and never game across anything remotely as bad.

Judging from your posts, it seems you want to lower the bar. You want us to think of this as being acceptable. I just can't disagree more. I think it's normal for games to have a bug or two upon release that gets patched up within a week or two. It's not normal for a game to be crawling with bugs (including terminal issues) to the point where a substantial proportion of buyers cannot even play the game anymore. Stop telling them that this is ok.

Did you play FO3 just after Broken Steel came out? playing it months afterwards doesnt count as the issue was fixed then, from what I hear Broken steel had issues when it was first patched/came out

Never said bar should be lowered but most likely people have expectations way to high.

This is really irrelevant. I played the game on release, then afterward, got the special edition with all the DLC. Whats your point here? That another Bethesda game became unplayable?

So, it is beyond expectation to be able to play the game at all now?
