Dont play Dead is Dead

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 10:59 am

earlier this week i posted a thread about how great the DiD playstyle is and how it is the only way to play. at that point i was thirty+ hours in with a level 16 breton who had never tasted death..that was until i went poking around in a dwemer ruin and got 1 shotted by a spinning blade trap. what a lame way to go, it was the definition of anticlimactic and the deep immersion i had built up was chopped to pieces by some ridiculous trap. It was literally unavoidable i opened a door and it was right there-instantly killed without the slightest chance of surviving. I even had a decorted house in riften and had recently became a nightingale.all the steam was let out of the game when i opened that fateful door and i fear ill never get the same feeling from skyrim that i had predeath. I mean i dont want to start another DiD i put so much work into my last one and now the game feels a little boring. I think Dead is Dead ruined skyrim for me

You'd be surprised how many peolpe expire in the world anticlimatically. I'd think in your situation thats just fitting. your death wasn't glorious, or life changing. nah you just got offed for being Careless :)

So because you dislike a playstyle, you think nobody else should do it? Yes, it's a shame that a character you put so much effort into died, but nobody is forcing you to delete it if you're that damn attached.

Well, there MUST be more to it than that. If there is a door that kills you 100% as soon as you enter it, no possibility of surviving, then that's an impossible door. You must have walked forward without checking, or something.

DiD is a play style that is not forgiving. I don't play this way myself. I understand those that do play this way.

Every time I pass that spot in the ruins I will pay my respects to your character. I don't pay DID and prob never will.

Should have been looking for those traps, you know. You were in a Dwemer ruin after all, right? My first char, first ruin, with Lydia in tow, I got ganked again and again for being careless. Once I STOPPED, and proceeded more carefully, looking, etc., I was fine. Lydia, of course, did a lot of crawling and limping.

Try "Hero's Nightmare" instead of DID.

Only save right after sleeping... that way if you do die you can play it off as a bad dream. Trust me, you'll still hate dying after a 4 hour grind.

I thought this sort of thing was kind of the point of the playstyle.

I think I know the door you're talking about, and I died in the same spot (though I have no interest in playing DID). There is actually a slot in the floor where the blades come out. If you look, you'll see that every trap has some visual clue. You can get past that one with a become ethereal shout - or probably even direct your companion to open the door if you're feeling like a &#$%.

Wait - was it a door into a new gamecell, or just an opening door within the same gamecell? Was the blade this side of the door, or the other? I always open doors with me as much to the side as possible, just for this reason. I also open chests from the side if possible also, a few times that's saved me from being darted

In future playthroughs, you'll look at doors more carefully I bet. I haven't come across any trapped doors that lacked any kind of "tell", and there's always time enough to step away from the door before the trap activates. If all else fails you can order a hireling to open the door.

He's just giving a viewpoint. He wasn't arrogant about it. He was giving his recommendation based on his "harrowing" experience. Remember he said he was recommending DID earlier and now regrets telling people to play that style.

Let's be honest, we've ALL probably at one time or another said to a friend "whatever you do, don't go see that movie, I hated it". Even though it's simply our personal experience and might not mirror how our friend would see it at all.

Considering how easy it is to get ROFLstomped in this game... I fail to see the fun in DiD playstyle either.

I like this idea. It kinda ties in to my 'Scrubs' idea for Skyrim roleplaying, but is more punishing. The downside is the clairvoyance of the nightmare scenario.

There are a few nasty traps in this game so some foreknowledge would help if you want to play DiD.

That particular door there are two slots in the floor which both sprout those evil spinning blades when you try to open it.

Spoiler
However if you know they are there you can spring the trap by firing a spell/arrow at the door, once sprung it will not reset and you can safely pass

one of my Dead is (almost) Dead characters died by the blades of that double trap yesterday, if you dont wish it to count dont. my character has nightmares that previde insite into his life, so when i get chopped in a non satisfactory way i just load in back up at home. i always save and turn off at home after sleeping. so i reset my days play as punishment for dieing.

ive had a few other did' characters that ive just let perish how ever perthetic. so personaly its up to the player how u play your game. my did wood elf lasted 50 hours so has become a permient character. (my personal thresh hold for did' characters is 50 hours and that point they either become perminent or i send them on a oneway trip lol.

wow ninja'd by nerd joe: freaky lol.

From a fellow DiD I can commiserate. I've had some recent deaths that have shook me a bit. Your first heavy loss is the worst FYI. Get back up on the horse. Try a completely different build. Give yourself some wacky requirement. Have a crazy character.

I challenge you. Make a dual wield pickaxe resto light armor sneak. Bows for dragons only. Orc. Illusion and enchanting only. No smithing. Use alchemy for poisons. Enchant the pickaxes. Balls to the wall character. He must be ever moving toward combat. Think of it as warriors ADD.

Annnnnnnddddddd GO!!!

DID isn't for everybody, but that is as worthy of a death to claim your character as any. DID playthroughs don't start reaching their potential until after a few painful deaths and you become very wary of your surroundings and opponents.

I'm on my 4th DID playthrough right now where I feel all but invincible and it's much more satisfactory and enjoyable playing him that it was with my first character.

It was avoidable, you were just careless and did not see the door was trap. All traps are avoidable, in fact lockpicking is more usefull to disarm deadly door trap than opening chest. But to disarm you have to see it of course.

Being careless and playing DiD is not a good match at all. Next time you will be more vigilant and look carefully at every door, especially in Dwemer ruin.
