IGN Top 100 RPG's of all time.

Post » Fri Sep 21, 2012 9:06 pm

Guess you have a point. Still, it was fun to see all the butthurt over IGN saying Dark Souls will eat Skyrim's face.

They just showed the top 10

Fallout 3 got 10
WOW got 8
Skyrim got 7
FF7 was 11 I think?
Baldur's Gate took 3rd
FF6 got 1st

"Set in a post-apocalyptic American wasteland rife with memorable characters, Fallout 3 is the epitome of the deep, modern RPG and the archetype that many developers will mimic moving forward."

I also like:

"While Fallout: New Vegas is admittedly less polished than Fallout 3, its factions set a shining example for how multifaceted karma systems can work in games. Every action you take affects your standing with multiple groups, and it's impossible to keep everyone happy, making for a far more nuanced experience than the typical black-and-white karma divide of similar games. The decisions you make not only impact your experience throughout New Vegas, but lead you to one of several vastly different final confrontations that wholly transform the game's ending. New Vegas also manages to feel like its own game, despite using the same engine as Fallout 3. The Vegas strip and the rest of Nevada feel nothing like Fallout 3's Wasteland and instead have their own personality entirely. Many side missions are so fully fleshed out that they're indistinguishable from main quests, and finishing all of them takes well over 100 hours. Add that to dangerous new enemies, great new characters and the return of Fallout 3's fantastic S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats and leveling system and you get a truly special experience that few other games come close to."

BS, Wasteland 2 will probably be a better game and RPG.

Nice crystal ball you have there. All I had to do was glance at the boring deserts of Fallout: NV to start up Fallout 3 again. Fallout 3 was a revelation in the industry. And no, I refuse to play Fallout 1 or 2 because turn-based combat is about as exciting as watching moss grow on a stump.

Too bad they never actually explained their ranking criteria. Placing the names of all 100 games into a hat and drawing seems to be the most reasonable explanation, though I imagine they just wanted to get folks arguing about it.

Given their obvious preference for JRPGs and Action RPGs, I'm a bit surprised to see BGII in the number 3 spot.

I get the feeling they put Fallout 1 & 2 on the list because they felt like they had to.

I also love how the Capital Wasteland has a lot of buildings still left standing. Then again, the nukes did have "Made in China" stamped on them so it works out fine.

Fallout 3 deserved its place on that list, I think New Vegas should have been higher, it being atleast on the twenties,

WTH Bigbossbalrog, you're supposed to say New Vegas should've been lower! You must be an impostor.

Oh, dear lord why did I even... I'm outta here.

NO GAME ever did it before! FO3's SPECIAL was revolutionary! It's good New Vegas copied FO3's Special, and even though Agility and Charisma were borderline worthless in FO3 and New Vegas gave them purpose, FO3 is more polished!

This is exactly why IGN isn't taken seriously. Half of their statements seem so obviously misinformed that you get the sense they didn't actually play the games. I can't tell you how many times I've watched one of their game reviews or trailers and caught some criticism they've made of a game that was actually undeserved because there was a fix, work-around or solution to IGN's problem that they were completely oblivious to. For example Old World Blues was labelled with "having no healing items, so you'll have a really hard time healing yourself and you'll have to rely on Sunset Sasparilla," except you can bring as many stims with you as you like, and every chemistry set in OWB can be interacted with to create Stimpacks. You'd think professional game reviewers would catch these things....

Is it just me or does anyone else have a problem with Pokemon being an RPG. I guess it could qualify as one but I never really thought of the seires as being RPG.

Ignoring the "hur hur, lookit the idiots who think Skyrim's an RPG" mutual-backpatting society......

10-19 played 5 or 6
(Diablo, Secret of Mana, KotoR, FF7, FO3, and a bit of FF Tactics)

1-9 played 7
(Mass Effect, WoW, Skyrim, Diablo 2, Chrono Cross, FF6, Pokemon)

So, close to 50 of 'em. Didn't finish them all, though. Ah, well.

Pretty silly list overall. But most "top 100" lists are junk. How do you really rank that many different things?

What the hell does that matter? Visually, the game is leagues ahead of New Vegas. The atmosphere and graphics were top notch for the time.

Exactly, how do you think New Vegas managed to be amazing in a one year of development? It re-used tons of assets from F3.
You cannot deny without fallout 3, New vegas would have taken a hell longer to make.

No they don't. Fallout 3's art design is far superior.
