IGN Top 100 RPG's of all time.

Post » Fri Sep 21, 2012 10:13 pm

Morrowind is at 32 and oblivion at 22... [censored] IGN. Whoever said you cant spell ignorance without IGN hit the nail right on the head on that one... Now to see what number 1 is. My predictions of Final Fantasy 7 or Ocarina of Time still stand. (and i still think thats ridiculous)

And super mario RPG is above oblivion and morrowind?! are you serious? I loved super mario RPG but it was definitely not a better game then morrowind, or even oblivion for that matter.

Exactly. You can literally lose yourself in an Elder Scrolls game...

I'm guessing WoW and FFVII are making it into the top 10. I think WoW just might take the number one spot...

I'm a huge FF fan, and I loved FFVII, but even I don't think it deserves the number 1 spot. In fact, I liked Kingdom Hearts more. :ermm:

What made me like VII more was Advent Children and Crisis Core, actually. I don't know how on Earth it achieved it's cult following. It's story is nice, but there are better stories out there. And Cloud isn't likable in the least. Sephiroth looks cool, and acts badass and all, but arguable Kefka was a much better villain. Sephiroth's reasoning for turning evil and trying to destroy everything was pretty dubious.

I also enjoy Kingdom hearts better. I haven't played it in a long time though. Not even the more recent one. What Dream Drop Distance?

It's for the 3DS. Takes place after II. Specifically after Kingdom Hearts Coded for the DS.

Final Fantasy VII was in the right place at the right time with a massive marketing campaign. It helps that it was a great game, but its success is as much a result of circumstance as it was the game's quality. Of course, nostalgia has allowed it to remain so popular.

Not that it doesn't deserve some of its popularity, but it's a shame that the series' past and future has to remain in its shadow.

The thing that kinda annoys me about its popularity is how people hype up the Aeris thing like it hasn't been done before. Phantasy Star II (and IV) did the same thing years before, as pointed out by the description on that IGN page.

I was too young to care about Aeris. :P

But I can imagine if someone more mature played it, they'd be more attached.

That's what happens when the industry's top DAWGZ in the RPG business enter the same bar.

Aerith's scene always struck me as something that people reacted to because it was almost expected of them. It was sad and I don't doubt that someone, somewhere, got a little misty-eyed, but to move millions of gamers the way some folks claim? I don't even remember it being that big of a thing until all of those kids grew up and started talking about how heartwrenching it was in retrospect.

Again, neato scene/plot point, but the game did plenty of others things that I liked much more.

Not a terrible list. Sure I can't say I agree with all the choices but in the end the list is just an opinion.

FF7 was a pretty good game, but I've never really understood the "ZOMG!" that some people throw around about it.

Hmm, of the 21-29 set, played about 5 of them (Ultima 4, Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate, DQ8, Oblivion, and a minimal amount of Fallout 2)

I'm guessing they made this list just by putting every RPG they could think of on the list in no particular order other than by what game's they thought of first. God, why not make the list smaller so it doesn't look so poorly put together?

Teehee, I can just picture it now. This thread would become an absolute riot to read if such a thing became true! Although I'll stand by my opinion that whatever rank Skyrim gets, Dark Souls has to at least be one above it since IGN was trashing Skyrim in Dark Soul's favor unless they already listed DS.

I have a bucket of popcorn, my condescending attitude and several hilarious youtube clips that demonstrate Skyrim's horrible NPC interactivity and immersion-breaking scenarios all ready and waiting for the big unveiling of Skyrim as the greatest RPG of all time.

Skyrim is still an RPG, just a really, really, really, really, really, really, really bad one. And that's being polite.

Get real, we can all see where this is going.

At this point I think the only two contenders for 1st are Skyrim and FFVII. They've already listed off most of the RPGs people would probably consider 1st place contenders, from what I saw.
Plus going by the general trend of the list, we have Oblivion beating Morrowind and supposedly Fallout 3 is about to be crowned the greatest Fallout title ever. I somehow doubt we're gonna see something like Baldur's Gate 2 or anything older than 10 years (save FFVII cause back then everyone obsessed over it or Ocarina of Time) take 1st.

Guess you have a point. Still, it was fun to see all the butthurt over IGN saying Dark Souls will eat Skyrim's face.
