Impossible to play a pure Necromancer

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:31 pm

Judging by the massive trolling, nobody has even played past TES games. I remember conjuring up skellys and zombies to do my dirty work. Fun times. Now we have....atronachs? Meh, I'll stick to my undead >:)

Most characters can live off of One Handed or Sneak. Try again.

With no armor skills? Nothing else but one-handed or sneak? I call BS. If you didn't put your perks into but one skill you'd end up getting level perks faster than you could spend them.

WHY CAN"T I BE A PURE SPEECH THIEF AND TALK EVERYTHING TO DEATH!!!!???!!!!

*ok some more talking options and speech quest completing options would have been nice

Why can't you be a negotiator in the game?

Worked somewhat in Fallout New Vegas.

Talk people into not wanting to fight you or get them on your side.

Speech is a powerful thing. If you know how to influence someone, you can make them do crazy things.

Money is easy to come across in Skyrim. Invest in some potions and you are good. One Handed is a bit trickier, but it's very easy to live off of sneak itself. Dark brotherhood gloves and the backstab bonus works out very well. Plus you can just avoid fights alltogether.

Archery has to do with using...hmm let me guess bows?

Light armor has to do with what the character wears, it does not define weither he is still an archer or not.

The difference is...

If you called yourself a thunder mage and used fire, ice, and illusion spells, then you are not a thunder mage.

Ok, then.

Let's say you were a restoration-mainly mage. If you used ice magic to kill enemies would you not be a restoration mage anymore?

Or an illusion mage. Yeah, try clearing dungeons and killing ppl with illusion only... see how you do that...

Necromancy is a support abilitu. Pure support builds are, by definition, only feasible when there is someone else to support... Duh...

Well, ofc you can't summon skeletons and zombies out of nowhere... what did you expect?

Still, a pure necromancer can summon demons, no? Well, you do have your flame atronarchs. Also, in my book, a pure necromancer can hack opponents with their scythe on top of summoning stuff. Well, you have no scyth, but a 2-handed sword enchanted with absorb soul should do...
And sounds pretty powerfull as well...

And, in keeping with using only Conjuration, you can always conjure up a Bound Sword. It has the added benefit of giving points in both Conjuration and One-Handed.

Perhaps interestingly the OP's point is actually pointed out in the Official Strategy guide.

Page 26: "Necromancy has one major drawback: you need fresh corpses to resurrect"

In game necromancers do not entirely rely on corpses either. In fact I don't think any character can just rely on one skill, or subset of a skill (like necromancy)

I felt like I couldn't live without Speech in New Vegas because it was such a powerful tool. You can make enemies allies, friends into foes and engage in some deep dialogue. In Oblivion, I had an outgoing character who did the quest Whodunit? and got on everyone's good side. At the end, only Primo Antonius and Nels the Naughty were left. Primo thought we were finally free, and so he decided to avenge everyone and hacked Nels to death, and then went to look for the key! I rofled so hard, but felt kind of bad slashing him in the back.

No, I'm not entirely sure I do know exactly what you mean. If by "pure Necromancer" you simply mean being focused on necromancy, then others have said that this is quite feasible. If by "pure Necromancer" you mean that the only skill you use is Conjuration, and only certain Conjuration spells at that, then no, that's completely absurd. No warrior only levels his weapon skill, no thief only levels sneak, and no mage is only going to level one magic skill.

oh, hey look some wolves

"hey guys, hows the weather? kinda hot huh? well, I know you guys are busy doing your thing, just wonderin' if you wanna fight each other to the death for me, please?"
*gets face chewed off*

I loved new vegas (maybe even more than skyrim) and I wish they had more speech checks and ways to solve quests and unicorns, but you can't talk your way out of every situation, necromancers need dead(uninhabited) bodies (hence the term necro)

You said mainly, so you are not saying only. That would just make him a mage that heals and uses ice. Not a pure healer.

Or an illusion mage. Yeah, try clearing dungeons and killing ppl with illusion only... see how you do that...

I've played pure illusion mage, it is viable. Very fun playthrough and by far the easiest. Only problem is fighting things like dragons that for what ever stupid reason are not able to be influenced by illusion spells I think?

Necromancy is a support abilitu. Pure support builds are, by definition, only feasible when there is someone else to support... Duh...

Where is necromancy labeled as a support ability?

How does one get the backstab bonus if one doesn't use any weapons?

Pure Sneak means sneak only!!!!!1111111

So by your logic, if you are a pure warrior who uses only one handed, block, heavy armor and smithing, then if you sell your dungeon loot or buy a potion, you are no longer a warrior now because you did soemthing that involved speech OMG!!! Btw, doing the occasional backstab doesn't go against being a pure sneaker, since I'm not investing any perks in One Handed. Since one handed is never invested in, it's not really a major skill to the character.

Sometimes, as a Necromancer, you need to take matters into your own hands. Don't have a corpse to work with? CREATE ONE.

where is restoration labeled support, where is anything labeled support? why is it hard to understand a necromancer needs an uninhabited corpse to necromance?

WHY CANT I BE A PURE RESTORATION MAGE AND HEAL EVERYTHING TO DEATH!!!!!????!!!!!!

Gave me an idea...

If you are able to give life, why aren't you able to take it away.

If someone has a wound why aren't you able to speed up the bleeding?

Why just restoration?

What would be the opposite of restoration?

@ fatalfenrir

Ok, if I say restoration-only, what do you say?

Sure pure illusion is viable... until you need to kill something 1v1, that is... then what? Spam fear and hope it falls off a cliff? If it's a dragon?

Where exactly does it say that necromancy is not a support skill? Or where does it say that archery is an offensive skill for that matter?

What would be the opposite of restoration?

Drain health, obviously... So, either vampiric magic or enchanted weapons/staves...

Which reminds me: get a drain health staff, ideally the staff of magnus, and you can be a pure necromancer then. After all, if you can give life to the dead, how is it possible to not be able to drain life from the living?

Restoration in lore has been mentioned to be able to effectively open wounds as much as closing them.

But it got dumbed down.

If you can conjure a Dremora from Oblivion, why can't you conjure a zombie from a graveyard all the way in Falkreath or something? If there were tomes that had raise zombie or skelly I think they necromancers could be completely self sufficient with conjuration alone. People underestimate Conjuration but it's a really good tree. You have your own cache of weapons, can cast thralls and use the dead to your advantage in battle. It was the same way with Destruction in Oblivion, you could totally use Destruction alone and get by just fine. Actually, my first mage in Oblivion was destruction only and did just fine.

There is no single skill that can be used without any other skills at all. This is simply a ridiculous argument. Nobody can play a destruction mage with no armor, no healing, no alteration or restoration spells to protect himself, and so forth. Ditto for the illusionist. Yes, you can use followers to tank for you, but without any protection or healing at all, you're simply going to have to never get hit even once, which is flatly impossible.

Similarly, there are no warriors that only use one skill. There are no thieves that only use one skill. What kind of thief sneaks around but never uses lockpicking or pickpocketing skills?

Drain Health, which was taken out because it was too straight forward I guess, it kinda conflicts with fire because fire has the DOT effect for its "side benefit" making straight forward damage redundant

or the other opposite of restoration would be necromancy

Two things :

1)Unfortunetely,technically,necromancy is not a skill. The skill is conjuration.Yes that is how dumbed down necromancy is,you get half a tree and are supposed to be happy. So technically necromancy is not a skill,it's part of one.

HOWEVER

2)I agree with the OP that necromancy should be more viable and easy to use.In past games you could summon skeletons like that,or zombies, now you have to TARGET a dead body(aim *cough*) to summon a moronic force of undeath, that is going the other way of the dungeon.

Also,i remind you AGAIN in past games you could summon skeletons and zombies.Now...?

And to those of you that say "you can't reanimate if there is no body to reanimate" OH REALLY?I can't go to a graveyard and grab a full skeleton of bones and then reanimate it mid battle?Or maybe you want to explain to me why i can't reanimate skeletons in general?

Let's not kid ourselves, necromancy is a joke in this game, but it still is not a tree.It SHOULD be a full tree, not what they did.Tedious,idiotic,unsatysfying.I want my create greater skeleton version NAO.

Armor has nothing to do with wether you are a mage or not.

Why do people keep using this?
