Keybinding Issues #2 (Hotkeys, Favorites, NumPad, Drop Item,

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 2:05 am

I was able to use the Favorite('F') once, but not anymore. And I cannot drop anything. It says 'R' is to drop, but it does nothing.

Also menu system is not so friendly if you use a mouse button to strafe right. As it uses your -forward-backward-strafe left- and -strafe right- keys for menu navigation. However if you use a mouse button like me(which you probably don't) it isn't recognized.

Overall pretty cool though. As my computer was below recommendation and above minimum it's running ok. No high settings for me though. I think it may even run better than oblivion did(however that was mod'd up).

Anyone run into the keyboard issues? I've become over encumbered and now I can't drop anything... I'll go fiddle around and see if I can rectify.

So far I've tried:
1- Restarting the game = Nope
2- Change keyboard layout = Nope
3- Cussing = Nope
4-Weeping = Nope

Update:

Restoring controls to defaults makes the keys work the way they should... too bad I hate the default layout....

I've even tried other keys to see if the shortcut key just got moved while change controls. But that doesn't seem to be so.

I know I'm not likely to get a response about this so early....

"Drop" should be mapped to whatever "Ready Weapon" is mapped to. If you've remapped things, try that key.

I've tried every key on my keyboard :)

I figured it would change, but no luck.

I can get the 'add/remove favorite' shortcut to work but only when looking at a container. If I just go in inventory, it doesn't work.

Also I use a keyboard key for my left hand attack... I'm unable to change the weapon in my left hand as that key doesn't work. It displays MB1/MB2 to equip weapon (even though MB2 is not an attack key for me), and even so doesn't work anyways.

It seems if you bind something else to the keys mentioned as being shortcuts, they get overwritten, but it doesn't change to where you remapped it.

And the fact that the 'F' for favorite/unfavorite works in containers BUT not in inventory seems to indicate that something is broken...

Interesting. Would you mind posting your current remappings? I'll try it out here and see if the bug repros. If so, we should be able to roll out a fix for this next patch.

They are very active here in the forum. =)

If the threads about bugs begin to emerge more and more, it would be interesting to create a main bugs topic, or even a new forum just for support, or no?

I just want to say that I've met the same problem. The menus are static, therefore it will always say "R" to drop for example, but if you remapped your controls say, to "F" for combat stance, then drop becomes F, but the menu does not update...this could get very confusing when many buttons are remapped. The two I have remapped are R and F swapped as I'm used to this from Oblivion, and instantly noticed the problem with not being able to drop items and favourites became another button.

I'm having a similar problem, while I'm able to drop things from my inventory with that key, I'm unable to store anything in containers. Similarly, with the default mappings there's no problems. EDIT: Also, for some reason despite being mapped as "V", favourites responds to "A" in the inventory, but to "V" out of it.

My mappings:
Spoiler

Forward: E
Back: D
Strafe Left: S
Strafe Right: F
Left Hand: M1
Right Hand: M2
Activate: R
Ready/Sheathe: G
Character Menu: M3
Toggle POV: A

Sprint: Shift
Shout/Power: W
Sneak: C
Run: Alt
Tggle Always Run: Caps
Auto-Move: Q
Favourites: V
Quick Save: F5
Quick Load: F9
Wait: T
Journal: J
System Tab: Esc
Quick Inventory: Tab
Quick Magic: P
Quick Stats: ?/
Quick Map: M

This is the way of it, I'm afraid. We weighed the clarity of swapping out the button help with whatever the user had mapped versus the enormous amount of video memory required to load up every possible piece of button art every time you entered the Inventory, and speed/memory won out.

Also, for some reason despite being mapped as "V", favourites responds to "A" in the inventory, but to "V" out of it.
That is as planned. Basically, the fall-back logic for the user remapping their keys around is to try to match the new anologue. In the menu, 'F' is Favorites, but in-game, it's Toggle POV. So, the menu uses the Toggle POV key to favorite/unfavorite. Ideally, you'd be able to remap menu keys separate from gameplay keys, but just one of those "I wish I had more time" things...

Anywho, thanks for the mapping info! I'll track this down today.

Solution: use text. :thumbsup: Many games just stick the key name inside square brackets, and we're perfectly fine with that.

Restoring controls to defaults makes the keys work the way they should... too bad I hate the default layout....
This is happening more and more these days for some reason, so I think a gaming keyboard or keypad is a good investment (like the Logitech G13, which I have). For every game I play I just stick the default key binds into the Logitech software, and then bind those commands to the keypad in whatever way I want. The game still gets the default keybinds, and I get my preferred layout. Easy! Also helps where devs don't let you rebind keys for some sadistic reason.

Sure thing, Thanks,

I've noticed when looking in a container, for the 'R' it says "Take All" and that one works, it also says "E" for "take" item, which does not work. And "F" will make favorite, but only when looking in container, and not when looking at inventory.

Also have issues equipping something into the Left Hand. Sometimes I can do it, other times I can't. Currently I can't, trying to recreate. As earlier I was able to equip items into Left Hand by using ALT, or ENTER (ALT is bound to active). But now when I try ALT it equips into RH...

Can't navigate "Right" in menus(skills, inventory, magic ect.) I'm guessing because I've bound my Strafe Right to a Mouse Button. No keys like the arrow keys, that work in inventory for up and down, but not left and right it seems allow me to navigate Right. I need to click with the mouse button( which works to go forward in inventory, but not backwards in spells)

Can't Favorite Spells at all so far.

I will also Try putting everything back to default(as that did seem to fix) and then change my keys one at a time and see which ones set it off.

Here is Layout, a little odd. From Counter Strike Days. Right hand does right stuff, left hand does left stuff, and have two fingers free on keyboard at all times even when moving in all directions(Forward Back, Strafe Left, Strafe Right).
Layout:
Spoiler

Forward = E
Backward = D
Strafe Left = W
Strafe Right = M2
Left Hand = A
Right Hand = M1
Activate = Alt
Ready/Sheath = T (Does not do favorite, or drop)
Character Menu = TAB
Toggle POV = M3
Jump = R
Sprint = M5
Shout = Shift
Sneak = M4
Run = Space
Toggle Run = Caps
Auto-Move = G
Favorites = Q (Does not do favorites in container or inventory, Does bring up favorites menu in game)
Q-Save = F5
Q-Load = F9
Wait = Y
Journal = Z
System Tab = ESC
Quick Inventory = X

hmm can't Edit my post.

----
Ok it does seem to be when changing those Binds.

Ready/Sheath = (Default R) If I change to "T" I can no longer drop item with either "R" or "T"
Toggle POV = (Default F) if changed to "Mouse3" Can no longer favorite an item or spell with "F" or new "Mouse 3"- CAN Favorite an item if I access it through a container using "F"
Left Hand = If I change from "Mouse2" to "A" I can no longer equip anything in my Left Hand. Occasionally the "Activate" key would equip in Left Hand, however right now that is Equiping into Right Hand.[EDIT] Ok I think i figured it out. Using Mouse1 will equip into Right Hand. Mouse2(which is my Strafe Right) does nothing. The "A" Key (which is my new remapped "Left Hand") does nothing(although "A" does work to equip to Left Hand in the Favorites Menu). If I try to equip a spell using the "Active" key, the first time it will select it for the Right Hand, but If I hit it again, it will Also equip it in the Left Hand, AND THEN using the "Activate" Key WILL equip Spells into the Left Hand. However only way to equip a weapon in Left Hand is to use the Favorites Menu. It's like a giant puzzle every time I go into my inventory :)
[/EDIT]

-I'm ok with the menus showing the wrong key, so long as the key I remapped it to does the trick.
-Being able to navigate to the right using my "Mouse2" bound to Strafe Right would also be nice.
-This time I HAVE been able to use arrow keys to navigate menus(Magic/inventory)

------ My Work Around so Far------
-I put Sheath back to "R" as I had it as jump, and "T" as Sheath, not a big deal to switch those.
-I put Favorites back to "F" as otherwise I can't favorite a spell, and can only favorite items via a container.
-I equip items in my left hand via the Favorites Menu(probably be doing that most the time anyway), And seem to be able to use "Activate"(ALT) to select spell to left hand in spells menu.

sjvan0 and Morilibus, your bugs have been reproed here and summarily fixed. Basic run-down: remapping Toggle POV, Ready Weapon, and a few other events to mouse buttons was throwing things off. Also, Container menu wasn't properly listening for remapped events.

The fix will be rolled into the next Steam update. Sorry again for not catching this before release. Our remapping testing only goes as far as our creativity during development, which always falls short of how many different ways people conceive of bending their fingers. =P

Just so I and other devs don't constantly have to pop in to say it, keep posting any problems you're having. Soon, if not already, there will be a (very full, I'm sure) Skyrim Bugs sub-forum. We'll be watching, we'll be fixing, always fixing... Enjoy Skyrim!

Awesome, some fixes! I have some suggestions for UI binds.

  • Let [Esc] exit containers and menus (only go to the normal Esc menu when not inside another menu).
  • Enable [A] for Take All, like in the Fallout games. Worked very well.
  • Remove the [E] bind from menus. We have mouse buttons; we don't need the option to confirm an inventory item with Use.
  • Instead, let us press Use to exit containers. You Use a container, see nothing you like, press Use again to close it. Much more intuitive than pressing Tab.
  • Pressing Take All in an empty container should close the container. Right now it just sits there.
  • Some prompts ask us to confirm with [Enter], like the Continue prompt at the main menu. Why not with the Use key?
  • I really dislike the [R] to drop/store bind. How about Ctrl-Click?
  • It seems that sometimes I need to double-click on conversation topics to select them (like once to select and once to confirm).
  • Please number conversation topics to I can press a number to select them directly.
  • Expanding the conversation topic box to display more topics at once would be nice.
  • The UI font could stand to be smaller to display more items.

Oh, and how do I hotkey a weapon to the number keys like in Oblivion and Fallout?

I just wanted to add that I definitely had the same issues regarding the dropping of items as Morilibus. In my case, I had Ready/Sheathe on my middle-mouse button or [M3]. Just tried using it and it did not function for dropping items from the inventory. But great news that this is getting fixed!

However, I have two other peculiar bugs to add that I think are related to custom keybindings:

- Lockpicking
I mapped Strafe Left and Strafe Right to [Left Arrow] and [Right Arrow], but whenever I enter lockpicking mode the arrow keys will not work, only [A] and [D].

- Books
I mapped Activate to the right-side button on my mouse, which shows up as [M4] (I am using a Logitech G3 mouse). Whenever I read a book, I cannot use that button to put it in the inventory, and [E] doesn't work either.

Hopefully this will help you guys.

Oh, and how do I hotkey a weapon to the number keys like in Oblivion and Fallout?
Haven't tested it myself, but apparently you put something in your Favorites with [F], then open it up while out of the menus with [Q]. Then while hovering over an item, press one of the number keys to bind it to a hotkey.

No thanks. I hate having to keep moving my mouse back and forth every time something needs a confirmation. Though I'd personally prefer Enter for confirmation, the Use key makes some sense.

Instead, let us press Use to exit containers. You Use a container, see nothing you like, press Use again to close it. Much more intuitive than pressing Tab.
I've gotten used to that in Oblivion, honestly. Tab to enter the top-level menu, and tab to back out of them. A container is just a modification of the inventory menu.

Oh, and how do I hotkey a weapon to the number keys like in Oblivion and Fallout?
IIRC, you favorite it, then open your favorites menu, highlight the object, and press the number key you want.

I came onto this forum to search for a fix/report the keybinding bugs, and saw a lot of threads of course...and this one with dev responses!

So, I'll post my findings here.

I always remap "WASD" to "ESDF", for two reasons: it's the home row (i'm a touch typist,) and it allows me to utilize buttons the left of my hand as well as my right. Going off of memory (it's late for me,) I also had activate set to A, auto-run set to Q, sneak to Z, shout to G, sprint to Shift, always run to Caps-Lock, run to Ctrl... I think that's it. I pretty much re-map all of my games to similar buttons, but when I did so in Skyrim I found that I could read books, but not pick them up (E did nothing, and neither did my new activate key, A) and I could not set favorites. Going back to the defaults of course makes things work, but I have such muscle memory for ESDF and my other re-maps that the default contols pretty much make this game impossible, or at the very least, very unfun to play.

Is the before-mentioned patch going to fix things like this? I don't necessarily mind if the visual prompts don't update, but as it stands now my enthusiasm to play this just went from 1000% to much, much less :(

Hoping for a fix soon!

There is another thread re dropping of items.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1257222-how-do-i-drop-an-item/page__gopid__19160785#entry19160785

After deleting the contolmap txt file I was able to drop but after re-mapping my keys again I was not able to drop again.

Several commands are invisibly bound or not bound to the listed controls in the control menu.

The drop command is one of them, it's linked to the equip weapon key. But the hint says the default no matter what.

For lockpicking, they say the key is bout for the same as motion left (A) by default, but it's bound to A even if you change the motion key bindings.

The interface is a mess.

At one point Bethesda could get things like this right.

This is not the invention of HDR or magic NPC AI, this is keybindings, this is the equivalent of tying your shoes in game design world.

I'm the third person I've seen post about this so far. After getting the Destruction Dual Casting perk it became impossible to rebind spells to the right hand. You can still equip weapons, but upon removing anything from your right hand that same spell (the one in the right hand when you choose the perk) is back. For me it is the Flame spell. Changing favorites, restarting, and choosing different spells has no effect. If you attempt to click on the flame spell (with any button) it puts it in both hands. You can still freely move your left hand, but the right will not change.

Previous Thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1257110-keybinding-issues/

Continuing the discussion:

I too bind the Right button to "Move forward" and I also use the middle button to "Activate" but it still says use "E" to activate on certain things
I have the same problem with similar key binds.

I remapped the following keys:
right mouse button to move forward
"V" remapped for left hand
Left mouse button for right hand

If all else fails, I might have to config Autohotkey for this game.

I also use the right mouse button to move forward, and so I have the same issue as everyone else with favourites and dual-wielding. And I have bad news for us RMB-movers: AutoHotKey won't really help. I tried it, but somehow the underlying connection with the original function (i.e., left hand) remains and the result is that every time you try to move forward, you perform a left-hand power-attack and then you start to move forward - not great for a stealth-based character!!

So, like everyone else, I think Bethesda needs to fix this immediately, along with the mouse-control issues. Of all the basic things to get right in a console-port, you'd think they'd just address this stuff properly and avoid all this grief.
