Keybinding Issues

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 6:46 am

I also join the quest for numpad mappings. Both me and a friend of mine use this setup ever since daggerfall, and its pretty damn annoying when they are forcing me to play the way I don't want to. Its just way more convinient. I tried looking around for some .cfg files or in the .ini files on my friends setup but to no avail.

Same dirty trick that was played with Witcher 2, Had to wait ages before I could actually play it due to a useless and restrictive key-binding situation. PC users are being shafted, I'm sure the cash I used to pay for Skyrim fell straight into the company's pockets without issue, I am sure they didn't have to carry out endless unwieldly manipulations on it before they could use my cash in a way that their bank would accept, however, they consider it is entirely palatable to deliver me a game that is nigh-on unplayable (yes I'm left handed and want to remap the keys to ones of my choosing) I refuse to use a controller, I want to use keyboard and mouse as I always have on other games - HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE PATCH TO FIX THIS?

Like many, I registered purposefully for this.....
and like many veterans, I am a 20+ yrs gamer right-handed and have used arrow keys + mouse for ingame movement - Skyrim is my first ever Bethesda Purchase and I couldn't believe the lack of keybinding customzation. I haven't played an RPG in ages and decided to *go back* as it were, but had no idea going back also meant a game in 2011 that has so many issues right out of the box that games circa 1992 didn't even encounter! Sounds (Loudness Equalization helped some but still incredibly low) and trying to hook up a regular headset with an amplifier kicks me out of the game - RPG is about immersion and if the sounds are so low you're trying to hear things, this isn't immersion.... key binds - F does nothing to change my POV - stuck in first person....right and left arrows for strafing? REALLY!?? If want to strafe I would use the usual Q & E which I had to change but this should have been default. Not able to turn using right and left arrow keys - if anyone knows how to fix this please let me know. I've spent all the time tryin to get the game to work to play it that I haven't even left the starting area yet. I am beyond irate - I'm incredulous. If this isn't remedied within the week I am going to demand a refund. And while I am at it, I also expected better humanoid graphics in a PC game in 2011. I'm just overall so unimpressed.

To rebind Interface keys, you need to extract controlmap.txt from Skyrim - Interface.bsa, along with the other txt files so you can get the correct key codes. Study the files. Not sure if this messes anything up, but ive tested rebinding the Item Zoom 'C' key to the Shout 'Z' key, worked fine.

For now use FOMM for New Vegas to open up Skyrims BSA files in its BSA Browser.

I'm SO tiered of consolgames also "made" for PC gamers.
Dumb as I'am, I always preorder an intersting game for the release date.
Just to find out that PC gamers...somehow wasen't even WANTED in the first place...
To use it with basic PC equipment (mouse/keyboard) the game in question first need a couple of patches...
(Will I NEVER learn NOT do support sloppy designers, that want/promises it ALL...to "everyone"... :P )
(whooops we forgot that someone might want to remap the key's to work on the whole keyboard...maybe even on the numeric one... :P)

Atm my toon is standing by the executioner's block unabel to move, as my only options is to eather use an 360 controller or the WASD.
Call me conservative or an idiot but the WASD have never EVER been my own gaming method. I both left handed AND like it neat and clean...

And the numpad works for me(and have done so...for 15+ years or so) in/if not in atleast a couple of hundred games...
8=forward, 5=backward, 4=strafe left, 6=strafe right, with "enter" as action...
I might be sligtly slover by a fraction to get back to so called "hotkeys", inventory, journal, map etc...BUT THAT suits me just fine!

But in Skyrim, it seems like sertain keys like ALL the numeric keys as in 8546 on the numpad is prelocked for "something" and unawilbile to map.

Call me whatever you want and yes I even got so far that I even tryed it with an 360 contoller and I just couldn't bare with the sloppy handeling.
If I want to look around or loot a chest/boody, I wish do it in an rather smoth movement (as with a mouse).
And this is something the controller don't give me. A 360 controller IS to damn slow to react and it's at best jerky...atleast for me...

Bethesda PLEASE fix this...NOW rather an sooner!!!

Adding myself to the 40% here (oh, I'm so clever, I know.. and I even used a random number).
So, I've been gaming for as long as I can remember - my father (who is right-handed!!) taught me through observation to use numpad 'cause that made playing games like System Shock 2 and such a little more playable (not that it was a bad game - it and its predecessor were both just very difficult, for anyone who remembers) and it, in turn, made it easier on me - a lefty.

Now, my question is why is it that we can remap our keys to whatever we want in Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas (never played the older games of either them - so I wouldn't know, but prolly the same deal), but not in Skyrim, your newest release? What is up with this sudden change? I mean, just because it's 2011 and every other gaming company is screwing over their PC fanbase doesn't mean you have to, too, Bethesda. They're all jumping off bridges - don't you go doing the same! :/
My boyfriend happily got to play Skyrim (we share) because it's already set to WASD. I had to be severely disappointed by the lack of multiple binding sets AND the inability to set my keys to numpad. What baffles me is that in previous titles you allowed it, but suddenly - it's a problem. Why are they "reserved"? No keys should EVER be "reserved". Players should have the choice to set up their damn keys however they want and if they want the numpad "reserved" for whatever the hell it is, then let THEM do it, but don't force me and other players to. >:I

Honestly, if this doesn't get fixed, I would LOVE to refund this game, but my boyfriend is very happy with it, so I won't only because he's thoroughly enjoying it. It upsets me greatly that I can't play such a pretty and probably awesome game, though.
I hope you listen to us, Bethesda, and fix this 'cause if anyone needs to fix this, it's YOU. I will hold off on playing this game and using alternative methods that I've read about in this thread only because I sure as hell don't believe this game deserves to be played until issues like this are resolved by the ones who caused it. I'll give it a couple of weeks. Hope you are reading this thread and going "D'oh!" - facepalm and everything. :I

Damn, I was going to buy this tonight, but I'm a lefty and I always use the number pad. This seems to be happening more and more lately with new games... same problem with Rage, had to write a custom config file to make it work. I think I'll hold off on purchasing until I see that there is a straight-forward fix for this.

I think they know about this and it's going to be fixed. There was a developer around here in another thread that was discussing a similar issue with another user. I didn't read much of it though.
Could you please provide a link to the thread containing the dev's comments?

In every elder scrolls game, i rebind the use key to Middle mouse. However when I do this in Skyrim I can interact and use things fine, until it comes to picking up a book or items in a chest. Once i do this, i cannot pickup any item, because the GUI says press E to pickup. However neither key works. I have to rebind the key to E to be able to pickup anything. As well as this when i rebind the F and R keys, the poorly designed inventory screen shows those keys flipped. Or at least not showing the change in key bindings. This is a very poor move. When will this be addressed as I will not play until this is fixed. If it is not fixed then i will not recommend anybody to purchase this disappointment of a game.

Also, a comparison of the weapon i am carrying and the one i want to pickup would be nice.

P.S I know that Oblivion had a bad inventory screen, i didn't realise there was a competition to see if you could make it worse. Congratulations on succeeding.

Same problem here, been rebinding the use key to M3, and it's impossible to pick a book or a letter.

Another numpad user here.

Nothing more frustrating, when you've been really looking forward to a game only to find you can't enjoy it due to such a stupid oversight.

Same issue here, + the fact that changing some keybindings doesn't really work, (Setting activate to MB5 for example still has the game ask me to press E to loot a book i'm reading , neither MB5 nor E actually loots it).

Perhaps it is time for bethesda to lower the price of their PC ports to $0.99 to reflect the amount of additional effort they spend on the porting. (If this isn't patched within a week i will request a refund, this is unplayable for me at the moment).
(I was stupid enough to pre-purchase on steam)

As a fellow lefty I'll just kinda re-post what I said in the other thread. It's a nightmare navigating the UI currently. I'm using I,J,K,L for movement and all these locked navigation keys are driving me bonkers. I have to take my hand off the mouse every 20 secs to mess around with my inventory or spells.

I don't use the numpad much but it would be nice to have it as an option. The game is gorgeous and wonderfully realized but I guess we can't have our cake and eat it too. :(

Yet another left handed player that feels left out in the cold (no pun intended)

I can't stand the WASD control scheme and remap the controls to the numpad in every game I play - except apparently Skyrim.

This really reflects badly on your design team, fix it please.

ok, title says it all.

Can you simply rebind the controls like you could in Oblivion and the fallouts??

I use right mouse to move forward for instance (back from quake 1 days).

Am I missing something? This isnt exactly asking for much...

Most of what I came here to say has already been said, as a left-handed player not being able to rebind everything makes the game unplayable. In addition to the num pad keys has anyone found a way to rebind tab yet? Having to reach across the whole keyboard to close out of every menu is incredibly tedious.
